*OPIRG York AGM and Board of Directors Elections! *

OPIRG’s Annual General Meeting is quickly approaching - April 9th - and we
need you! At the AGM *we will be electing board members* for our Board of
Directors (2013-2014), and so if you’re passionate about OPIRG York and the
work we do, please consider applying! Nomination forms can be picked up at
the OPIRG York office door (Room c449 Student Centre) and are also
available as attachments to this email.

*Do you want to...*

    - Support other students and community members in creating social and
environmental change?
    - Participate in decision-making & visioning for the organization?
    - Apply anti-oppression in programming, policy and other OPIRG
activities?
    - Gain governing experience in a non-profit organization?
    - Become an employer – support, work with, and appreciate staff?

Nomination for the York Public Interest Research Group Board of Directors
is open to any OPIRG member, as long as the nomination is supported by at
least 15 member signatures. All York students who have paid their student
fees and not opted out of OPIRG York’s levy fee are members of OPIRG YORK
and eligible for nomination. We especially encourage women, people of
colour, trans-people, queer people, members of different departments and
faculties, disabled individuals, working class and union members and
diverse religious and cultural communities to run, in order to have a Board
that is representative of the diverse student population at York.


TO NOMINATE yourself or someone you believe has the commitment, interest,
time and ability to be a good Director, submit a completed Nomination Form
between  *Tuesday March 12th, 2013* and  *Tuesday March 26th, 2013* to the
OPIRG York office (Room C449 in the Student Centre). The Deadline for
nominations is 5 p.m, *Tuesday March 26th!*


The Election of the board shall happen at the Annual General Meeting of
OPIRG YORK, to be held on Tuesday April 9th from 1 pm to 3 pm in Room 313
of the Student Centre. All nominees to the board shall introduce themselves
to the membership and an election will be held to determine the board
members for the 2013-2014 term.

*More about the Board of Directors:*

The Board of Directors is responsible for the long-term visioning and
priority-setting of the organization, as well as overseeing its
administration. The Board develops and oversees the budget, which funds
OPIRG York’s initiatives. All Board decisions are made through the
consensus process. Board members are expected to represent OPIRG at events
throughout the year and in networking with other campus and community
organizations.

*What are we looking for in a Board member? *

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, positive, organized,
group-oriented individuals with a commitment to OPIRG.

OPIRG promotes learning through leadership and will help you acquire the
skills you need to be a great Board member, even if you haven't developed
them all yet! The ideal candidate, however, would have experience in some
of the following areas:

     - Principles of anti-oppression
     - Facilitation and consensus-building
     - Policy development
     - Financial management
     - Project management
     - Hiring, staff evaluation, and supervision

The OPIRG Board of Directors is committed to the principles of
anti-oppression and seeks diverse experiences and identities in its
leadership.


*What do Board members actually do?*

     - Participate in decision-making at regular weekly Board meetings
     - Work on specific issues within committees, such as outreach, policy
and activist development
     - Ensure that all activities are consistent with our anti-oppression
mandate
     - Collaborate with staff to set annual priorities through extensive
visioning processes
     - Track the needs, challenges and successes of OPIRG throughout the
year
     - Conduct regular evaluations of staff, events, projects and
priorities
     - Support staff in their work with projects, action groups, and
organizational development
     - Recruit, hire and support new staff when necessary
     - Develop annual budgets and monitor spending through the Treasurer
     - Maintain organizational policies and by-laws, updating them when
necessary
     - Recruit and train new Board members, and hold annual general
meetings and elections!

*Board members can also:

*     - Work with staff to plan events, apply for grants, and network with
other groups
     - Conduct research for new OPIRG initiatives and projects
     - Participate in volunteer orientation, training and appreciation
     - Represent OPIRG at meetings, events, on campus and in the community
     - Identify and participate in opportunities for Board and staff
development
     - Represent OPIRG York at OPIRG network meetings, and work to
strengthen the Provincial network

*There are many ways to get involved at OPIRG. We currently have 8 OPIRG
York working groups:*
Art For Justice, Justice is Not Colour Blind, Students for a Free Tibet, YU
Free Press, Environmental Justice York, Progressive Filipino Canadians for
Community Empowerment and Development (PFCCED), Students Against Israeli
Apartheid, and the Vanier Prison Support Line working group. You can contact
Victoria Barnett, our volunteer coordinator, about ways to get involved in
these working groups: victoria at opirgyork.ca.

*We also have three different collectives: *PrOPIRGanda Radio, Radical
