**THE EVENING**

We will begin the evening with a story-sharing session facilitated by
members of THE BEEHIVE DESIGN COLLECTIVE. This will focus on “Mesoamerica
Resiste”, the Collective’s most recently completed graphic, the making of
which spanned 9 years! It illustrates “stories of resistance, resilience
and solidarity from Mexico to Colombia” in response to “mega-infrastructure
projects that are literally paving the way for free trade agreements” which
threaten to devastate local communities. Since the research for this
graphic included a visit to COFADEH in Honduras, emphasis will be put on
the stories which they shared.
http://beehivecollective.org/beehive_poster/mesoamerica-resiste/

The story-sharing session will be followed by performances from LIDO
PIMIENTA and RUBEN ESGUERRA!

LIDO PIMIENTA is a Toronto-based Colombian born interdisciplinary
artist-curator and musician. She has performed, exhibited, and curated
around the world since 2002. Her work explores the politics of gender,
race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in
the Latin American Diaspora and vernacular. Her music incorporates (for
starters) electronic beats, analog synths, Afro-Colombian rhythms and
out-of-this-world chanting. The release of her first album "Color LP"
opened the gate for several collaborations with artists in Canada and
around the world, making her one of the most prolific song-writers,
lyricists and improv virtuosos of her generation. She is currently working
on a new album entitled "La Papessa", at the same time as pursuing a degree
in Art Criticism and Curatorial Practice at The Ontario College of Art and
Design University (OCADU).
http://lidopimientart.tumblr.com/

RUBEN ESGUERRA is a Toronto-based Colombian born musician, poet, educator
and activist. He began playing professionally at the age of 17 and in 2012,
after many years of hard work, he released his first album "A New
Tradition". This also happens to be the name of Esguerra's 13 piece band.
Ancestral musical styles + urban cultural expressions are what make up "A
New Tradition". It incorporates ancient instruments such as the 2000 year
old indigenous kuizi bunzi flute (a.k.a. Colombian gaita) with more recent
instruments such as the turntables, and then builds upons these sounds with
a mix of spoken word, hip-hop, Latin rhythms and melodies. Some of the
themes which are central to Esguerra's work include - global economic
inequality, violence at the hands of multinational corporations, police
brutality, and, on a more positive note, unity within cultural diversity.
When he is not playing music, Esguerra is busy working as the lead program
instructor at the Palisades Media Arts Academy at Jane and Finch, a program
that provides at-risk youth with musical training as a means for
self-expression and empowerment.
http://www.newtraditionmusic.com/BenyEsguerraEPK/Bio.html

Once the performances wrap up, the space will open up for a FREESTYLE JAM!
There are musical instruments on hand so no need to bring any.. unless you
really feel like it.

*5. **Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park Presents (Mus)Interpreted*

For the month of April, Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas Street East, Toronto)
is hosting (Mus)Interpreted, a group exhibition featuring the work of over
20 local, young Muslim contemporary female artists. Their lived realities
are expressed using painting, photography and installation. In these works,
they recognize that they belong to themselves and not the constructions
created by the media, governments or their communities. Together they
explore and interrogate the notions and spaces in which Muslimah’s are
defined and redefined. Rooted in Regent Park, the show takes up physical
space in a neighborhood where Muslimahs have created art for decades.
(Mus)Interpreted is a collective visioning of their individual and communal
“herstories” shared and negotiated through their created works.

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Catering will be
provided by the Afghan Women’s Centre.

Closing Reception: Thursday, May 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and will feature
spoken word and musical performances, artist talks and presentations.

(Mus)Interpreted is free and open to the public daily (Monday to Friday,
8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Saturday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm) from April 3 –
May 1, 2014 in the first and second floor Hallway Galleries.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Outburst! Young Muslim Women’s
Project, The Truth & Dare Project and SpeakSudan in partnership with
Artscape at Daniels Spectrum.

