*TODAY's Workshops*

*PoC Comics + Migrant Justice (Book Launch of Undocumented: The
Architecture of Migrant Detention)*
*TODAY: Thursday, September 24th*
· Facilitator: Facilitator: Tings Chak, Undocumented: The Architecture of
Migrant Detention
Co-Facilitators: Althea Balmes, Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love
· Time: 2-4pm
· Location: RM 313 Student Center
· Description of Event:
This workshop explores the role of comics in sharing stories of struggle
and resistance (using a medium where voices/images of/by people of colour
have been absent). We’ll look at specific comics and learn about
immigration changes and the lived experiences of live-in caregivers and
migrants in detention. Together, we’ll share our process, struggles, and
ideas for building our movements in more accessible, visually engaging, and
creative ways. This event will also be a launch event at York for the new
graphic novel by Tings Chak, Undocumented: The Architecture of Immigration
Detention, which comes one year after the historic hunger strike began in
Lindsay, Ontario’s Central East Correctional Centre. Undocumented will
later be hosted in OPIRG York’s Radical Reading Room. This event will
highlight the recent campaign work of No One Is Illegal – Toronto and the
End Immigration Detention Network.

Also don’t forget to check out Ad Astra Comix when you come! They will be
tabling during the event and have lots of cool comics for people to check
out! Ad Astra is a website, distributor and promoter of political comics.
Specializing in untold histories and marginalized perspectives, they
believe that comics are a unique and rewarding way to support and
participate in social change.

*TODAY: Thursday, September 24th*
· Facilitator: Richard Wellen, President of YUFA (York University Faculty
Association)
· Time: 6pm – 8pm
· Location: RM 313 Student Center
· Description of Event:
As public funding for post-secondary education has decreased, Universities
across Ontario have turned to increasing tuition fees, program cuts, and
an increase in private funding leading to the corporatization of our
campuses. This year York University announced it would begin its own
Program Prioritization Process, which would prioritize courses based on a
number of different indicators. In this workshop we will discuss how to
challenge these efforts in our fight for more affordable, accessible
education.
