How movement groups make decisions has a big impact on our politics, our
effectiveness, and the quality of our activist experience. It can be a
major challenge to find the model that has the right mix of inclusion,
accountability, and efficiency for your group.
Consensus decision-making is a group decision making process that seeks the
consent of all participants. The process of consensus is where participants
all agree to an acceptable decision, even if it does not meet the needs of
everyone. It is a perfect way to learn about negotiation, compromise and
solidarity.
Consensus decision-making helps people become better listeners, more
patient and gives people the opportunity to go in-depth into a
controversial issue. It may be hard, but the benefits are worth it!
This workshop will explore different approaches to consensus and different
tools to facilitate your way through even the hardest meetings!
*About the facilitator:*
Jessica Bell works as a campaigner, facilitator and trainer. She teaches
advocacy at Ryerson University, is a co-founder of the training program,
Tools for Change, and is the co-chair of TTCriders. You can find out more
about Jessica at www.jessicabell.org.
