Decolonizing Notions of Tibetans as Chinese

*Time*: 1pm - 3pm
*Location*: Room 313 Student Centre @ York University, Keele Campus

Lhakar Diaries contributor and MA Candidate Dawa L of University of
Colorado, Cultural Anthropology will be facilitating a free workshop at
York University on May 26th, 2014 at the Student Centre Rm 313 from 1-3pm
on creating a discussion on decolonizing the Tibetan identity. Tibetans |
Students | Allies welcomed.

*Workshop Details:*
The purpose of the workshop is to understand and interrupt the notion of
Tibetans as Chinese through the historical exploration of the Chinese
state’s narrative of Tibet. The presentation will map out the discursive
formation of how the Chinese state formed and constructed the idea of Tibet
as part of China’s historical and primitive past while taking on the task
of constructing Tibetan as “backwards-primitive” natives in need of China’s
modernization projects that came in the form of invasion and colonization.

*Workshop Goal: *
The goal of this talk is to interrogate this notion by the Chinese of
Tibetans as “Chinese” and to open possible discussions that address why
most Chinese cannot conceptualize the Tibetans as a separate group of
people that do not identify themselves as Chinese. For the Tibetan
audience, this lecture will hopefully add more historical depth to the
current conversation in the Tibetan polity on the middle-way policy, which
places emphasis on the need for Tibetans and Chinese to engage in
“dialogue” and where they can maybe locate the puzzlement and confusion
from the Chinese side.

*Style:*
The lecture style will be interactive in certain sections. I hope to incite
discussion among the audience to share their own experiences in dealing
with this notion of Tibetans as Chinese to supplement the talk. The talk
will be accompanied by a Q&A session that will also be interactive.

*FREE WORKSHOP*
Refreshments & Snacks Provided | Wheelchair Accessible | Plz msg me if you
have any transportation concerns, we will do our best to assist you.
