*What role do working groups play at OPIRG?*
Working groups are central to the functioning of OPIRG. They consist of a
group of volunteers who work on a specific issue pertaining to
anti-oppressive, anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, social justice and
environmental issues. The working groups are dedicated to enacting change
on campus and/or in the broader community, and function autonomously.
Working groups receive funding from OPIRG and access to the OPIRG office.
OPIRG York is committed to change at York University but we ALSO envision
larger community interaction. We want to blend student organizing with
grassroots activism to ensure broad social and environmental change. Thus,
we are encouraging applications for working groups with a broad vision,
especially those who come from traditionally marginalized communities.
*The 2013-2014 OPIRG York working groups are:*
- YU Free Press
- Environmental Justice
- Students Against Israeli Apartheid
- Filipino Canadian Youth Alliance – Ontario (UKPC/FCYA-ON)
- Students for a Free Tibet
- Incendies
- Revolutionary Student Movement

possible- DEADLINE IS JULY 25th, 2014.(http://opirgyork.ca/working-groups)

cover!

on that isn’t represented start your own! We provide lots of support,
funding and outreach help to get your issue out there to the York
community.*

*3. **YU Free Press is looking for editors + new volunteers -- Learn & get
experience in Alternative Media!*
The YU Free press is an alternative news magazine at York that supports
critical analysis of the corporate media model. We are firmly opposed to
oppression in all its possible forms (gender, sexual orientation, race,
disability, religion, class, etc.) and are dedicated to upholding and
promoting a clear vision of social justice through the publication of
labour, union, and activist-positive material.
Some of the features over the past 7 years have covered issues such as:
Integrity in Journalism
Environmental Justice: race, displacement, and land
Violence Against Native Women
Access to Information as Access to Freedom
State Oppression and Police Brutality
Analysis of Student Struggles Around the World
We are excited for new submissions in the fall and are looking to establish
a team to keep this current of critical thought thriving in the years to
come.
There are volunteer opportunities within all parts of the paper - editorial
or otherwise. We will do training with new folks who want to get involved
and have little to no experience, but also appreciate anyone with
experience or new ideas to add to the paper! Just let us know!

*8. **United Against Detentions - Call to Action*
On September 17, people locked up in immigration hold at Central East
Correction Centre, a max security prison in Lindsay, Ontario, will mark the
1 year anniversary of their ongoing strike against immigration detention.
Around September 17th, we will unite to demand an end to unjust immigration
controls, and freedom of movement for all our communities.
Join us! Create people-powered mobilizations with community meetings,
public protests and direct actions where ever you are.
Increased immigration detentions and deportations are the direct result of
laws that exclude migrant workers, refugees, parents and grandparents, and
low-income people from full status. This September, we will challenge
Harper's anti-immigrant agenda. At the same time, we will bring together
diverse movements for social and ecological justice to build community
visions of just migration.
This isn't just about Canadian immigration policies. In a world of climate
catastrophes, war, economic inequity and increased social oppression, our
friends and families are forced to leave their homes here, and around the
globe. Indigenous people continue to have their homes and territories made
uninhabitable by corporate profiteers acting with government sanction. This
September, we will link our struggles against all the forces of
displacement.
To do this, we need to act together.
September 17th.
Join us in Toronto. Or organize an action in your community.
