*1. **SUBMISSIONS CALL-OUT : **Incendies, York U's first and only feminist
publication*

Incendies, York U's first and only feminist publication is accepting
submissions for our upcoming issue!

The theme for the January issue is *‘memory’:*

Our memories shape us, define us, write the narrative of who we are, and
remind us how subjective our realities truly are. We distill our culture
and our identities through how we learn and interpret, and through what we
choose to remember. We distort and transform and agglomerate traditions,
mixing old and new, creating lenses and transforming our identities. How
have your memories shaped you?

We want your pieces about “memory” in any way you can imagine or interpret
it!

Send us your strongest pieces at incendies.publication at gmail.com.
We accept visual art, poetry, short stories, articles, essays and more.

Please review submission guidelines:
http://incendiesmag.wordpress.com/submit/
* ***All submissions must be in by December 2nd, 11:59 pm****

*2. **OPIRG's Community Research Exchange Program Survey*
Are you interested in community based research? Please fill out this survey!

Proposing a Community Research Exchange Program (CREP)
OPIRG Toronto is researching and (hopefully) developing an exciting new
project called the "Community Research Exchange Program" (CREP), which
would match University of Toronto students with Toronto-based social and
environmental justice groups to complete community-directed projects for
credit. It is based on similar programs at other Canadian PIRGs, namely
SFPIRG's Action Research Exchange (ARX), OPIRG Ottawa's Community Research
Program (CRP), and QPIRG's Community-University Research Exchange (CURE).

CREP Goal
In keeping with OPIRG-Toronto's mandate to direct resources and research
towards anti-oppressive, social and evnivonmental justice projects, we hope
CREP will provide opportunities for students to engage in
community-directed research, and support for community organizations with
limited resources to create social change. Our goal is to help transform
the privilege and resources of the academy into socially relevant,
community-based research and political action.

We want to hear from you!
To help us develop a program that suits the interests, priorities, and
capacities of Toronto-based communty groups and student researchers, we've
developed three short surveys for students, faculty, and community
organizations.
If you're interested, please take a few minutes to share your
insight/comments/suggestions/concerns with us. This program is for you and
we want to do our best to tailor it to your needs.

*Why we need to Stop Harper:*
Stephen Harper has led successive governments that put profits and ideology
above the environment,
indigenous sovereignty, immigrant and migrant workers’ rights, has cut
social assistance programs,
slashed healthcare for refugees, diminished funding to the arts, scaled
back women’s rights, shut down
research programs, and the list goes on. The Harper government has stripped
certain organizations of
their charitable status, such as Physicians for Global Survival and the
International Relief Fund for the
Afflicted and Needy, Canada (IRFAN, Canada). And yet the Jewish National
Fund (JNF) has charitable
status in Canada.

*What is the JNF?*
Founded in 1901 at the fifth World Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland,
the JNF is a
quasi-governmental organization. Its primary function then as now is to
acquire and secure land
for use by Jews only, in Palestine and what is now Israel. The JNF is not
only implicated in al-Nakba
(the Catastrophe) of 1948, but is a vital part of the ongoing ethnic
cleansing and colonisation of
historic Palestine. Painting itself as “green,” the JNF perpetrates
environmental racism and
degradation, and land theft.

Currently, the JNF is actively involved in the colonisation of the Naqab
(Negev). Between 30,000 and
70,000 indigenous Arab Bedouin, who are citizens of Israel, will be
forcibly removed from their
ancestral lands and transferred into “townships.” Up to 35 Bedouin villages
will be destroyed. This
will be the largest mass expulsion of Palestinians since 1967. Suhad
Bishara of Adalah, the Legal
Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, sees this as a “second Nakba.”

*7. First Nations Solidarity Working Group Film Screening: Biimadasahwin*
Join us for food, discussion, and a documentary screening of
“Biimadasahwin.”
Wednesday December 4, 2:30-4pm,
109 Atkinson, York University.

Biimadasahwin means “life” in Ojibway. It is the name given to a place and
project led by Darlene Necan, elected spokesperson of off-reserve members
of Ojibway Nation of Saugeen no.258. She began to make her courageous
vision of reclaiming her ancestral Anishinabek territory a reality, by
returning to live on her trapline.

In June 2013, CUPE 3903’s The First Nations Solidarity Working Group,
supported a log cabin home build led by Darlene and other women who are
rebuilding community power. The cabin sits on Darlene's trapline and serves
as a meeting place for community political organizing.

In August, Darlene and her organization, Northern Starlights Citizens of
Saugeen, led the building of infrastructure for Biimadasahwin to be a
gathering and teaching place for youth, community members and supporters.

On December 4, 2:30pm, 109 Atkinson, we will screen a short documentary
which shares Darlene’s story and showcases the collective home building
project, Saugeen land and people in Northwestern Ontario. Come learn about
and support this inspiring project!

