In the aftermath of the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his
killer, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi used the hashtag
#BlackLivesMatter to express their outrage over state-sanctioned violence
towards black people and black communities. In the wake of continued police
brutality and the killing of black people by police, communities in Toronto
and in cities throughout the world have organized to increase police
accountability through various means and build movements in communities to
fight back against police violence. What can movements learn from each
other while recognizing the differences they face? How can strategies be
shared across organizations?
Join us for a panel discussion with co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter Alicia
Garza, Yusra Ali of Black Lives Matter Toronto and Kimalee Phillip, an
organizer with the Network for Elimination of Police to discuss concrete
ways to support and be in solidarity with black led movements confronting
police violence.