Daniels Spectrum is a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration,
with programming rooted in Regent Park and open to the world. It is a place
where people come to be inspired, to learn, to share, to create. It
showcases artistic talent, acts as an incubator for creativity and a

*6. **Premier Wynne: Scrap the new WSIB policies that will increase injured
worker poverty!*

The Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) is trying to radically change
the workers’ compensation system in Ontario, at the expense of all workers.
It is attempting to push through a series of policies that, if passed, will
ensure that fewer injured workers will be entitled to compensation, and
those who are entitled will get far less. And costs that should be paid by
employers will be downloaded onto working people by pushing more injured
workers onto social assistance.

This approach is fundamentally wrong and profoundly unjust. All workers
deserve to be protected if they get hurt at work. These policies, though,
go the other direction – they take away protection and restrict
compensation. Because of this, the draft policies must be scrapped now.

*PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION* to Premier Kathleen Wynne, asking her to hold
true to her poverty reduction platform by stepping in to stop these
regressive policies from being implemented.

Share the link to send a strong message to the Premier that we want justice
for injured workers!

*7. **Latin American and Caribbean Solidarity Network’s (LACSN) 6th annual
Solidarity Month – April 2014*

*Food and Water Sovereignty*

sovereignty:

• The absolute and independent authority of a community, nation, etc.; the
right to autonomy or self-government.

The Latin American and Caribbean Solidarity Network’s (LACSN) is excited to
announce its 6th annual Solidarity Month – April 2014 .

This year’s themes are food and water sovereignty. Our conversations will
focus on understanding what is food and water sovereignty? How communities
and nations ensure their access to nutritional food and clean water today
and in the future. And, looking at how communities and nations in Latin
America and the Caribbean have responded to the commodification of food and
water?

The commodification of food and water happens when basic human needs are
seen as things to be bought and sold for profit. increasingly, corporations
are taking control of food and water resulting in increased food and water
insecurity for most of the world’s population, the proliferation of
genetically modified organisms, the privatization of water, corporate land
grabbing and unsustainable agricultural practices which has resulted in the
destruction of the environment.. This has been and continues to be resisted
globally!

Please join us as we discuss, debate and strategize together and continue
to vision and build food and water sovereignty!

*9. **TORONTO: Heels on Wheels Glitter Roadshow*

*Date*: Monday April 14th, 2014
*Time*: 7pm
*Location*: Tranzac, 292 Brunswick Ave, Toronto
*Cost*: $7 - 15 sliding scale
*FB*: https://www.facebook.com/events/695566890482161

The 2014 Glitter Roadshow features Damien Luxe, Heather Ács, Shomi Noise,
Sabina Ibarrola, Angel Nafis, Alvis Parsley, and wrangler/visual artist
Lizxnn Disaster. The Heels on Wheels Glitter Roadshow tours the US annually
with a dazzling, diverse cabaret of performance art works and acts of
resistance by queer folks of femme-inine spectrum genders.

The show itself consists of six performers, local acts in every city – and
a dance party if you’re lucky! The fearless artists rampage from hi-femme
to femmedrogyny in a wild revue of visceral poetic performance, emotional
escape plans, high femme drag, multimedia mermaids, and rocknroll you can
sink your heels into!

Shomi Noise plays guitar and reads from her zine series “Building Up
Emotional Muscles,” the story of her journey as a Bolivian immigrant
navigating U.S. culture and finding herself through alternative music
scenes. Damien Luxe “Femme Footprints In The Sand” uses mermaids and
powdered milk to explore thriving past poverty. Heather Ács’ “Welcome to
the Waldorf Hysteria” uses multi-media high-femme drag histrionics to reach
beyond language and ask, what do we gain when we lose control? Angel Nafis’
poetry celebrates the everything and everywhere of her world, of love and
divinity, of her black girl brilliance in its vastness and depth. Alvis
Parsley's heartfelt confession draws on their experiences as a genderqueer
Asian while questioning the roles of institutions, authority, and the
ecosystem of the arts with both humor and tenderness.
Sabina Ibarrola melts down and melts hearts in a pop culture performative
exploration of breaking up and breaking through with the help of karaoke
and Carrie Bradshaw. This year also includes a selection of video art by
Louis Chavez, Kristin Li, Ellie Beth, Jacqueline Mary, and Celeste Chan.

Come see the glitter and grit for yourself: don’t miss the fifth Heels on
Wheels Glitter Roadshow, April 11-20, 2014, heelsonwheelsroadshow.com
