Official Invitation (share and forward)

On Thursday May 13th, the Pro-Choice Coalition of Ottawa would like to
invite you to the pro-choice presence during the annual anti-choice “march
for life”. This year’s anti-choice “march for life” theme is “abortion, a
crime against humanity”.

Equitable access to legal abortion has been deemed fundamental to women’s
right to life, liberty, conscience, and bodily integrity. We will not allow
women's rights to be eroded. While energy is still required for us to keep
and gain better access to abortion, the issue of choice is a wider one.

We are parents, lovers and queers (on oh so many levels). We show up because
this is an issue of love, self-determination and bodily integrity. We show
up because we currently have a government that has abolished all funding for
the Court Challenges Program, which played a crucial role in allowing gay
and lesbians, women and immigrant Canadians to defend their constitutional
rights. We show up because this government doesn’t understand the
correlation between mother earth’s well-being and ours. We show up because
women living in rural or conservative areas still don’t have access to safe
abortions. We show up because violence is still killing members of our
communities. We show up because patriarchal structures are still very
dominant and harmful. We show up because accurate, comprehensive, inclusive
sexual health education is under funded and under attack. We show up because
we are quite able to choose if, with whom and when we engage in sexual play.
We show up because these issues demand more attention, more discussion and
more reflection.

While we truly support all emotions, we encourage a peaceful and loving
presence.

12:00 meetup at the Terry fox statue at the corner of Metcalfe & Wellington
(for witnessing the Parliament Hill anti-choice rallies)
1:30 at the Human Rights monument for the actual march (the march begins at
1h30)
After march: DEBREIFING and support (location to be determined)

Support volunteers from Canadians for Choice will be in attendance to offer
individual support.

If you are unable to attend the pro-choice presence, please take the time to
talk about the vast issues of bodily integrity. Bring it up. Send a letter
to your MP asking why women are still being harassed when accessing a funded
procedure, why gender identity and gender expression is not a part of the
Canadian Human Rights Act. Respond to an anti-choice bill. Email the
committee that is considering anti-choice bills, laws and strategies.

Consider joining PCCO's facebook group at :

JAVIER de LEON: Javier is a Mayan Mam community leader from the village of
Maquivil, municipality of San Miguel Ixtahuacan, department of San Marcos.
>From his small home, he looks across at Goldcorp's ever expanding open-pit,
cyanide-leaching gold mine - the "Marlin" mine. Since 2004, Javier has been
educating and organizing Mayan Mam communities and working to resist and
demand justice for the health and environmental harms and human rights
violations caused by Goldcorp's mine.

CARLOS AMADOR: Carlos is a teacher and community leader in El Porvenir, 15
kilometres from Goldcorp's open-pit, cyanide-leaching gold mine - the "San

for the health and environmental harms and human rights violations caused by
Goldcorp's mine.

KAREN SPRING: Karen is from Ontario, Canada. With Rights Action since early

RESISTANCE TO HARMFUL MINING:

Since 2000, Rights Action has been supporting and involved with struggles
related to Goldcorp Inc's open-pit, cyanide-bonding mines in Honduras and
Guatemala, and related to HudBay Mineral's nickel mine (formerly owned by
INCO and then Skye Resources) in Guatemala. (At <
http://www.rightsaction.org/>, there is extensive information about health
and environmental harms and human rights violations linked to these mines
and companies.)

The speakers will give first hand testimony, and show photos and documentary
films, of the environmental and health harms and human rights violations
caused directly and indirectly by Goldcorp's mines in Guatemala and
Honduras. With Karen as a co-speaker, they will focus critical attention on
Canadian government, corporate and investor policies, as build up to
Goldcorp's annual shareholder meeting in Toronto, on May 19th.

We will also accept donations at this event and contribute the funds towards
the over-all costs of having the speakers from Honduras and Guatemala to

*Connect the dots: Why you should care about the G8/G20*

Friday, May 14, 2010
7:00pm - 10:00pm
Le Patro Community Centre
40 Cobourg st. Hall # 1

No One Is Illegal Ottawa presents a community dinner & discussion on the
upcoming G8/G20 meetings in Toronto!

Our speakers - people active in their communities, organizing for social
justice and mobilizing for the G8/G20 meetings - will talk about how the
G8/G20 affects poor, immigrant, indigenous, and working communities across
Canada, and in Ottawa. We'll be serving a free dinner to bring people in
Ottawa together, in order to gather ideas and strategies on how to raise
awareness of the impacts of global economic policies on our communities and
how we can empower ourselves and strengthen our ties as a larger community.

The featured panelists are:
Syed Hussan
Mélanie Stafford
Shawn Brant
Mostafa henaway

Syed Hussan is an organizer for migrant justice and in defence of Indigenous
Sovereignty. He lives, works, and writes in Toronto and dreams of a world
where all people can live with justice and dignity. He thinks that people of
color, indigenous people. women, queer and disAbled communities should take
to the streets against the G8/G20 and come to Toronto.

