*Discussion Forum: Feminist, Anti-Racist Strategies against Gender-Based
ViolenceDecember 3, 2013 | 3:30 – 5:30 pm | GSA Lounge (Room 430), Student
Centre – Keele Campus*
The discussion of gender-based violence in mainstream analyses often fails
to address the ways in which sexual violence functions not only as a means
of patriarchal control but also as a tool of racism and colonialism.
Meanwhile, anti-violence strategies often result in increased violence
against many communities of colour, in the form of racial profiling, police
brutality, prisons and economic exploitation. This forum invites a
collective discussion on effective anti-violence strategies that can link
the fight against gender-based violence to struggles against other everyday
and structural forms of violence. It will particularly explore
community-based strategies, beyond the criminal justice system, that can
serve to hold perpetrators accountable while ensuring the safety of
survivors.
The forum will feature Beverly Bain (feminist anti-violence, anti-racist
activist and trainer), a representative from the Toronto Rape Crisis
Centre, and others.

gender at yugsa.ca.

*Creativity and Courage: Artists Speak OutTuesday, December 3, 2013 | 6 – 8
pm | GSA lounge (Room 430), GSA Lounge (Room 430), Student Centre – Keele
Campus*
The Centre for Women and Trans People (CWTP), Ontario Public Interest
Research Group, York (OPIRG-York) and CUPE 3903 Trans Feminist Caucus will
host an arts showcase, open to all means of artistic, creative expression,
in pursuit of a more holistic approach towards creating awareness around
gender-based violence. We recognize that gender based violence is motivated
by systems that reproduce racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia,
ableism, classism and other means of marginalization. We will bear witness,
celebrate resilience and educate through the arts.
Come showcase your art that reflects resilience, empowerment, anger,
survival, imagining a world without violence, destroying capitalism,
patriarchy and/or other oppressive systems!
Enjoy the sets of three featured performances, after which the showcase
will follow an open mic style.
For more information on this event, please contact
art_showcase at googlegroups.com.

*Demystifying Sexual Violence: A Workshop with the Toronto Rape Crisis
Centre/Multicultural Women Against RapeWednesday, December 4, 2013 | 2 – 4
pm | GSA Lounge (Room 430), Student Centre – Keele Campus*
Sexual Assault and dating violence continue to occur on a daily basis. At
this YUGSA workshop, facilitated by the Deb Singh from Toronto Rape Crisis
Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, we will discuss what constitutes
sexual violence and contrast it to the many myths which surround it. This
interactive workshop will highlight the ways in which our families, society
and media keep these myths alive, and how we may resist them.
Deb Singh is a counselor and activist at the Toronto Rape Crisis
Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape. Deb is an Indo-Caribbean renegade
warrior and anti-violence activist, Deb has been working with survivors of
sexual violence for the last 10 years. As a 34 year old, queer, working
class woman, she uses interactive workshop tools, art making and writing to
try and get her messages across. Check out her monthly blog at
