*HAPPENING RIGHT NOW -- YFS TO VOTE ON BDS TODAY- 12pm @ The Underground*
Attention York University students, faculty, and community members!
We are calling on all our allies, endorsers, and supporters to come out
today (Thursday) to the Underground @ the Student Centre, York University
for the YFS Board
Meeting, where the YFS will finally vote on passing a BDS resolution.
*The meeting is at 12pm - RIGHT NOW!*
We have submitted our petition of more than 5,000 undergraduate signatures
to the YFS.
Please join us in this historic moment in expressing our solidarity with
our undergraduate students' union, and with the Palestinian people who
made a call-out in 2005 demanding that the world implement a Boycott,
Divestment, and Sanctions campaign against Israeli Apartheid!
The text of the petition and of the YFS resolution is as follows:
Whereas in 1948, the state of Israel was established through the expulsion
of the majority of the Palestinian population, turning them into refugees
whom decades later still cannot exercise their fundamental right to return
as stipulated in UN General Assembly resolution 194.
Whereas since 1967, Israel has illegally occupied the West Bank, Gaza and
East Jerusalem, and has built and continues to expand illegal settlements
and the apartheid wall;
Whereas Israel's entrenched system of racial discrimination against its
own Arab-Palestinian citizens remains intact;
Whereas Israel systematically obstructs Palestinian students' right to
education through military checkpoints and roadblocks, the illegal
apartheid wall, and the frequent closure of cities, routinely preventing
thousands of students and teachers from reaching their schools and
universities;
Whereas on July 9, 2005, 171 Palestinian organizations called upon people
of conscience around the world to implement a global campaign of boycott,
divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, similar to those applied to
South Africa during the apartheid era;
We, the undersigned, demand that our undergraduate students' union, the
York Federation of Students
Join student organizations around the globe by endorsing the 2005 call
from Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions,
recognizing that the right to education is a fundamental human right that
is basic to human freedom;
Commit to, and demand the York administration also commit to, identifying
and divesting from companies that support or profit from Israeli war
crimes, occupation and oppression.
