The Ontario Liberal Government is sitting on a proposal to merge Ontario
Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) into one program.
The government reports claim the merger of ODSP and OW will make the
system ‘easier’ to access and carry out. The reality is that it’s about
cutting benefits.
Join OCAP at St. Lukes Church for dinner and to talk about this proposed
merger of ODSP and Ontario Works and how we can fight back to stop this
from happening. Listen to other people’s stories and talk about your
worries on how the joining of the programs will affect you.
Speakers:
-A.J. Withers: A.J. is a longtime organizer with the Ontario Coalition
Against Poverty and disability justice issues. They have done ODSP and OW
casework through OCAP and lived on social assistance for over a decade.
A.J. is also the author of Disability Politics and Theory and the If I
Can't Dance Is It Still My Revolution? blog:
http://still.my.revolution.tao.ca/
-Anne K Abbott: Anne is a disability activist. She belongs to both direct
action groups DAMN and OCAP. Anne strongly believes in fighting for the
rights of people who are poor, marginalized, and have disabilities. There
are many ways Anne strives to do this; through her art, her blog, and
speaking at different events. Anne's most noteworthy painting is titled
“Feelings of Invisibility”, in which Anne depicts herself sitting naked in
her wheelchair as blood drips from her left wrist onto the floor and
spelling out: I AM NOT INVISIBLE. Despite being unable to verbalize
words, Anne K Abbott has given many talks at public schools, universities,
and at demonstrations. The topics range widely from what it is like to
live with a physical disability to how she produces her artwork to the
inhumane and neglectful treatment by federal and provincial governments of
people with disabilities. Anne's blog (http://anne-abbott.blogspot.ca)
focuses upon simillar issues. To see the artwork of Anne K Abbott, visit:
http://www.annekabbott.com
-Kyle Vose: Kyle is an HIV/Poverty Activist who graduated the Leadership
Program, and Facilitator Training given through the OAN and ABPRO. He
first got to know of the ODSP Action Coalition through his first project
that he worked on with The Toronto Daily Food bank, which became the
Poverty Reduction Bill. He shortly joined the coalition after attending
their conference held in Toronto. After a couple of years in the
coalition, he was honored to be chosen Co-Chair bringing the leadership
principals with him to the coalition. He currently is a facilitator and
speaker for the Toronto People with AIDS foundation and for FiFe House.

*6. **The Marxist theory of the State [Fightback-YorkU]*
https://www.facebook.com/events/621154591277220
____________
The question of the State in today’s society, plagued by economic crisis,
is an important one for average people across the globe.
>From Europe to the Middle East, from China to the United States, there is
an ever growing austerity agenda of cutbacks and privatization targeting
the majority of people in society. The rich minority under Capitalism are
putting their tool, the State, to work at an increasingly disturbing rate.
In Canada we have seen anti-democratic legislation by the Conservatives
against the labour movement and its increasingly threatening role
internationally. Recently, the brutal crackdown on the Mi’kmaq protests in
New Brunswick. With examples of police oppression during the G20 in 2010 to
the draconian methods of the State during the Quebec Student Movement in
2012, we are seeing but a glimpse of how far our current governments in
power are willing to go in order to bail out the rich with an offensive on
average working people and students.
What is the state? Why does it exist? What is the alternative to today’s
Capitalist State? Join us and feel free to bring your questions and
comments!
Location: Accolade West (ACW) room #209 (York U)
Date: Thursday, November 21st
Time: 6pm-8pm
