OPIRG York, the Ontario Public Interest Group at York University, a student
based social justice, environmental education and action organization is
seeking a full time, permanent Volunteer and Programming Coordinator.

*Start Date: *As soon as possible, no later than September 28, 2015

*Deadline for Applications:* Monday August 31, 2015 by 5:00pm

*Salary: *$21.76 / hour (+ cost of living adjustments),30 hours / week &
comprehensive healthcare plan

*Hours of work: *30 hours / week, office hours 4 days a week, plus
occasional evening & weekend work.

*Terms of employment: *Staff are employed by a volunteer Board of Directors
and unionized under CUPE Local 1281, with a 6 month probationary period.

OPIRG welcomes the contributions that individuals from marginalized
communities bring to our organization, and invites aboriginal people,
people of colour, poor and working class people and those on social
assistance, women, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, queer-oriented people;
transgender, transsexual, intersex and two-spirit people; single parents,
members of ethnic minorities, immigrants, people from non-academic
backgrounds and people with disabilities to apply. We encourage applicants
to describe the contributions and experiences they would bring to the OPIRG
organization in their cover letter. All applicants are asked for a brief
statement on their views of power and oppression.

With the support of the Board of Directors and other staff, the Volunteer
and Programming Coordinator is responsible for:

-   Networking with community / campus groups, maintaining email
list-serves and managing OPIRG York’s social media

-   Recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers and coordinate
volunteer orientations & relevant trainings

-   Provide ongoing assistance to volunteers and OPIRG working groups and
assist in the production of outreach materials.

-   Develop OPIRG programming and coordinate events, including
Dis-Orientation Week, OPIRG’s annual alternative orientation week.

-   Attend weekly Board and staff meetings, provide monthly staff reports
to the Board of Directors and assist in policy development, policy
implementation and planning using consensus-based decision making

-   Assist the F/T Administration and Information Coordinator with
correspondence, office organization, grant proposals; maintenance and
development of Resource Centre.

*The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:*

-   Strong organizational and time management skills with an ability to
prioritize and manage multiple demands

-   Ability to be self-directed and work well independently and with
initiative in a loosely structured and dynamic work environment with
minimal supervision. Experience with consensus decision making a benefit

-   Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

-   Experience in volunteer coordination, project and event planning with
ability to coordinate both short and long-term projects. Experience related
to anti-racist, social and environmental justice and political action a
plus.

-   Familiarity working (paid or unpaid) within an anti-oppressive
framework using consensus decision making. Experience with meeting
facilitation and strategic planning a benefit

-   Previous experience in organizing with marginalized groups / communities

-   Awareness of activism and anti-oppressive politics surrounding a broad
range of issues, including (but not limited to): anti-racism, Indigenous
sovereignty and self-determination, sexism, environmental justice, student
and workers’rights, opposing corporate rule/government cutbacks, ableism,
migrant justice, globalization, classism, homophobia, transphobia and other
forms of oppression and discrimination

-   Experience creating promotional and public education materials

-   Experience in networking and community development with a diversity of
groups, familiarity with local community centres, activist organizations
and resources, especially with an anti-racist framework



*The following qualifications are beneficial, however not necessary:*

•   Experience with Ontario Public Interest Research Groups

•   Ability to research, design, and execute workshops for the purposes of
popular education & information sharing

•   Experience with website development and graphic design skills

•   Experience with social media
