Greetings / Kwey Kakina,
Two items in this email:
1) Invite to participate in the planning for May Day (May 1st) activities
2) Jane's Walk Ottawa resuming after 2-year hiatus, for May 7-8 weekend
please circulate these infos as desired
----
1) *Ottawa/Eastern Ontario May Day Planning*
Wednesday, March 23 at 6:00 p.m.
RSVP:
https://actionnetwork.org/events/ottawaeastern-ontario-local-organizing-meeting
'We want your opinion on what May Day should look like and what we should
do next. Ottawa has a unique opportunity to get creative and plan a May Day
event that moves our region from the impacts of the convoy to winning long
term improvements for all residents and workers, while celebrating our
community along the way. All welcome!'
*MAYDAY ORGANIZING - CONTEXT p1:*
This invite was circulated by Community Solidarity Ottawa, a coalition
group formed during the convoy occupation, though the RSVP website says
Ontario Federation of Labour.
It is relevant to know about the beginnings of the CSO initiative, part of
which were the two meetings described in the following article (*with
correction that the role of the union described in the article, is
overemphasized):
https://marxist.ca/article/deliberate-sabotage-of-ottawa-freedom-convoy-counter-demo-by-aristocracy-of-labour
Whether there are now better structures, processes, and transparency /
accountability for the organizing is unclear. One of the primary people
involved described it this way, on Feb 25:
*'CSO is still very much a grassroots coalition. We don't have a structure
or anyone "in charge". We'll likely be figuring out more of a structure in
the near future but at the moment its just folks getting together to plan
actions in the community.'*
*MAYDAY ORGANIZING - CONTEXT p2:*
Organizing For Justice hosted May Day events for two years, in 2010 and
2011.
To look back at them for possible inspiration, please see the following

*2) Jane's Walk Ottawa: May 7 & 8*
While there isn't any notice posted publicly yet,
"Jane's Walk Ottawa-Gatineau organizers are planning to revive Jane's Walk
Ottawa-Gatineau this May after our two-year hiatus. The dates for Jane's
Walk this spring are Saturday & Sunday, May 7 & 8."
More info is likely coming soon.
Jane's Walk is a series of volunteer-led community walks in Ottawa and in
other cities around the world, usually the first weekend in May, named in
honour of urbanist Jane Jacobs.
