Mon Oct 26 09:05:34 PDT 2015
Hey
This week's digest includes events from some of our partner organizations
at York and in the community. We will send out the event's digest every
Monday (except holidays). If there is any event related to a social or
environmental justice issue that you would like to see included in future
digests you can email me at naila.opirgyork at gmail.com. We try to
prioritise events happening at York and in the Jane-Finch community as much
as possible.
We are also currently in the process of revamping our volunteer program by
instituting a committee structure to implement outreach and programming
initiatives at OPIRG-York. If you're interested in volunteering at OPIRG
York, or have any questions, please get in touch with Naila at
naila.opirgyork at gmail.com. We always need volunteers! And stop by the OPIRG
York office anytime -- Room 449C Student Centre!

1) *Osgoode Society Against Institutional Injustice Presents: The Police
Access Request Initiative*
Have you ever been carded by police?
Are you interested in learning what kind of information the police have on
you?
If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions the Osgoode Society
Against Institutional Injustices (OSAII) invites you to the Police Access
Request Initiative.
OSAII has created this event to provide a simple way for members of the
public to obtain police data that has been gathered by carding or by any
other means. Participants will have the opportunity to file a Freedom of
Information (FOI) request with Osgoode law students who have been trained
in filing and submitting these request forms.
All records are kept confidential and not shared with any third parties.
The Toronto Police Service offers civilians a chance to apply directly for
their records, however some civilians may feel intimidated by the process
and that is why OSAII is offering this service to the public.
The following is a list of the most common types of requests processed
through the Toronto Police Services' Access and Privacy Section:
· Records of Arrest
· General Occurrences; Incident Reports
· Memorandum Book Notes
· Witness statements or contact information
· Police related 9-1-1 Emergency calls
LOCATION: Osgoode Hall Law School, Room 1003
DATE: Wednesday, October 21st, 2015
TIME: 1230 to 230 PM
*If you choose to have a request form filled at this event please bring a
piece of ID with you.
For more information on the event and how to make requests yourself you can
check out the OSAII website here: http://www.osaii.org/initiatives.html

workers' movements themselves?
How can labour scholarship promote the goals of economic and social justice?
How can or should movement activists mobilize academic knowledge and
research?
How can or should the academic community work with/for movement activists?
Are there barriers that act to prevent a fruitful relationship between
labour scholars and movement activists and how might they overcome?

Violence (NEPV).
Kali Akuno, a founder of Cooperation Jackson and a key member of the late
Chokwe Lumumba’s successful election campaign for the mayoralty of Jackson,
Mississippi, will discuss integrating strategies in the fight for racial
and economic justice, including popular assemblies and neighborhood defence
committees; alternative community development through solidarity economies;
and strategically selective engagement with electoral politics and taking
government office.
Jane Finch Action against Poverty, a grassroots, resident-led coalition of
community members, activists, and workers, is hosting the meeting. They,
along with The Network for the Elimination of Police Violence, will offer
presentations on their recent activities and plans for the future.

*7) RALLY TO STOP THE SOCIAL CLEANSING OF TORONTO'S HOMELESS!*
Tuesday, November 3
12:30PM
Toronto City Hall (Bay and Queen)
Food will be provided
City Council is going to vote on a plan to remove 634 shelter beds from
George St. in the downtown east so the area can be 'revitalized'. Most will
never return. This measure is only part of a plan to drive the homeless out
of the centre of the City and relocate them in the suburbs.
The shelters are already massively overcrowded and are operating in a state
of crisis. To close down facilities and try and move them to the fringes of
the City is a reckless act of social cleansing that will cause great
hardship and put lives at risk. How can people possibly survive in areas
that lack the services they need and without provision for transportation?
Come out to City Hall on November 3 and be part of the fight to prevent the
driving out of the homeless and fight for the basic right to shelter!

*8) ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD – Season opener with director Lia Tarachansky*
Tuesday November 3 6-8pm
Cinema Politica at The Bloor
506 Bloor St. West.
**Cinema Politica at The Bloor
<https://www.facebook.com/CinemaPoliticaBloor> is kicking off the fall 2015
season with the Toronto premiere of ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, a doc that
sheds light on Israel's biggest taboo by telling the story of those who
tried to silence a history and erase Palestine. Former West Bank settler
Lia Tarachansky looks at Israelis’ collective amnesia of the fateful events
of 1948 when the state of Israel was born and most of the Palestinians
became refugees.
Director Lia Tarachansky will join us for a Q&A.
Entry by suggested donation $5-20.**
This screening is co-presented with the Doing Jewish Off the Grid Planning
Committee, Independent Jewish Voices, and the United Jewish People's Order
