*OPIRG-York statement of support for the Immediate release of York
University professor John Greyson and London doctor Tarek Loubani*
Since last Friday August 16, urgent action has been taken by many Canadians
to call for the release of John Greyson, a Toronto filmmaker and York
University professor and Tarek Loubani, an emergency room physician and
assistant professor at Western University after they were detained during a
stopover in Cairo by Egyptian police while they were on their way to a
hospital in Gaza. The two Canadians have been put on a 15-day detention
order with no clear charges made against them. Ontario Public Interest
Research Group at York University (OPIRG-York) lends their support to
family and friends in calling for the release of John and Tarek and we
encourage all York University students and community members to continue
bringing attention to this matter.
Professor and filmmaker John Greyson is a vital member of the York
University community. He has provided continued support to OPIRG-York and
the work that we do on campus and in the community. Most recently, he
assisted OPIRG-York and members of the York community in organizing the
Rebels with a Cause Film Festival. Both John Greyson and Tarek Loubani were
on their way to the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza as part of an ongoing
academic collaboration with the University of Western Ontario.
An ongoing petition to free Tarek and John has gathered many signatures and
can be found here:

We urge everyone to lend their support and take further action by
contacting Egyptian authorities as well as the Canadian Embassy in Egypt to
ask for the immediate release of Tarek and John. Further information can be
found through tarekandjohn.com

*Art in Rebellion: Building our own Narratives *
*DisOrientation 2013 is here!! *
For years on the York University campus, OPIRG-York, its
allied organizations and community members have put together an alternative
orientation week open to students and community members. By bringing
together a wide range of campus and community groups, DisO aims to draw the
links between the many different kinds of political, environmental and
social justice based organizing that exists on campus and in our
communities.
This year’s “Art in Rebellion!” is to be held on and near the York
University campus, from Monday, September 23rd, 2013 to Friday, September 27
th, 2013. Throughout the week, OPIRG York, alongside community partner the
Centre for Women and Trans People @ York, is offering a series of amazing
workshops, panels and teach-ins, filled with storytelling, skills-sharing
and art-making. DisO is fundamentally about sharing skills, his/herstories,
and knowledge that demonstrate the vibrant talents and capabilities we all
possess.
*Some of the highlights of the week include:*
- Keynote address by Sarah Schulman, an avid HIV/AIDS and queer rights
activist;
- Spoken word workshop facilitated by multi-talented artist, Truth Is;
- "Freedom Fridays” finale event, with music, food, live art and
performances!
If you want to learn about some amazing organizing work being done around
the city, if you want to build networks with other folks that are committed
to fighting for social change or if you just want to join us for some art
fun, *come out to DisOrientation 2013!* We hope to see you there!
*All are welcome! All events are free and wheelchair accessible!! *
