Hello everyone,

There are many events going on at York U and in the city in the next few
days and week. Below are two events happening tomorrow at York U- we will
try to post another digest with upcoming events by the end of the week.
It is with great sadness that we announce that there will be a vigil for
Ali Mustafa, a York alumni and OPIRG York alumni, who was killed in Syria
this past Sunday.
Details for the vigil are below. We are hosting in order to help
collectively heal from this loss.

We do also have an exciting book launch at 6pm tomorrow evening, by one of
York's very own students, and an active member of Jane Finch Action Against
Poverty- please come out!

As always, If you're interested in volunteering, or have any questions,
please get in touch with Victoria, at victoria at opirgyork.ca.
We always are in need of volunteers! And stop by the OPIRG York office
anytime -- Room 449C Student Centre!

*1. **Candlelight Vigil In Memory of Ali Mustafa, at York University*

*Date: *Wednesday, March 12
*Time*: 4pm
*Location*: Vari Hall, York University

Ali was a friend to many of us at York- students, faculty and staff, who
did some awesome organizing work on campus - He participated in groups like
SAIA, was one of the founders of the YU Free Press, and participated in
many actions and events at York . Ali will be missed by the community. (Ali
Moustafa, 29, and seven others were killed Sunday when a pair of explosive
devices were dropped in Aleppo,
Syria.<http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/ali-moustafa-toronto-born-journalist-killed-in-syria-1.2565923>
)

We want to pay our respects with a vigil on campus. Please join us this
Wednesday at 4pm, meeting in Vari Hall. We will have candles, but please
also bring your own. We will light the candles outside.

We want to give people an opportunity to share their personal experiences
of and with Ali, in an effort to collectively heal from this tragedy.

Please join us this Wednesday at 4pm.

*2. **Book Launch - Confronting Injustice: Social Activism in the Age of
Individualism (Hosted by OPIRG York)*

*Date*: Wednesday, March 12, 2014
*Time*: 6pm
*Location*: York U Student Centre, Room 313

According to recent estimates 400,000 people die every year as a result of
human-made global warming. The UN projects that 3 billion additional people
may be pushed into extreme poverty by 2050 because of environmental
destruction. The scale of the problems we face should make it clear that
individualist, lifestyle-centric approaches to activism will not suffice.
We need to change the structures of our social system, not our light bulbs.
"Confronting Injustice" seeks to expose the structural roots of the
injustices we must confront, and outlines an approach to activism which
transcends the hopeless individualism of our time.
