*Why January 10th?...*

"For me to say that, I'm not afraid to die, I wouldn't be honest. As I
stated, when I began the hunger strike (on the 12th of December) if we do
not see anything positive, thirty days after the start on Jan. 10/13, I'm
willing to give my life so future generations can survive and enjoy the
many gifts from the "Creator". I have a lot of very good reason to want to
live, and I have a lot of faith in all of the Aboriginal People and our
Sisters and Brothers of other color, who are in this struggle to save
"Mother Earth" for those that are living and those not yet born." Chief
Theresa Spence

*Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) New Members' Meeting*

Thursday, January 10
4:30-5:30
Rm. 307 Student Centre (third floor)

Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) at York University is part of
the growing global movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)
against the apartheid state of Israel. We aim to raise awareness and
educate our campus about these issues and to end York's (and Canada's)
complicity in Israeli Apartheid.

Come to the New Members' Meeting and learn about SAIA,
our divestment campaign, and how you can get involved.

If you are unable to attend, just drop us an email and we'll set you up!

For more information, email: saiayork at riseup.net
Be sure to 'Like' us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SAIA.York
And follow us on Twitter @SaiaYork

*************************************

We believe Israel is an apartheid state that resembles South African
Apartheid. Palestinian citizens of Israel are denied from controlling and
developing over 90% of land because they are Palestinian.

Palestinians expelled in 1948 and 1967 are denied the right to return to
their homes and lands, despite the fact that anyone of Jewish background -
from anywhere in the world - has the automatic right to become an Israeli
citizen.

In the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinians live under separate
and discriminatory military law.

The Canadian government provides extensive political and economic support
to the Israeli apartheid regime. Canadian corporations profit through
investments and joint operations with Israeli companies. Canadian
universities have investments in companies that provide weapons to the
Israeli army. They also possess extensive ties to Israeli universities
involved in land confiscations and research for the military occupation.
We work to end all Canadian complicity in Israeli Apartheid.

*Our Facebook event invite:* http://www.facebook.com/events/142971442527419/
*Date*: Friday, January 11th
*Time*: 1 pm
*Location*: Dundas Square

We are at an important time in the #IdleNoMore movement, and we need to
keep momentum up now that Harper has agreed to meet with the AFN. So I’m
writing this post to give everyone a brief overview about the planned #J11
action.

#J11: Global Day of Action
#J11 is being planned as An #IdleNoMore International Day of Action,
Solidarity & Resurgence – on January 11, 2013 – to run parallel to the
meeting between PM Harper and the AFN.

The goal is to raise the profile of the movement, demonstrate our global
presence, and give visibility to our growing momentum as a peoples’
movement first.

As only a few AFN-determined representatives will be chosen to participate
in the meeting with Harper, we thought it would be important to show that
the rest of the movement stands united with one voice, that we are not
going anywhere, and that we are here to demonstrate the strength and
resurgence of our nations. We also want to honour and mark the fact that
Jan 11th will be the 1-month anniversary of Chief Spence’s hunger strike,
and to honour the other chiefs and elders who have been on hunger strike
with her.

All nations and all people from around the world are invited to join in
celebrating and affirming their support for what is happening and the need
to keep things moving forward together.

*Date*: Saturday, January 12th
*Time*: 7pm- 9pm
*Location*: Beit Zatoun 612 Markham Street (just south of Bloor, near

Join the Greater Toronto Workers' Assembly for a 'coffee house' discussion
on:

Anti-capitalism and Feminism

Socialist Feminism in Canada: A Brief History – Meg Luxton

Marxist Feminism: Keywords and Key Concepts – Shahrzad Mojab

Followed by Q and A and informal discussion.

This is the first of three-part monthly series on anti-capitalism and
feminism. Watch for future listings.

More about the speakers:
Meg Luxton: Professor and Director of the Graduate Program of Gender,
Feminist and Women's Studies at York University. Meg has been active in the
women's liberation movement, the National Action Committee on the Status of
Women, and a range of campus and community groups. As a socialist feminist
scholar she writes on feminist politics, women's work (paid and unpaid),
international effort to include women's unpaid work in the UN and the
history of the Canadian women's movement, especially it's left-wing
currents.

Shahrzad Mojab: Professor in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult
Education and Women and Gender Studies, University of Toronto. Scholar,
teacher, and activist, Shahrzad is internationally known for her work on
the impact of war, displacement and violence on women’s learning and
education. Her recent co-edited book, Educating from Marx: Race, Gender and
Learning (2011, with Sara Carpenter)

is an anti-racist feminist analysis of Marxism for a revolutionary feminist
praxis. Shahrzad’s extensive empirical research in diasporic communities in
Canada and Europe and the conflict zones of the Middle East has deepened
our understanding of capitalist and imperialist patriarchy, culture and
fundamentalisms. A unique feature of Shahrzad's work is making knowledge
accessible to the public through the use of arts such as story-telling,
dance, drama, painting and film. Professor Mojab’s research and teaching is
critical of theoretical frameworks which treat race, gender, and class
atomistically. She critiques monopolies of knowledge and power in
education, and advocates dialogical and inclusive pedagogical practices.
