5. Syria Film Festival
The inaugural Syria Film Festival takes place November 13-15 at the Art
Gallery of Ontario, with two preview screenings October 2 and 18.
The Festival is unique among similar events in uniting its artistic mission
with a social justice goal. As well as promoting vibrant new cinema about
Syria and by Syrians, our vision is to showcase the aspirations and convey
the struggles of Syrians.
Our mission is to build bridges, inspire conversation, and engage audiences
in thoughtful debates on social justice, human rights and global
citizenship. We seek to support young talent in film and art and enrich
Toronto's vibrant multicultural identity.
We invite you to come to our preview screenings and learn more about the
Syria Film Festival: our program of movies and documentaries, our
filmmakers and special guests, and the work we are doing in Toronto’s
artistic and activist communities.
Our October 2 fundraiser and official launch revolves around the struggle
for women’s rights and liberation in the Arab world. The event includes a
screening of a series of documentaries on the issue, as well as related
talks by Festival programming committee member Aisha Jamal, and Mark
Cameron, who has volunteered as a paramedic in the Syrian conflict.
The event takes place at BrightLane, 545 King Street West in Toronto, and
runs 6:30-8:30 p.m.
For our October 18 fundraiser, we will screen a film from the Festival’s
program itself, Our Terrible Country. This screening will take place at the
Centre for Social Innovation’s Whole Connector room at 215 Spadina Ave at 4:00
p.m.
