*Day Care Kids on Strike: Opposing Bill 143, the Modernizing Child Care Act*

I worked as an Early Childhood Educator in day care centres for 12 years
until I had my own child and decided to open a home day care.  I have
gotten a new perspective on child care workers and what children need.  I
am disgusted and appalled at the provincial governements proposed Bill 143;
Modernizing Child Care Act.  After being announced last December , it has
already passed the second reading.  This legislation will have devastating
effects on child development and families will face less access to child
care.

I am in the process of networking and finding other caregivers that will
oppose this legislation in a child friendly way.  Over the next few months,
I will be occupying local MPP Yasir Naqvi's office and advertising
political 'circle times' (puppet shows, felt stories, songs) that will
address Bill 143 and explain the impacts.

On May 1st, I am planning an afternoon 'strike'.  Parents will pick up
their children from day care at noon, then participate in an occupation at
City Hall.  Caregivers will set up informational booths to highlight the
service they provide and how these changes will affect them.
