Hey
Here is the digest for this week. We will send out the event's digest
every Monday (except holidays). If there is any event related to a social
or environmental justice issue that you would like to see included in
future digests you can email me at naila.opirgyork at gmail.com. We try to
prioritize events happening at York and in the Jane-Finch community as much
as possible.
We are also currently in the process of revamping our volunteer program by
instituting a committee structure to implement outreach and programming
initiatives at OPIRG-York. If you're interested in volunteering at OPIRG
York, or have any questions, please get in touch with Naila at
naila.opirgyork at gmail.com. We always need volunteers! And stop by the OPIRG
York office anytime -- Room 449C Student Centre!

2) *Racism in Israel: The Bullet, The Ballot and The Boycott*
Tuesday, November 3 at 5:00
The Underground, York University
David Sheen is an independent journalist and filmmaker originally from
Toronto, Canada, who now lives in Dimona, Israel. He is also a York
alumnus.
His work includes blogging when he first moved to Israel in 1999; reporting
for the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz; producing a full-length
documentary on ecological architecture ("First Earth"), which was
translated into a dozen languages and published by PM Press in 2010; and
giving a TEDx talk on the film in Johannesburg, South Africa, later that
year.
In 2012, Sheen authored a report on racism in Israel for the United
Nations, and he is currently writing a book about the struggles of African
immigrants to Israel.
Since 2014, Sheen has lectured at dozens of college campuses and
communities throughout the United States and Canada, and in European
parliaments.
This presentation, which has been the focus of David Sheen's reporting for
the past five years, concerns the dehumanizing discourse towards
Palestinians, Africans and other non- Jews by top Israeli political and
religious leaders, and the vigilante attacks they inspire. It will include
some material Sheen presented at the Russel Tribunal on Palestine in
Brussels, as well as new information that has never been made public
anywhere in English.

*5) RALLY TO STOP THE SOCIAL CLEANSING OF TORONTO'S HOMELESS! – November 3,
2015*
Tuesday, November 3
12:30PM
Toronto City Hall (Bay and Queen)
Food will be provided
City Council is going to vote on a plan to remove 634 shelter beds from
George St. in the downtown east so the area can be 'revitalized'. Most will
never return. This measure is only part of a plan to drive the homeless out
of the centre of the City and relocate them in the suburbs.
The shelters are already massively overcrowded and are operating in a state
of crisis. To close down facilities and try and move them to the fringes of
the City is a reckless act of social cleansing that will cause great
hardship and put lives at risk. How can people possibly survive in areas
that lack the services they need and without provision for transportation?
Come out to City Hall on November 3 and be part of the fight to prevent the
driving out of the homeless and fight for the basic right to shelter!

*6) ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD – Season opener with director Lia Tarachansky*
Tuesday November 3 6-8pm

**Cinema Politica at The Bloor
<https://www.facebook.com/CinemaPoliticaBloor> is kicking off the fall 2015
season with the Toronto premiere of ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, a doc that
sheds light on Israel's biggest taboo by telling the story of those who
tried to silence a history and erase Palestine. Former West Bank settler
Lia Tarachansky looks at Israelis’ collective amnesia of the fateful events
of 1948 when the state of Israel was born and most of the Palestinians
became refugees.
Director Lia Tarachansky will join us for a Q&A.
Entry by suggested donation $5-20.**
This screening is co-presented with the Doing Jewish Off the Grid Planning
Committee, Independent Jewish Voices, and the United Jewish People's Order

*7) Rojava Solidarity Night*
Sunday November 8
7-9pm
Beit Zatoun – 612 Markham St.
There is a social revolution underway in Rojava, Syria, that presents a
living alternative within a region beset by despotic and sectarian politics
and exploitative imperialist interventions. Despite portrayals in the
commercial media, the people of the Middle East are not passive victims of
ISIS terror and State repression. In Rojava, they propose participatory
self- management of the economy, gender liberation and care for the natural
world as solutions to the region's current strife.
Rojava Solidarity Collective-Toronto invites you for an evening of
solidarity with Rojava and to celebrate the anniversary of the historic
resistance of the people of Kobane against ISIS. Join us to salute the
people's resistance in the Middle East. Rojava's alternative has shown that
another Middle East is possible – a Middle East built from below through
the solidarity of its peoples.
Along with exhibiting photographs from Rojava, short videos will be
screened, and guest speakers will be present to shed light on many aspects
of Rojava Revolution given the current refugee crisis and further
militarization of the region. Also, a member of Kobane Reconstruction Board
will be present to update us on the process of reconstructing the city and
the ways we can help in Toronto.
Music performance by: Shahyriyar Jamishdi, Dilan Ensemble.
This event is organized by Rojava Solidarity Collective-Toronto, and it is
endorsed by No One Is Illegal-Toronto, Centre for Social Justice, and
Students against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) at York University.
