*Fires in the Amazon - Ottawa Action at Brazil Embassy*
Thursday September 5th, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
at Brazil Embassy in Ottawa, 450 Wilbrod St.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1160137190848578/
This action for the Amazon in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in Brazil,
is in response to the call from APIB (Indigenous Peoples Articulation of
Brazil) with Amazon Watch and Extinction Rebellion, for actions on
September 5, Amazon Day in Brazil: www.tinyurl.com/sept5amazonia
The idea for this action is not to have any specific organization host, but
instead it be a community event in front of the Brazilian Embassy in
Ottawa: https://facebook.com/events/1160137190848578/
** Please read the lengthy details below, and contact us with any input **
*(( Also note the print resources at bottom, even for those not attending
))*
Note there is also an action at noon at DFAIT (Canadian Foreign Affairs)
125 Sussex Dr in Ottawa https://facebook.com/events/904971299881191/
---
On Thursday September 5th between 4:00pm and 6:00pm, especially between
4:30-5:30, all concerned about the Amazon Rainforest fires are invited to
attend, for as short or long as you are able.
Come on your way home from work, or after school lets out, or with whatever
else you are doing. Bring friends, family, colleagues with you.
The plan is for at least three specific things:
1) Speakers and songs
2) Informal discussions about what local organizing is or could be doing
3) Distribution of information flyers, and messages on signs and placards
4) ... more?
SPECIFIC NEEDS :
If you can help with any of the following, please send a message, or email
to org4justice at gmail.com
* Bring a megaphone
* Print quantities of flyers or pamphlets
* Bring materials for sign-making and to post them on poles
* Documentation and reporting (video/audio/writing)

ACTIVITIES :
1) Speaking and singing
Hopefully we can have a megaphone. It seems appropriate to prioritize the
following voices (not necessarily in this order): Indigenous peoples of the
Amazon and S. America; People from Brazil or who are working on issues in
Brazil/ the Amazon; Local Indigenous peoples, of this region and of Turtle
Island; and, People working on issues of climate and deforestation - and
especially those people whose voices are traditionally marginalized.
This can be self-organized at the event including how long each person or
group has (keep it concise!); you can also message, email, or comment on
the Facebook event wall in advance. Hopefully speeches and songs will be
for less than half the event, to allow for the other two activities.
2) Informal discussions about local organizing possibilities
What are people already doing in this region, and in coordination with
other places, about this issue and related issues? What could we be doing?
What's needed? How to get involved?
Creating the space for individual and small-group conversations at this
event will further connections in these regards - having this happen, to
facilitate this for everyone in attendance, is a primary purpose in order
to extend the event's impact.
Note there are two 'welcome' meetings directly after this event, for two
local organizations working on climate issues:
* Our Time has a new member training 6:00pm, at 4 Florence St suite 210
* Extinction Rebellion Ottawa has their monthly potluck and welcoming
meeting 7:00pm, at Kind Space, 222 Somerset St W.
3) Distributing information and raising awareness
Hopefully we can have a lot of flyers and pamphlets to hand out to people,
and signs / placards to catch attention. The Brazilian embassy isn't in a
busy location, so maybe small groups of people can go to the intersections
at Charlotte or Laurier - or into Strathcona Park or even to Rideau St - to
hand out literature. Maybe also signs can be posted or held at the nearby
intersections to alert people to the protest and location.
There are a number of materials that are suitable to print:
(reminder: please message or email if you can print in quantities)
* Amazon Watch toolkit : 6x 1-pagers
https://tinyurl.com/aw-toolkit
* "We, the Peoples of the Amazon" : 1/2-page double-sided
https://tinyurl.com/amazon-ppls
* Solidarity with People in Brazil : 4-page or 11x17 double-sided
(with blank space on back page for adding customized info)
