As we near the one year anniversary of the Québec Mosque shooting - the
largest political mass shooting in almost 25 years in Canada - we grieve,
reflect, and reckon. We grieve the deaths of of Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou
Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Abdelkrim Hassane and
Azzedine Soufiane alongside their families and communities. We reflect on
how their murders laid bare the festering Islamophobia that this country
harbors and fosters and the collusion of imperialism, colonialism, and
capitalism that delegitimizes specific bodies and turns them into spectres
to be feared, controlled, reduced. We reckon with our collective
complacency with Canada’s legal and state mechanisms which routinely enact
violence on Muslims here and abroad. We grieve, reflect, reckon… and then,
together, we rage and rise.
