Our working group, the RSM, is holding a panel with the International
Campaign Against War on the People of India! It will be on Mon 27th between
6 - 8/9 pm in Ross South room 167.
Description:
Come out for an open discussion on the situation in India, where for the
past five years the government has been waging all-out war on its
population; murdering, raping and detaining tens of thousands of activists,
militants and civilians in an attempt to crush increasingly popular
resistance movements. This brutal crackdown, named “Operation Greenhunt”,
receives financial and military support from the U.S., Israel and
increasingly Canada.

Presentations will focus on the intensification of this repression under
the new Hindu-Fascist Modi government and on other long-standing wars in
India, such as the occupation of Kashmir and attacks against Muslim and
Dalit communities. Finally we will touch on what we can do here in Toronto
to oppose the war on the people of India
and stand in solidarity with the brave organizations and organizers
fighting back!

Rebels With A Cause is a FREE annual 5-day film festival that showcases
artistic reflections of social justice issues and critical documentations
of unsung community work.

Each year we curate 5 main programs of short film and video works – Red
Riot, Witness Within, Art in Action, Carving Coming and Dead Ducks which
deal with Indigenous, systemic, representation & racialized immigrant,
queer & trans, and environmental justice issues respectively. All our
programs are followed by panels consisting of participating filmmakers and
curators.

We place strong emphasis on community development and solidarity building
by partnering with many community and arts organizations such as Regent
Park Film Festival, imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, Parkdale Film
+ Video Showcase, Ontario Public Interest Research Group, Trans Film
Screening Series, Vtape , Students for A Free Tibet, Filipino Canadian
Youth Alliance of Ontario, Cinema Politica, etc.

Besides the main festival taking place in October annually, we organize
screenings and events throughout the year and host a blog of reviews of
free online shorts – Reelsview.

*6. **Jeremy Brockway: War Resistor Needs Your Help!*

Dear friends,

Our family has received notification that we must leave Canada by the 24th
of October. You may be wondering what practical steps you can take to help
support our family. Here are some ideas:

1. Write a letter by TUESDAY October 14th at 5pm to Steven Blaney, Minister
of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (with copies to Thomas Mulcair,
Justin Trudeau and our lawyer Alyssa Manning) –

Let him know that:

• The Brockway family has lived in Canada for the past 6 years.

• We have three Canadian born children, William age 6, Wesley age 4, and
Alden age 2

• I, Ashlea, am active in the community, volunteering both in the
children’s school and for a Senior Citizen visiting program.

• My husband, Jeremy, is a U.S. veteran who suffers from severe
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of combat stress. He is
too sick to be sent back to the United States to face court martial and
jail time.

• Forcing him back to the U.S. at this time will cause his condition to
deteriorate and increase the risk of suicide.

• The impact of this deportation on the entire family will be devastating.

• Ask the Minister to administratively stay Jeremy’s removal pending the
disposition of his

federal court applications.

Send letters to: Hon. Steven Blaney Minister of Public Safety House of
Commons

Ottawa, ON Canada K1A 0A6

Steven.blaney at parl.gc.ca

Please copy letters to:

• Thomas Mulcair, Leader of the Official Opposition –
thomas.mulcair at parl.gc.ca

• Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party – justin.trudeau at parl.gc.ca

• Alyssa Manning, lawyer – manninga at lao.on.ca

This is of the utmost importance and will help with our current case.
Please make this a priority!

2. Donate to the War Resisters Defence Fund

Donations are urgently needed for the war resisters defence fund. You can
make a donation online athttp://gofundme.com/letthemstay

Or send a cheque or money order made out to WAR RESISTERS SUPPORT CAMPAIGN
to:

427 Bloor Street West, Box 3 Toronto, ON M5S 1X7

This fund helps with any costs we incur during this ordeal. They help with
lawyer costs, travel costs and cover any of the forms we require. They do a
great many things to help us. Please feel free to share this info with any
mailing lists or friends you wish.

3. Volunteers needed

Our lawyer is trying her best to win an appeal of our decision. In the
event that doesn’t happen we will only have a few days to leave the country. I
need volunteers who would be willing to help me pack our necessities before
we leave. I would also appreciate volunteers to help arrange a garage sale
for after we have left with the proceeds helping support us with any extra
costs that come our way. Providing childcare while packing and other
errands are being finished. If you feel you can help in any of these
manners and are in need of more information, please let me know. I believe
that we will be having a fundraiser in the near future. Let’s hope it
doesn’t come to that but we best plan for if it does!

*7. **Peace Rally: Canada Out of Iraq - Stop Bombing Syria*

*Saturday October 25, 20142:30 pmU.S. Consulate - 360 University Avenue
(just north of Osgoode subway station)*
Why we say NO to Canada’s war in Iraq

We have all seen the pictures and read the reports abut the brutal
sectarian group ISIS in Iraq and Syria and many people want to “do
something” to stop the terror. However, the US led bombing campaign, that
Canada has just joined, is not going to help.

Here’s why we say no to the war in Iraq and Syria.

It will make things worse
- Every bombing campaign kills civilians and every civilian killed means
more recruits for ISIS.
- The actions of the US and its allies are legitimizing ISIS as an
anti-imperial force to people in the region.
- Already, the airstrikes have led opponents such as the Jabhat al-Nusra to
join in common cause with ISIS. Bombing is making these groups stronger.

