*Notes from Jan 31 Organizing For Justice meeting*

Attendance: Amanda, Greg, Rick, David

Agenda:
- feedback on Oct 09 conference
- who O4J is for, and what it can offer
- O4J Vision
- plans

****

*Further feedback on October 09 conference:*
http://organizingforjustice.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4

- probably a mistake to do French seperate date/location, didn't have enough
capacity to make it work
- people didn't have access to all workshops, had to make choices to attend
one and not another, maybe could do same workshops in more than one time
slot to ensure people have opportunity to attend
- could have a plenary at end to further the momentum of the event, make
plans for future?
- need to do a better job at distributing organizing work of conference, so
one person doesn't end up bottom-lining so much

*Discussion on 'who' Organizing For Justice serves, and what we do/can offer
*
http://organizingforjustice.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16

* people who are new to organizing/activism
>> perspectives on why to do activism
>> perspectives on how to do activism

* experienced activists/organizers
>> building networks
>> becoming/finding allies
>> how do we support, bring in other experienced people
>> chance to talk, overcome divisions

* unions/labour
>> getting plugged into networks, union
>> able to access/outreach to greater community

* workers
>> focus on rights (workers' rights, other rights): what they are, how to go
about securing rights

* tenants
>> ....

* other things we offer:
>> sustainable organizing, countering transitory nature of activism
>> providing ways to be involved
>> nurturing a collective memory
>> providing physical spaces to come together
>> going beyond education and outreach: continuing, involvement, welcoming

*
Organizing For Justice Vision*
http://organizingforjustice.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20

- more tangible projects/groups cultivated, and existing ones connected
>> able to provide assistance in developing the ongoing skills needed to
organize these projects

- Org4Jus is a sustainable/sustaining community project
>> perpetual (ongoing) organizing committee
>> community makes contributions in various ways
>> acquire some funding/resources? paid staff position(s)?

- local movements growing stronger year by year
>> more people engaged, efforts are more effective, more things being
accomplished/done
>> O4J providing networking, skills, discussion = act as hub?

****

*Organizing For Justice Plans*
http://organizingforjustice.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21

- still need to work on articulating mission and values
- decide to organize some sort of event/conference/forum on May Day weekend
(sat? sun?)
- will discuss more at next meeting
- before then, check with other groups that may be doing stuff around that
time (MayWorks festival; MayDay march; etc) to see that we don't conflict
schedules, see if we can work together
