Many of us are not aware that we live in a society that benefits certain
people at the cost of other people being denied these same benefits. In
this workshop, we will explore, define and unpack the terms Privilege and
Oppression and the different ways they affect us/and the society we live
in. We will also take a closer look at “Anti-Oppression” and the work that
it often includes – and excludes. Through collective strategizing and art,
we will examine and explore a more wholesome approach (one that includes
accountability, healing, creation and resistance) in the ways we navigate
our own personal journeys in grounding ourselves within these systems and
the different ways we can support each other.

*6. **Israel & Palestine: What is the situation today? How do we defeat
Imperialism? [Fightback-YorkU Coffee Discussion]*
After 5 weeks of savage bombing by the Israeli imperialist war machine, a
ceasefire has been declared in Gaza. 2,100 Palestinians have been killed,
and according to the UN, 70% of whom are civilians. Hospitals, schools, and
tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed.
But this is a familiar story for those who have studied the situation in
Palestine. In fact it would be better to describe the current ceasefire as
being nothing more than a lull, in anticipation for the next war.
The Palestinians are no closer to liberation, ending the Israeli
occupation, bringing back the uprooted refugees, or ending their miserable
impoverishment.
Israel is not one step closer to "peace and security", as the right-wing
Netanyahu declared as the supposed aims for the brutal slaughter he
unleashed over the past months. Hamas has left the war strengthened. A
generation of Palestinian youth are justifiably seething with anger and
desire for vengeance, at the brutal destruction that has been brought down
on their families and communities.
We will be having political discussion this coming Thursday. Discussions
will be themed on Palestine (though not limited to it):
*Location*: Student Centre (Keele Campus)
Coffeeshop: "Treats" on the First Floor
*Date*: Thursday, September 11th
*Time*: 5-8pm
We want to answer the questions; How do we defeat Israeli and western
imperialism? What is the solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict? Can we
find a solution under capitalism, or is it necessary to find a
revolutionary socialist path forward?

*>>> Support for the book:*
*RAPHAEL SPERRY,** President of Architects/Planners/Designers for Social
Responsibility (ADPSR**-**USA): *“This slim book does not only contain more
detail of the architecture of detention centres than some scholarly works
on the architecture of incarceration, but it begins to outline the
invisible experience of hidden-away people in hidden-away places.'
*HARSHA WALIA, **Co-founder of No One Is Illegal and author of Undoing
Border Imperialism: *“Tings Chak has produced an essential resource for
migrant justice and prison abolition movements. The architecture of
incarceration - the maze of cameras, locks, guards, fluorescent lights,
crammed cells - shatters the government myth of migrant detention as a
“hotel.”By being attune to the simple details, this graphic novel
brilliantly subverts what is supposed to remain invisible and locked away."
*L**OIS AHRENS, **Founder and Director of Real Cost of Prisons Project: *"For
those of us working to end mass incarceration, Undocumented provides a
critical bridge to migrant justice organizing. Sites of surveillance, cages
and control, 'immigrant detention centers,' and 'correctional facilities'
are hidden in plain sight. They are two sides of the same coin."
*RICHARD SOMMER, **Dean of John H. Daniels School of Architecture,
Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto: *“Tapping a darker side of
Architecture’s enlightenment legacy, this remarkable graphic novel by Tings
Chak documents Canadian detention centers and sites for processing
individuals whose residency is in question, revealing often hidden
equations between architecture, political power and human rights.”

*8. **Global Day of Action: Solidarity with Cambodian Garment Workers!*
Join Workers United on September 17th as we stand in solidarity with
Cambodian garment workers in their fight for a higher minimum wage! Actions
are being organized by Workers United in multiple cities in Canada and the
U.S. Please keep checking this page for updates on actions happening in a
city near you!
*TORONTO, ONTARIO*
Lunch Time Rally starting at 12:00pm on September 17th in front of H&M (427
Queen Street West).
*Other cities posted*
*******Background********
In Cambodia, the women and men who sew clothes for The Gap, H&M, and other
major brands struggle to make ends meet. The legal minimum wage for garment
workers is a miserable $100 per month. Thousands of workers have fainted at
their sewing machines due to malnutrition, overwork, heat, poor
ventilation, and fumes from chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
Earlier this year, when over 200,000 Cambodian workers stood up to demand a
fairer wage, authorities shot four workers dead in the streets and threw 23
union activists in jail. Consumers don’t want clothes tainted with
exploitation and repression.
On September 17th, garment workers in Cambodia will demonstrate at their
workplaces for a raise to $177 per month – the minimum needed to cover
basic needs.
Please email info at workersunitedunion.ca if you would like your
union/organization to endorse this campaign!

*On September 17, 2013, *191 migrants jailed in a Lindsay maximum-security
prison went on hunger strike against their endless detention without trial
or charge. Over the last year, despite being locked in cages, their
resistance has continued. They have boycotted their detention reviews,
refused to go on lock down, and refused unjust prison orders. As a result,
strike leaders have been deported, faced coercion and fines while some have
been released. They continue.
On the outside, we have mobilized to support. We have beaten down the doors
of immigration enforcement headquarters, we have shown corruption in the
detention review process, and we have even won a case at the United Nations.
On September 17th, we gather to celebrate and to remember. We will come
together as families and friends of those jailed without an end in sight.
We will strengthen our struggle to overthrow prisons and border controls
that separate, detain and deport us. We will pledge our commitment to
fighting alongside Indigenous nations asserting sovereignty. We will insist
these walls must fall. AND WE WILL DANCE.

*10. Support for **Deepan Budlakoti*
We contact you today to request that your organization endorse and support
the Justice for Deepan campaign whose goal is to support Deepan Budlakoti's
struggle to reclaim his Canadian Citizenship.
In 2010, while Deepan was in jail, the Canadian government decided that he
was not a Canadian citizen despite being born in Canada. In December 2012,
after he had fulley served his sentence, they decided to further detain him
in immigration detention for several months while they attempted to deport
him to India where his parents were born. Yet, Deepan has lived in Canada
all his life, was issued a Canadian passport and has no other citizenship.
Deepan is effectively stateless at the moment.
Deepan was later released from immigration detention with strict conditions
after India refused to issue him travel documents. Since then, he has been
fighting to regain his Canadian citizenship. Most recently Deepan has
brought his struggle to Federal Court where he has launched a charter
challenge to reclaim his citizenship. A decision is due on this matter in
the fall of 2014.
Currently the Justice for Deepan committee is trying to amass political
support from as many community groups as possible and fundraise for his
legal defense fund.
So, the reason we are contacting your group today is to request your
support for the following three things:
1) That your group endorse the sign-on statement to denounce double
punishment and to demand that his citizenship be immediately restored (To
confirm an endorsement, please send a confirmation email to
justicefordeepan at gmail.com)
2) That your organization share information about Deepan’s case over email
lists and social media (like this article, or this article, or this flyer;
Or simply share/like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter)
3) That you donate to the legal defence fund within your means. $100-$1000
would be very much appreciated as we have upwards of $40,000 to raise in
the coming months to pay for legal expenses related to the charter
challenge in federal court. Organizational contributions vary from $200 to
$2000 thus far. (Contact us for mailing address for cheques)
If you have any questions, we will also be happy to answer them. If you
have suggestions of other groups we should reach out to, please help us by
passing the word and forwarding information to us.
Thank you for your time,
