This week's digest includes events from some of our partner organizations
at York and in the community.  We are currently in the process of revamping
our volunteer program by instituting a committee structure to implement
outreach and programming initiatives at OPIRG-York.

On the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and
JFAAP’s 7th anniversary (Oct. 17th), JOIN US for Drums, Live Music,
Dancing, Placards... and so much more!

4:00 pm: Rally at South East corner of Jane & Finch
5:00 pm: March from the corner of Jane & Finch to the Driftwood Community
Centre (4401 Jane St.)
6:00 pm to 8pm: Dinner, performances & speeches on the occasion of
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty & JFAAP’s 7th Anniversary

2015 Federal election and our demands:

· Guaranteed minimum annual income so no one lives in poverty
· National Childcare programs to guarantee affordable childcare for all
· Housing for all: Ending homelessness & creating affordable Housing
· Status for All: No One is Illegal
· Minimum wage increase
· Secure retirement & better pensions for seniors
· End austerity measures & cuts to social services & community programs
· Affordable healthy food for all
· Stop tar sands pipelines and other environmental destructions caused by
governments and corporations

2) Toronto Queer Zine Fair 2015

The Toronto Queer Zine Fair seeks to make space for traditionally
marginalized voices in the zine community. While accepting applications
from all self-identified queer/trans* folks, TQZF chooses to prioritize the
voices of trans women, trans women of colour, queer people of colour,
indigenous/two-spirited folks, and non-binary folks. Toronto Queer Zine
Fair is an alternative zine fair focusing on the radical and political
history/philosophy of zines and giving a platform to those often
under-represented in zine culture.

When:  Saturday October 17, 2015 11AM-7PM

Where:  Trinity -St Paul’s United Church, 472 Bloor St. W.

Cover:  Pay What You Can with a suggested donation of $5.  No one turned
away due to lack of funds.

3)York Federation of Students Presents:  XPRESSIONS AGAINST OPPRESSION

Xpressions Against Oppression (XAO) seeks to create those transformative
and revolutionary ideas through meaningful dialogue and organic discussion,
while taking into account our lived experiences. XAO is an annual weeks of
events that presents workshops, discussions, and performances of various
topics related to social justice and equity issues.

XAO aims to educate, engage, and empower students to take action of issues
that affect not only the general York community but the world as a whole.

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a queer disabled femme writer,
performance artist and educator of Burgher/Tamil Sri Lankan and Irish/Roma
ascent. Join us for a reading and workshop based on the release of her new
book.

In this discussion based workshop we will be engaging in conversations
about the importance of consent, negotiating consent in everyday situations
and discussing consent from an intersectional perspective. This workshop is
in partnership with SASSL

This panel strives to be a safer space for queer, disabled folks to have
conversations. The discussion will be around topics that include disability
and relationships and navigating consent.

This panel discussion, which aims to centre black students, will focus on
defining, naming and combatting anti-blackness. Through an intersectional
lens we will explore the increasing use of violent force on black bodies

*Friday October 23, 2015: 3PM – 5PM, CLH J*

Muslims in Canada have been facing an increasing level of Islamophobia.
Particularly affected are young Muslims growing up in a post 9/11 world,
women wearing niqab and hijab, and those of more visible displays of faith.
During this panel we’ll be discussing ways to create greater levels of
inclusion within Canada and moreover, within the York Community.