*8. Toronto's Homeless Shelters are Full - Open More Shelter Space Now!*
Breakfast, Rally and Call for Deputations

Where: Toronto City Hall, Bay and Queen
When: Wednesday, December 4, 9.00 AM

Download the Flyer Here:http://ocap.ca/files/dec42013flyer2.pdf

Last winter, OCAP took action to challenge overcrowding in the shelters.
The City responded by promising, in April, to ensure that their facilities
would operate at a maximum occupancy of 90%.

They had the option to open up new space immediately. But instead the
immediate response by Hostel Services was to lay down 'flex beds' and try
and cram more people into the shelters. Even with this sad attempt to make
the numbers look better, the City has failed for 8 consecutive months to
abide by its own 90% capacity standard. The crowding is getting worse as
the weather gets colder and the risk of street deaths increases.

On December 4th the Community Development and Recreation Committee of City
Council is meeting once again. They will be receiving a report from their
staff on measures to deal with the crisis in the shelters. OCAP and others
in the community will be going to the Committee meeting to demand no
further delays - the City must open more shelters immediately to ensure no
one else has to die on the streets. Please come out and show the
politicians we will not let them abandon homeless people. No more homeless
deaths.

*Sign up to speak: tell the politicians about your experience of flex
beds, overcrowding and conditions in the shelters. Sign up to speak by
contacting the clerk: email: cdrc at toronto.ca / phone: 416-392-4666 and say
you want to speak to the issue of shelters on December 4th.

OR Contact OCAP if you are interested in speaking and we can add your

*10. Federal Court passed the buck condemning Mahjoub to years of
uncertainty **- we're still waiting to find out why!*
Dear friends and supporters of Mohammad Mahjoub,

On Friday, October 25th, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that the
security certificate against Mohammad Mahjoub was "reasonable" even while
finding that Mr. Mahjoub's right to a fair trial had been violated. On that
same day we rallied against this injustice insisting that the security
certificate regime is unjust and that Mr. Mahjoub must be free.

Though the court announced its decision, the Federal Court's reasons that
led to it have still not been released, as government lawyers decide which
parts will remain secret.

Last week, the Federal Court released its reasons for upholding the
constitutionality of the security certificate process and for finding that
Mr. Mahjoub's charter rights had been violated. In the latter, it accepted
that Mr. Mahjoub's "right to a fair trial pursuant to Section 7 of the
Charter and right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure have been
violated" but chose politically to not throw out the security certificate
proceedings, instead opening the door for an appeal. This is the very
essence of passing the buck, forcing Mr. Mahjoub to live in uncertainty and
anguish for years to come.

There have been some media articles that we detail below but right now we
need your help. This is the time to support Mr. Mahjoub and insist on your
opposition to Canada's unjust systems of detentions and deportations.

* Organizations: Please write statements of support expressing your disgust
at the decision, reiterating your opposition to immigration security
certificates and calling for the immediate release of Mr. Mahjoub.
(Examples are now available here:
www.supportmahjoub.org/archives/category/support.)

* Community Media: Please get in touch if you would like suggestions for
interviews from the many voices who oppose security certificates.

* Everyone: if you would like to be part of the years of struggle that Mr.
Mahjoub now faces, please get in touch at justiceformahjoub at gmail.com. We
are organizing a supporters' strategy meeting in early December and we want
your presence and input.

(Nov 9):
www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/11/06/mohamed_mahjoubs_case_can_go_on_judge_says.html

Mr. Mahjoub's continued detention and the ongoing threat of deportation are
part of a racist, islamophobic immigration system that works to separate
families, repress communities, and isolate individuals. As supporters of
Mr. Mahjoub and as people that oppose the security certificate regime and
the broader injustices of the immigration system we call for freedom for
Mahjoub and the other security certificate detainees, an end to immigration
detention and status for all.

*This screening is co-sponsored by POV Magazine
<http://povmagazine.com/> and Cinema Politica Danforth.*

SYNOPSIS: Insurgence is a documentary about the vast social mobilization
that took place in Quebec during the spring of 2012. Initially propelled by
the student strike for accessible education, the scope of the movement soon
broadened to take on the government, the impunity and violence of the
Montreal police force, the exploitation of untapped natural resources, and
the current economic system.

The strength of the “Printemps Érable” is rooted in anonymity. The movement
allows the common to flow through dispersal, reaching into the solitude of
each protester. Each one recognizes her situation in that of the others;
affective resonance is transmuted to a point of fusion. Repression can only
break up linear collectivities; here, at every turn, at every corner, the
common returns in a swarm.

Épopée is a collective of filmmakers and film craftspeople, created during
the making of Men for Sale, a documentary about the lives of drug users and
sex workers in Montreal. The group was also formed in the context of the
digital revolution and the takeover of national cinemas by television and
large distributors. Épopée reclaims the means of film production through a
newfound creative and collective process. Between 2009 and 2012, Épopée set
up a project in collaboration with sex workers and drug users in Montreal’s
Centre-Sud neighborhood. The project resulted in a website (epopee.me), two
feature films (The State of the Moment and The State of the World), and
several gallery installations. A new feature film, Love in a Time of Civil
War, written during the epopee.me writing workshops, will begin shooting in
November 2012.