Mélanie Stafford is a poet, lover and a fighter. She is an agitator,
facilitator and educator in matters of sexual health. This is a wide issue,
and she’s found that writing, singing and listening are powerful forms of
activism. She mostly learns from young people, and actively engages against
the colonialist and oppressive disturbances in our everyday interactions.
Mélanie believes that everyone has something to share, learn and unlearn.
She chooses her bike route by the firewood or lilac smells and sees
instructions on how to live from the heart all around her.

Shawn Brant is a citizen of the Mohawk Nation living in the community of
Tyendinaga. In 1998, he joined forces with the Ontario Coalition Against
Poverty (OCAP), mobilizing urban First Nations people into what he calls “a
fighting force.”

Mostafa Henaway is a Montreal-based community organizer with the Immigrant
Workers Centre and a member of Tadamon!, a collective actively engaged in
the international movement of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against
Israeli apartheid.

The Decho First Nations have been involved in formal negotiations with the
governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories for over thirty years.

We, the Dehcho Dene have been struggling since 1969 for rightful recognition
of our rights in a just and fair manner. When an Agreement with the
territorial and federal governments is reached, we will have the governing
authority and the resources to protect our lands and ensure that we can
continue to live according to Dene values and principles in all aspects of
our lives.

“Dehcho Ndehe Gha Nadaotsethe: Fighting for our Land,” is a project of the
Dehcho First Nations (DFN) Communiciations team. It brings together in one
film key moments of Dehcho history, and explains our struggle to retain
control of our homeland.

This film is an invaluable educational and mobilization tool to inform and
involve all members of our communities in the process of reaching an
agreement that allows future generations to continue to live in a way that
honours and respects the land of our ancestors.

the Reserve, and causing a considerable tie-up of motor traffic, the Indians
drew public attention to their grievance that they were prohibited by

film shows the confrontation with police, and ensuing action.”

What: *Protest because the Special Diet Allowance was cut*

When: Thursday May 20th, 1pm

Where: meet at the corner of Montreal road and Begin st. (in Vanier)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

In this year's provincial budget the Ontario Liberals cut the Special Diet
Allowance, while raising the welfare rates by LESS that the inflation rate.
This adds up to a 3% CUT in welfare spending in Ontario. This is only the
third time a government has cut welfare spending.

The special diet allowance was money accessible to some OW and ODSP
recipients who needed it for specific health related dietary needs,
allergies, etc. The maximum amount of money a person could receive from the
SDA was 250$. For people receiving SDA money, the cut represents as much as
30% less on their welfare cheques.

Although the Liberals have done nothing to reverse the rate cuts imposed by
the Conservatives, the SDA was one of the few options available for poor
people in Ontario who were tired of having to make the decision between
paying the rent and buying groceries.

In recent years a groundswell of activity led to a sharp increase in people
finding out about the SDA and signing up. This meant that the Ontario
Government was now spending an extra $194 million a year on welfare.Due to
the SDA's recent growth in cost and popularity, the government has decided
to cut it.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FIGHT BACK

Across the province anti-poverty organizations are gearing up to fight these
cuts. In Toronto, almost 1000 people gathered on April 15th to voice their
opposition to these cuts.

In Ottawa, Under Pressure, an anti-poverty and anti-capitalist organization,
is planning this protest in Vanier at MPP Madelaine Meilleur's office.
Meilleur is the Minister of Community Services, responsible for the loss of
the SDA.

we won't be quiet - we need the Special Diet

*FILM: Made in Secret: The Story of the East Van Porn Collective*
DATE: June 1st, 2010
TIME: 7pm
LOCATION: 256 Bank St, 2nd floor - EXILE Infoshop

As part of the sporadic (at best!) EXILE Infoshop series of film nights,
we are screening “Made in Secret: The Story of the East Van Porn
Collective” (2005) on Tuesday, June 1st.

DESCRIPTION:
It essentially began with a couple of people wanting to make a documentary
about an anarcha-feminist porn collective. Since they knew of no such
group, these folks eventually became the collective they set out to
document. What unfolds is a part-documentary, part-fictional account of
what it might look like for a group of people to collectively make
pornography by, for, and about one another according to feminist
principles.

The process developed by this group presents a real and radical challenge
to mainstream approaches to porn production, and even to other
self-described feminist porn producers! For example, the collective
process, at base, is egalitarian and democratic rather than hierarchical
or coercive. Roles within the porn collective rotate every few months to
balance power dynamics and workload responsibilities. Participants in the
project—whether appearing on screen or not—have an equal say in how the
film is used, and, true to consensus-based processes, no decision passes
unless everyone affected by the decision is comfortable with it. All of
these guidelines and more foreground the group’s porn-making, and thus
help maintain the trust that makes it possible for the group to continue
operating as it does.

Even though this film is not wholly based on a “real” project, I think
what it describes is very real in its possibilities. Imagining porn
projects that so defy industry norms in both content and production
process is a small step toward creating a world where people are treated
more fairly in all aspects of our lives, and where cultural production is
held to a much higher ethical standard.
