*2. **Book Launch - Confronting Injustice: Social Activism in the Age of
Individualism (Hosted by OPIRG York)*

*Date*: Wednesday, March 12, 2014
*Time*: 6pm
*Location*: York U Student Centre, Room 313

According to recent estimates 400,000 people die every year as a result of
human-made global warming. The UN projects that 3 billion additional people
may be pushed into extreme poverty by 2050 because of environmental
destruction. The scale of the problems we face should make it clear that
individualist, lifestyle-centric approaches to activism will not suffice.
We need to change the structures of our social system, not our light bulbs.
"Confronting Injustice" seeks to expose the structural roots of the
injustices we must confront, and outlines an approach to activism which
transcends the hopeless individualism of our time.

proposed reversal of Enbridge's Line 9.

*Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage: joining under the banner of $14 Now!

Kathleen Wynne talks about poverty reduction while imposing deeper poverty
on our communities. She has been a leading member of the Government all
while social assistance (OW and ODSP) rates have lost even more of their
spending power. She was a cabinet minister while the minimum wage was
frozen, while the Special Diet was slashed and while the Community Start Up
and Maintenance Benefit was being eliminated. There is no question that the
Liberals added their own misery to the brutal cuts that the Harris Tories
imposed in 1995. Today a single person on Ontario Works is expected to
survive on just $626 a month, while rent and cost of living continues to
rise beyond reach.

As we potentially head into another round of provincial elections in the
spring, we will not be swayed by fake gestures and empty rhetoric from any
politicians. We are marching on the Convention to demand from all parties
that enough is enough:

* Raise social assistance (OW and ODSP) rates 55% Now! Restore the spending
power lost since 1995!
* Raise the minimum wage to $14/hour Now!
* Restore the Special Diet and Community Start Up Benefits!
* No merger of OW and ODSP, stop the attack on Disability benefits!

*9. **APPEAL for SUPPORT - Grassy Narrows Youth Group*

March 9, 2014

Dear Friends,

This is an appeal for support for the Grassy Narrows Youth Group, who is
organizing to fight a new round of clearcut logging slated to begin this
spring.

As you may be aware, I've been in Grassy Narrows for the past two months. I
have been coming here for long visits for nearly a decade now. When I'm
here, I usually stay with Chrissy Swain, who as you may know is one of the
women who initiated the Grassy Narrows Blockade in 2002. Chrissy continues
to be one of the most dedicated and inspiring figures out there in 'the
movement.'

The Grassy Narrows Blockade has kept industrial scale clearcut logging
operations out of the heart of their Territory for more than a decade,
while hunting, trapping and fishing, as well as other traditional
activities have seen somewhat of a resurgence in the time, as has political
engagement in the community. (
http://freegrassy.net/2012/12/03/longest-running-first-nations-blockade-continues/
)

Sadly, the Ontario Government is about to commence a new 10 year "forest
management plan" that will gut Grassy Narrows Territory. It will take over
50 000 hectares out of a forest that has already been more than 50% logged
over the past fourty years. (
http://freegrassy.net/2013/12/23/wynne-ruins-xmas-in-grassy-narrows-logging-plan-approved/
)

You may also remember that Grassy Narrows is a community dealing with yet
new cases of mercury poisoning, still resulting from industrial dumping at
the Dryden Pulp and Paper Mill in the 60's. (
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/mercury-poisoning-effects-continue-at-grassy-narrows-1.1132578
)

I am here working as the 'administrative coordinator' for a new Grassy
Narrows Youth Group that is dedicated to pursuing "cultural resurgence and
land protection as a single inseparable process." The founding members of
the group are Chrissy's eldest son Edmond, and Judy Da Silva's eldest
daughter Taina, both of whom I've known since before they were teenagers.
They are now being positioned as the forefront of a new generation of
grassroots leadership in the community and I am tremendously honoured to be
able to work with and support them. (
http://www.kenoradailyminerandnews.com/2014/03/04/grassy-narrows-youth-promise-direct-action-to-stop-logging-inside-whiskey-jack
)

The new Youth Group, which formed out of last year's annual Grassy Narrows
Youth Gathering, is currently organizing in the community as well as
building skills and capacity. They are preparing for the spring when the
logging is scheduled to recommence.

Not only is the Youth Group fronting the fight against the logging plan and
getting youth out on to the land, they are also strategizing long term to
take on mining expansion in their territory and the Energy East tarsands
pipeline project. This is a group making long term commitments and
strategizing accordingly.

Thus far the Group's funding has come almost exclusively from grants,
primarily from the Indigenous Environmental Network and Western Mining
Action Network. We are expecting more grant money to come in and hoping
that can be relatively sustainable in the long term. Unfortunately, that
money moves slowly and some funding we were counting on fell through; yet
the commencement date for the logging plan--April 1--is quickly approaching.

This is an urgent appeal for some direct funding support.

This request is only going out, privately, to a small handful of people
whom I am hoping can find a way to make a donation quickly. We are seeking
donations in the range of a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars,
seeking to raise a total of five or six thousand dollars through this means
by the end of the month.

Right now our bank account is almost empty while we wait for grant money to
come in.

To put this funding request in perspective, our full monthly budget is less
than $2,000 per month, which is about the same as two persons' round trip
flight across the country. (And for the record, I am not getting paid for
my role in the group).

Over the spring and summer we are going to be building a permanent camp on
the trapline of one of the Group's core members' family--a site directly
threatened by a scheduled clearcut logging block.

This is an appeal for money, something that the Grassy Narrows Youth Group
actually needs somewhat urgently at the moment--I regret waiting till this
point to write this letter; it is something I've been considering for a
while. If a donation, even a small one, is something you can help with,
please contact me as soon as you can, either be phone or email, or feel
free to just send money via interac.

Eventually, we will have some form of sustainable funding option for people
who are interested and/or the option of offering charitable tax receipts,
but again, this appeal comes in lieu of some funding that we were counting
on having fallen through, and had to be sent before we were fully prepared
to do general public outreach. We apologize, but also hope you will receive
and consider this letter in that spirit.

Sincerely,

Alex Hundert.

ps. If you received this letter but are not in a financial position to
contribute at this time, but likely know someone would be, please feel
encouraged to approach them on our behalf. Thank you.
