Presented by Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement Ottawa

http://ottawa.indymedia.org

Guest Speaker: Miriam Fischer, Director

*About the Film*

On the 14th of June in the capital of Oaxaca in the state of Oaxaca the
protest camp of the teachers' union was evicted. They were striking for
better salaries and better social conditions for their pupils. This brutal
eviction led to a broad solidarity of the population of Oaxaca, which
organized themselves in the APPO (Peoples' Assmebly of the Peoples' of
Oaxaca). The APPO not only claims the demission of the responsible governor
Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, but made several concrete proposals for a new
constitution.

The documentary *Oaxaca- Between Rebellion and Utopia* shows the struggle of
the APPO and the daily life in the camps, and let people from different
sectors talk about their reasons to join the struggle, but also about their
hopes and plans for the time after Ulises. But it shows as well the brutal
repression that the social movements in Oaxaca are facing and that cost the
life of several people.

In light of the state oppression displayed at the G20 Convergence in
Toronto, this film is an inspiring presentation of a Latin American
community whose passion, dedication and action built a self-determined
community.

*About the Director*

Miriam Fischer is an independent filmmaker from Germany. She has made
several award-winning films and she shows a special sensitivity and
understanding of indigenous struggles, especially in South America and
Oaxaca. Her newest project focuses on the resistance of Aboriginal people
to Canadian colonialism and injustice, while exploring the themes of
sovereignty, resistance and freedom.

Between meetings with elders, healers, and activists for her current
project, Fischer has screened her films across central and eastern Canada.
We are honoured to have the opportunity to present her work in Ottawa.

*Shark pARTy!*
Thurs Aug 19, 9pm-1am
Mayfair Theatre,
1074 Bank St (near Sunnyside)

Save our Sharks! This misunderstood and mysterious animal needs our help.
Humans are pushing sharks to extinction and in the process endangering us
all. Sink your jaws into incredible facts about one of the planet’s most
mysterious and misunderstood creatures, then dive into the amazing
Sharkwater documentary.

Sharks have been around for over 450 million years but in our generation
populations are being destroyed at a shocking ...rate and are faced with
possible extinction. Join a Marine Biology student and marine enthusiasts to
learn about the dangers sharks face and how their dwindling populations
affect our planet, our oceans and ourselves. Discover how we -as people of
Ontario- can help stop the slaughter of sharks, improve our oceans and save
the planet. Watch the astonishing film Sharkwater detailing Rob Stewart's
dangerous journey in an effort to save sharks from extinction.

Throughout the evening you are invited to have drinks and snacks in the
beautiful old theater as you view and bid on unique works of art. The list
of artists includes a wide array of talent. All proceeds from ticket sales,
artwork, refreshments, and donations will go to helping to save the sharks
and the oceans!

All proceeds of this evening go to Shark Savers, a charity dedicated to
raising awareness, educating people of the world, and taking action. Their
mission is to save sharks, and we can help. For more information, go to;

http://www.sharksavers.org/

As a student of Marine Biology and Environmental Sciences I am fearful that
our generation is going to have the most detrimental and irreversible impact
on our planet. Through diving experience around the world, I have had the
opportunity to witness the impact we are having on our oceans, and I have
vowed to help turn this around. Originally and ignorantly fearing sharks,
diving with them has allowed me to appreciate this phenomenal creature, and
understand the importance they have on our lives. Join me in the effort to
save sharks!

organizing against Israeli apartheid. Robyn Maynard will speak about
migration and border issues and their intersection with queer liberation
movements the thi...rd panellist will speak on the fight against the

reiterate the political nature of pride parades and LGBT pride events. We
also take this opportunity to invite all supporters in Ottawa to march with
NOII and Queer fAction (who will be marching against Israeli Apartheid) in
this years Pride Parade, which will take place Sunday august 29th. We will
be marching in solidarity with queers actively involved in resisting all
form of oppression. Specifically we will be marching in protest against
Jason Kenney, minister of Censorship and Deportations. Kenney has a long
track record of anti-gay actions, as well as being one of the most racist
and xenophobic MP in recent history. To join the NOII and QF contingents

Jenny Peto is an organizer with the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid in

Monday August 23: *Support the Tamil Migrants! Say No to Racism!
*
*CANADA: STOP JAILING AND DEPORTING REFUGEES, LET THEM STAY!*
...In Ottawa. Monday August 23 @ Noon.
Gather at corner of Kent and Laurier
(Citizenship and Immigration Canada)

Join No One is Illegal to call for the immediate release of detained Tamil
asylum seekers, and an end to racist and restrictive refugee policies.
Justice, Freedom, and Status for All!

Surviving a journey, 500 Tamil refugees, including women and children,
arrived in BC after fleeing war and persecution in Sri Lanka. When the ship
first neared Equimault Harbour, in the territories of the Songhees First
Nation, it was immediately boarded by the Armed Forces, Border Services, and
RCMP. Families are now being separated, with many children being taken by
the Ministry of Child and Family Development. The refugees now face the
threat of incarceration and eventual deportation.

Canadian government officials and media outlets are perpetuating false and
dehumanizing stereotypes of ‘illegals’, ‘terrorists’, and so-called
queue-jumpers. The earlier arrival of 76 Tamil migrants on Ocean Lady was
similarly sensationalized. This deliberately created hysteria appeals to
prejudices of refugees as undesirable.

This fear-mongering is just another tactic used to disguise the racist
policies that define Canada’s immigration and refugee system. The Canadian
government was recently forced to apologize for its “keep Canada white”
measures, such as the Komagata Maru incident. Yet Minister of Censorship and
Deportation Jason Kenney continues to increase detentions and deportation of
refugees and undocumented migrants, while bringing in more temporary
exploitable migrant labour. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews recently
declared that Cabinet is drafting new policies to clamp down on migrants and
“make this country less welcoming for future shipments of human cargo.”

