around event logistics, media and promotions and documentation, followed by
an anti-oppression training from 2-5pm. Food will be available and any
other access needs please email:
*Anti-Oppression Training Details:*
Many of us are not aware that we live in a society that benefits certain
people at the cost of other people being denied these same benefits. In
this workshop, we will explore, define and unpack the terms Privilege and
Oppression and the different ways they affect us/and the society we live
in. We will also take a closer look at “Anti-Oppression” and the work that
it often includes – and excludes. Through collective strategizing and art,
we will examine and explore a more wholesome approach (one that includes
accountability, healing, creation and resistance) in the ways we navigate
our own personal journeys in grounding ourselves within these systems and
the different ways we can support each other.
*Please fill out a registration form so we know how many interested
volunteers to expect:*

trainings are both mandatory and must be completed before volunteering.

*10. Ontario Coalition Against Poverty Updates*
* October 2nd Should Parkdale Have a Community Legal Clinic?: A
CommunityForum*
Since 1971, Parkdale Community Legal Services(PCLS) has Provided legal
help to Parkdale residents and organized to defend the rights of poor
people in neighbourhood. But now there are plans to close the 17 community
legal clinics in the GTA and to replace them with 3 or 4 ‘mega-clinics.’
This threatens to remove our legal clinic from Parkdale. Join us at this
public meeting to learn about what’s happening to Toronto’s community
legal clinics and to make your voice heard! This event's speakers will
feature community members and organizers from Parkdale. Light refreshments
provided.

*Raise the Rates Week of Action October 13-17, 2014*
Liberal MPPs will be going back to Queen’s Park on October 20 but, during
the week before, they will be in their local communities and in their
constituency offices. Doubtless they will be feeling quite smug after
their election win and telling people about how committed to ‘fairness’
and ‘social justice’ they are.
Communities living in poverty know from bitter experience that the reality
they face is very different:
*The minimum wage has been set at a level that leaves people in poverty
*Those on Ontario Works (OW) and ODSP are living on incomes that leave them
unable to feed themselves and pay the rent
*The real value of social assistance payments has fallen by some 55% since
1994 and people have continued to get poorer during the years the Liberals
have been in office
*The vital Community Start Up benefit that kept people housed has been
taken away
*Many people on ODSP are now facing medical reviews that threaten to take
away their income
The Raise the Rates Campaign, a coalition of poor people fighting back
along with community and union allies, is not buying into Kathleen Wynne’s
‘social justice austerity’. We are demanding living wages, decent income,
the reversing of cutbacks and adequate and secure ODSP benefits.
>From October 13-17, we’ll be going to MPP’s and provincial offices
throughout Ontario with our demands. The Wynne Government is going to have
to understand that people in poverty are ready to fight back.

*11. Federal court leaves Deepan stateless, but he vows to fight on*
Dear supporters,
As you may have heard, a Tuesday decision rendered by the federal court
fails to recognize any responsibility of Canada towards Deepan despite his
life-long exclusive link to this country, and leaves him stateless.
Budlakoti and his lawyers are currently reviewing all options including an
appeal based on the apparent errors and omissions in the Federal Court’s
decision.
Wednesday media coverage included several articles including these two:

As you know, legal actions take time, but Deepan is determined to reclaim
the citizenship that was unjustly revoked by the federal government, and
the Justice for Deepan Committee will be there to support him. But we also
need your help.
Two things will help us keep pushing this fight forward on the political
and the legal front: more public support and more financial resources for
legal fees. Therefore, we humbly request the following things from you, our
dedicated supporters, who are committed to seeing justice done for Deepan:
1) *Donate* <http://www.justicefordeepan.org/what-you-can-do-2/donate/>.
Legal costs are an ongoing need. As many of you know, Deepan was denied
Legal Aid and we have outstanding legal fees that total nearly $30,000 and
this will only increase with subsequent legal actions. Please consider
signing up for monthly donations (this could last quite a while) or doing
one-time donations!
2) *Find endorsements*. We are currently collecting endorsements from
organizations and university professors. If you know of any that might be
interested in supporting, talk to them about the Justice for Deepan
campaign and put us in touch! See our website for organizations
<http://www.justicefordeepan.org/support-for-deepan/organizational-support/>
that have already endorsed and contact *justicefordeepan
<justicefordeepan at gmail.com>@ <justicefordeepan at gmail.com>gmail
<justicefordeepan at gmail.com>. <justicefordeepan at gmail.com>com
<justicefordeepan at gmail.com>* with leads and suggestions! This kind of
support goes a long way in building political leverage and long term active
supporters.
3) *Share this message*. Share this email to colleagues and family who
might be sympathetic or on the fence. Tweet about the case and share our
links through your networks. We need all the support we can get in our
usual but also unusual circles to get new people talking about it.
Thank you for your time and ongoing support. We may have a long road ahead
but with your help, we can take it together!
Onwards!
The Justice for Deepan Committee
