York University has a long history of protest and social movements. Lead by
both student and community members there have been many successes, from
staying unjust deportations of students, to getting the University to
commit to stop selling bottled water by 2015. But along with these
successes, there have been student and activist repression, a fear on
behalf of the York administration.

York’s prohibitive actions of banning of student groups and individuals,
demonstrations and freedom of expression, along with the use of security
and increasing police presence contribute to racial profiling and further
restrictions of student rights and freedoms, stereotyping of the Jane and
Finch community and a continued denial of gender based violence issues
without making an effort to address and. At the same time, the University
invests its money (yes, student money) into war and occupation in other
countries and into fossil fuel companies that pollute and destroy
communities and the earth.

OPIRG York brings you “FEAR OF AN ACTIVE CAMPUS!” – DisOrientation 2014!
We call on York to be afraid – Fear our resistance, resilience and fear our
challenging of your policies and rules! This is an active campus, and
together, OPIRG York, community groups, allies, students and community
members will challenge you!

For years on the York University campus, OPIRG York, its allied
organizations and community members have put together an alternative
orientation week open to students and community members. By bringing
together a wide range of campus and community groups, DisOrientation aims
to draw links between the many different kinds of political, environmental
and social justice based organizing that exist on campus and in our
communities.

This year’s DisOrientation is to be held on and near the York University
campus, from Monday, September 22nd to Friday, September 26th. Throughout
the week, OPIRG York and partner organizations will be offering a series of
amazing workshops, panels and teach-ins, filled with storytelling,
skill-sharing and art-making. DisOrientation is fundamentally about sharing
skills, stories, and knowledge that demonstrate the vibrancy of our
communities.

Come be part of the response to York’s fear!
Fear…OF AN ACTIVE CAMPUS!

Many of us are not aware that we live in a society that benefits certain
people at the cost of other people being denied these same benefits. In
this workshop, we will explore, define and unpack the terms Privilege and
Oppression and the different ways they affect us/and the society we live
in. We will also take a closer look at “Anti-Oppression” and the work that
it often includes – and excludes. Through collective strategizing and art,
we will examine and explore a more wholesome approach (one that includes
accountability, healing, creation and resistance) in the ways we navigate
our own personal journeys in grounding ourselves within these systems and
the different ways we can support each other.

*Please fill out a registration form so we know how many interested
volunteers to expect:*
