*TODAY's Workshops*
*Hands On DIY Creative Activism*
*TODAY: Tuesday, September 23rd*
· Facilitator: various
· Time: 1-4pm
· Location: RM 313 Student Center
· Description of Event:
This workshop will provide participants with basic knowledge of
silk-screening, knitting, poster making, stencilling, and stop motion
animation basics, among many other do-it-yourself art techniques. This will
also be an opportunity to discuss and envision the ways art can influence
resistance on campus and in our communities.
During the event there will be an open discussion about anti-consumerism,
commercialism, and creative activism. Participants will also be able to
customize their clothing with other simple DIY techniques. They are
encouraged to bring their own clothing to alter. All materials and
supplies will provided, but feel free to bring your own. Bring any shirts
and fabrics that you would like to use for silk-screening.
Participants will learn how to make stencils and screenprint their
clothing. Screenprinting materials are both affordable and accessible, and
as such, they are often synonymous with underground subcultures. The
“screenprint aesthetic” has also become popular in mainstream media.
*Jane Finch Political Conversations Cafe*
*TODAY: Tuesday, September 23rd*
· Facilitator: Jane Finch Action Against Poverty
· Time: 5-8pm (performance 5-6pm, Discussion 6-8pm)
· Location: Black Creek Community Farms (4929 Jane St)
· Description of Event:
The Jane-Finch community stands in a socially disadvantaged space in
relation to much of the rest of Toronto. We have a high proportion of low
income residents and our unemployment rate is among the highest in the
city. Our marginalized position means that we have relatively little
influence over the political processes that affect us. But at the same time
this has lead to a strong base of politically inclined and strong community
organizing and activism. The Political Conversation Café brings interested
community residents together to explore and share analysis and political
thought, and develop collective ways that can be used to create progressive
positive social change. We are inviting York students to come and
participate and learn more about the community that York University is
situated in; as well as how to be an ally to community members who are
often negatively impacted by York’s gentrifying influences.
This Cafe will be a double feature in collaboration with OPIRG York for
their annual Dis-Orientation Week. The evening will kick off with a musical
performance by NoManzLand and then lead into a discussion on human rights
including how gentrification has a negative impact on the rights of those
living in marginalized communities such as Jane & Finch. Attendee’s will
discuss York’s complicity in this horrible process and discuss ways to hold
those responsible accountable. Purpose: To have a critical discussion about
the different human rights abuses that happen in Jane and Finch and how
community residents can organize to fight back.
Childcare and TTC tokens will be provided.
