Jane-Finch and other Communities living in poverty know from bitter
experience that the reality we face is very different:
• The minimum wage has been set at a level that leaves people in poverty
• Those on Ontario Works (OW) and ODSP are living on incomes that leave
them unable to feed themselves and pay the rent
• The real value of social assistance payments has fallen by some 55% since
1994 and people have continued to get poorer during the years the Liberals
have been in office despite all promises
• The vital Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefits that kept people
housed has been taken away
• Many people on ODSP are now facing medical reviews that threaten to take
away their income
We demand:
-Raise the rates! (raisetherates.ca)
-Raise the Minimum Wage to $14 Now! (raisetheminimumwage.ca)
- An end to racial profiling and targeting of people of color and youth
-Affordable: decent housing, healthy food, prescriptions, childcare, transit
-An end to environmental racism in our community and a stop to the Line 9
pipeline
-Status for all, and an end to immigrations raids and deportations
-Free education and health care, safe working conditions and benefits for
all
- End tax cuts benefiting the rich: higher tax rates for the rich and
corporations
Six years ago JFAAP was formed on the corner of Jane and Finch. We, along
with many other community members and allies, have fought back and made
many gains, but poverty still prevails and has got worse. Our community
continues to be facing serious social and economic inequities making it the
most systematically excluded and disadvantaged neighborhood in Toronto.
Come and join us to celebrate the victories, and to challenge all levels of
government to do more to eradicate poverty and put an end to the systemic
oppression of people of color, new immigrants, and low income communities.
Bring your drums, banners, and signs!!!