No One is Illegal-Ottawa asserts the basic human right to safety, mobility,
and protection. It is well known that Tamils in Sri Lanka are fleeing
military atrocities and mass displacement. The only crime the migrants have
committed is transgressing this imposed settler-colonial border. We
encourage you to join us in rejecting repressive, racist, and exclusionary
ideologies and policies, and instead encourage compassion, solidarity,
respect for life, and justice for all refugees. Release Detained
Asylum-Seekers! Let the Boat Stay! Status for All!

LET THEM STAY

NO ONE IS ILLEGAL

No One is Illegal (NOII) Ottawa is a coalition of migrants and allies that
advocates and fights for the rights, dignity, and respect of immigrants and
refugees, as well as those living without status in Canada. we are against
capitalism and we believe in abolishing borders. We call for Status For All.
We also stand in solidarity with the struggles of indigenous peoples for
land, self-determination and sovereignty

August 29th *NO ONE IS ILLEGAL in the Pride Parade*

March:
Sunday August 29th
12:30pm
meet at the National Archives (on wellington)

Join us as we say:
TEAR DOWN THE WALL
PRIDE IS FOR ALL
STATUS FOR ALL

we invite all supporters to march with No One Is Illegal for queer pride and
migrant justice

we will also be marching with Queers Against Israeli Apartheid, in support
of Palestinian queers and the demands of BDS

QUEERS AND MIGRANT JUSTICE ACTIVISTS VS JASON KENNEY
...
why do we oppose Jason Kenney?

minister Jason Kenney appointed Doug Cryer, a known anti-gay activist to the
Immigration and Refugee Board, making it harder for queer refugees to get
status

queer refugees are forced to "prove" their gayness in order to be granted
refugee status by a "board" of one person who gets to decide their fate. if
they do not fit the stereotypical idea of gay or lesbian, they are denied
refugee status and are ordered to be deported.

Kenney oversaw unprecedented immigration raids in workplaces and women
shelters in Ontario. Under the Conservatives, deportations have skyrocketed
with 75 people being deported from Canada every day.

his office has removed all references to LGBT rights from a newly revised
study guide for immigrants applying for Canadian citizenship.

He Has opposed same-sex marriage, saying queer people could get
married...but only to members of the opposite sex

Join No One Is Illegal – Ottawa. We are a group of migrants and allies,
fighting for migrant justice, indigenous sovereignty and status for all

*Call-Out for Take Back the Night
*

Every year, women in Ottawa come together to Take Back The Night, a
collective effort to assert safety for women in the streets of Ottawa and a
call to end violence against women.

This year more than ever, essential services offered to women across the
country are threatened by a conservative government who has, for years, been
attempting to erode sections of the women’s’ movement. This year’s theme
will then be Take Back The Night: Demand Our Rights.

Come March with us to Take Back the Night and Demand our Rights, Thursday,
Sept 23rd, 2010

Three ways to participate:

1) Call for Speakers
2) Call for Volunteers
3) Call for Participants

1) Call-out for speakers

To address this theme in a diversity of ways, we are inviting women to
express their interest in speaking at this year’s Take Back the Night rally
and to elaborate, in their own words, on the chosen theme.

To make a submission to this speaker callout, please send an email to
callouttbtn at gmail.com before August 31th, 2010 with the following:

·Your name
·Your contact information
·The organisation you represent (if applicable)
·A brief outline of the theme you would like to discuss at the rally (max 5
minutes)

In an effort to support a diversity of women to speak, we encourage women
who have never taken a speaking role at our events to come forward. Please
indicate in your submission if you have spoken at a Women's Event Network
event (TBTN, IWD, December 6th) before. Priority will be given to women who
have not spoken before. Subsidies will be made available if needed.

2) Volunteers Needed for TAKE BACK the NIGHT 2010

In order for this event to be a success, we need the help of Volunteers!
Support will be needed for assisting in setting up the Rally, Marshalling

More information about the herstory of Take Back the Night is below.

Herstory of Take Back

The Night Take Back The Night, a march to protest violence against women,
began in Europe in the early 1970's. The United States began organizing
their march in 1977 and a year later, three Canadian cities, Ottawa,
Vancouver, and Halifax, held their first "Reclaim the Night" marches in
which women took to the streets to reclaim their right to walk alone at
night without fear of violence.

The Political Action Collective of the Ottawa Women's Centre organized the
first "Take Back The Night" march in Ottawa. They did not advertise or
officially take credit for the march. About 80 women marched simultaneously
down Rideau Street and Bank Street before meeting up at Confederation
Square. No permit was obtained, but the sheer force of these determined and
brave women forced the police to provide an escort. A party followed in
which everyone had a good time - celebrating the courage and spirit of women
in the first year of this 33-year battle against violence against women.

Each year we still meet to hold a rally at a specific location, attend and
info fair where we make available resources for women from the community,
network and share our experiences. Of course, central to the whole night,
is the march! Women marching together in solidarity - voicing our message
to demand safety on our streets, in our communities, our workplaces, and in
our homes. Women should be able to live free from fear of violence! We're
taking back our streets! And the night!

This year in particular, we are marching to also demand our rights. Years of
cutbacks to essential services has led to the erosion of sections of the
womyn's movement and womyn's basic rights. We demand for these cutbacks to
end, the return of services we require and the provision of basic rights and
freedoms to womyn from all communities!