ISIS is a product of US-led war in the region
- The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 killed 1 million people, destroyed
infrastructure and the economy and fueled sectarian divisions due to a US
mandated constitution that gives power and resources to groups based on
religious or ethnic identity.
- The US stoked sectarian divisions to halt a unified opposition to their
rule.
- Western powers have flooded Syria with weapons which have now and will
continue to fall into the hands of ISIS

It won’t work
- ISIS can simply melt into the heavily populated cities and hide.
- Many of the forces that have created ISIS were present in Iraq after the
invasion in 2003 including former Baath party members and sectarian groups.
Even with hundreds of thousands of troops on the ground, the US was unable
to stop these groups.
- ISIS receives support from people in Saudi Arabia, a key western ally
that beheads roughly 80 people a year. The response from the west to Saudi
support for ISIS is to arm them. Canada sold them $10 billion in weaponry
last year. Unless that source of money and weapons ends, ISIS will continue.

This is a continuation of George Bush’s war, a war based on lies
- The US went to war in 2003 based on fake intelligence about weapons of
mass destruction. It was never about bringing peace or security, but about
controlling oil resources.

This war is fueling Stephen Harper’s agenda to militarize Canada
- Under the Conservatives, military spending has reached its highest levels
since World War II. There are now plans to expand Canadian military bases
around the world. And the military is fast becoming a central thread in the
fabric of society.
- Harper is using this moment to deport US Iraq war resisters from Canada
so he can silence their calls for peace.
- 69 per cent of Canadians opposed the last war on Iraq in 2003. The only
party to support the war then and now are the Conservatives.

Canadians were right to oppose war in Iraq in 2003. We need to stand up
again and say no to perpetual war! Get Canada out of Iraq!

*8. Launch Party & Report Back from Unis'to'ten With Special Guests!*

Its finally coming together!

Enjoy an evening of updates from the powerful and growing grassroots
indigenous resistance movement and the climate justice movement more
broadly. Speakers will be touching on their recent visits to Unist'ot'en
Camp <https://www.facebook.com/unistoten>and the People's Climate March
<https://www.facebook.com/peoplesclimatemarch>.

Then stay for a performance from Test Their Logik
<https://www.facebook.com/TestTheirLogik>!!

This event also serves as the official launch of 'The Sustainers Club', a
grassroots fundraising effort with 100% of the proceeds going to indigenous
communities resisting unwanted extractive industries and protecting the
land and water for our future generations.

Like the non governmental organization model, the Sustainers Club asks
members to pledge a monthly amount to support the efforts of indigenous
communities who either are already taking daily direct action to prevent
unwanted development on traditional lands, or, like so many communities we
heard from during our time at the camp, are ready and willing to begin
camps and blockades but lack the proper training and resources to meet
their needs. Instead of large lump sum amounts, what i heard was a need for
steady but modest donations to allow for simple things like ongoing
transportation and food costs as well as building materials.

There is lots to learn and share as we embark on how urban communities can
better support land defense initiatives and i really encourage people to
see this kind of relationship as one of healing, interdependence and
strengthening ties between those who long to return to the land and those
on the land waiting for the rest of us to return.

Special guests and lots of surprises abound!

*10. Support for **Deepan Budlakoti*

We contact you today to request that your organization endorse and support
the Justice for Deepan campaign whose goal is to support Deepan Budlakoti's
struggle to reclaim his Canadian Citizenship.

In 2010, while Deepan was in jail, the Canadian government decided that he
was not a Canadian citizen despite being born in Canada. In December 2012,
after he had fully served his sentence, they decided to further detain him
in immigration detention for several months while they attempted to deport
him to India where his parents were born. Yet, Deepan has lived in Canada
all his life, was issued a Canadian passport and has no other citizenship.
Deepan is effectively stateless at the moment.

Deepan was later released from immigration detention with strict conditions
after India refused to issue him travel documents. Since then, he has been
fighting to regain his Canadian citizenship. Most recently Deepan has
brought his struggle to Federal Court where he has launched a charter
challenge to reclaim his citizenship. A decision is due on this matter in
the fall of 2014.

Currently the Justice for Deepan committee is trying to amass political
support from as many community groups as possible and fundraise for his
legal defense fund.

So, the reason we are contacting your group today is to request your
support for the following three things:

1) That your group endorse the sign-on statement to denounce double
punishment and to demand that his citizenship be immediately restored (To
confirm an endorsement, please send a confirmation email to
justicefordeepan at gmail.com)
2) That your organization share information about Deepan’s case over email
lists and social media (like this article, or this article, or this flyer;
Or simply share/like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter)
3) That you donate to the legal defense fund within your means. $100-$1000
would be very much appreciated as we have upwards of $40,000 to raise in
the coming months to pay for legal expenses related to the charter
challenge in federal court. Organizational contributions vary from $200 to
$2000 thus far. (Contact us for mailing address for cheques)

If you have any questions, we will also be happy to answer them. If you
have suggestions of other groups we should reach out to, please help us by
passing the word and forwarding information to us.

Thank you for your time,
