*Help Rhythms of Resistance Toronto- Billeting*

Dear friend of Rhythms of Resistance Toronto,

RoR-Toronto is hosting a special convergence this summer called "Bands
Agitate and Mobilize" (BAM!). We're hosting a bunch of activist musicians
from across the US and Quebec to share skills and strategize and revitalize
creative musical resistance.

Could you help by hosting our guests and giving them a place to sleep
during the weekend of August 23 - 25th?

Supporting us in this way means we won't have to do more fundraising for
accommodation costs, and we can spend more time playing and supporting the
amazing work of justice organizers in Toronto. You will also get to meet
some cool new allies!

If you're away during that time, we could still make use of your space and
could assign a house liaison for you (if you don't have a friend who can
step in), to work out logistics for the space with the guests.

Please read more here & fill in details if you can help: BAM Billetting
Support<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/17mgasRHgLCJrJVuKN-qxLyUNrHbIvvxdZpP28o_X89U/viewform>

Lastly, these people do similar work to Rhythms of Resistance Toronto in
their communities. Here are some links to their bands, so you can see what
great people they are.

- Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble
- Rude Mechanical Orchestra
- Movitas
- MayDay Marching Band
- Tint(A)nar

If you have any hesitations or questions about hosting guests and want to
discuss before you fill out the form, then ask your RoR friend or email:
rortoronto at gmail.com. We'll be happy to answer your concerns.

Thanks for your continued support over the years & see you in the streets,

Rhythms of Resistance Toronto

*CALL-OUT FOR CUPE 3903 DELEGATION TO BIIMADASAHWIN, OJIBWAY NATION OF
SAUGEEN TERRITORY*

Deadline passed, but still many ways to help! (cupe3903fnswg at gmail.com)

Please watch and share this video for more info and to help us reach our
fundraising goal. The deadline is in 4 DAYS!
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/biimadasahwin-gathering-place/x/3163352

To the members of CUPE 3903,

The CUPE 3903 First Nations Solidarity Working Group (FNSWG) – an
autonomous and grassroots committee of the CUPE 3903 membership – is
currently seeking participants to attend an August 2013 delegation to visit
grassroots activists of the Ojibway Nation of Saugeen, Treaty 3 and Treaty
9 territory. This delegation trip is an opportunity to build relationships
with Indigenous people who are on the front lines of colonial resistance by
reclaiming land and building community power, while fighting for housing
and treaty rights. We will also visit the Misheekgogamang Ojibway First
Nation.

These communities are located in Northwestern Ontario, in close proximity
to the Ring of Fire - an area wherein Ontario is pushing for the largest
resource extraction project in the province’s history. The mining project
is opposed by many Indigenous communities. While billions of dollars leave
the region through mining and clearcutting the land, most people in both
communities we will visit face intense poverty. In a context of unhindered
exploitation of Mother Earth, growing housing crises and poverty, as well
as a strengthening Indigenous rights movement fighting for Mother Earth and
all her peoples, real relationships between unions and grassroots
Indigenous activists are crucial in seeking justice for all peoples.

In June 2013, CUPE 3903 FNSWG joined a log cabin home build led by Darlene
Necan, on her ancestral hunting grounds in Saugeen territory. Because
grassroots women reclaiming land and rebuilding home builds community
power. For more info:www.ilpsindigenouscommission.wordpress.com
The delegation will take place in the second week of August and will be
funded through union donations and grassroots fundraising. Members
interested in this trip will be asked to submit a brief political resume
and interest statement. Please contact: cupe3903fnswg at gmail.com

Please review the brochure for the project here:

*Jailbreak! Queer Cover Band Show*

In recognition of Prisoner Justice Day, and building up to the Queer &
Trans Anarchist & Anti-Authoritarian Convergence August 23-25, QueerCore
presents
Jailbreak!, the next installment of the Queer Cover Band Show series.

Prisoner Justice Day is an annual day of remembrance for prisoner lives
lost and in recognition of the injustice, oppression and hypocrisy of the
prison industrial complex. On Prisoner Justice Day, we show solidarity with
those inside prison walls in their fight for humane treatment and better
conditions, and work towards the eventual abolishment of the prison system.

They may not be able to hear our songs, but in our hearts they are not
forgotten.
Pay tribute to their struggle.
Bring your stories and songs of remembrance, resilience and resistance.
Light a candle. Light a fire. Let the flames engulf the prisons and the
state.
We'll set this night ablaze and dance in the ashes.

Project Toronto, which runs a letter writing program to Queer and Trans
identified prisoners in the U.S and Canada.

What is the Queer cover band show??

We are bored and tired of straight cis-gendered white dudes taking up the
majority of space at shows. We want more rad folks to sing and play their
hearts out. For too long we have been excluded. It's time for our glittery
selves to shine.

This space is prioritizing queer/trans people of colour, black, indigenous,
women and all those that are underrepresented and alienated from the music
scene. Let's build our own beats to break down barriers and help create a
music scene that aims to be safe, inclusive and empowering. Have no shame
in your skill level. You can do it!

What is Queercore Toronto?

Queecore, besides the wicked awesome music reference, is an autonomous
collective of queer identified radicals in Toronto committed to injecting
anti-capitalist political ideology into queer community organizing. We
fight the pink washing of the police, the state and the corporations and
will not be co-opted or assimilated into heteronormative, patriarchal,
racist systems of exploitation and consumerism.

Contact us at radicalcoverbandshow.to at gmail.com for assistance building
cover bands, borrowing instruments and finding practice space.

*(Toronto) Revolutionary Frontlines: Reports from the revolutions in
Venezuela, India and the Philippines ** *

*Date*: Monday, August 12th
*Time*: 7pm
*Location*: 5160 OISE, University of Toronto
*Facebook*: https://www.facebook.com/events/416921235090908/

Join to learn more about the ongoing revolutionary processes in Venezuela,
India and the Philippines. A comrade will report back from his recent
experience doing research in Venezuela in a community organized by an
autonomous revolutionary organizations, while two comrades from Toronto
will give us insight on the struggles led by Maoist rebel movements in
India and the Philippines. The presentation will be followed by a
discussion period.

This event is part of a Quebec-Ontario speaking tour organized by the
Revolutionary Student Movement and its counterpart in Québec, the Mouvement
Étudiant Révolutionnaire (MER-RSM). http://www.mer-rsm.com/

Indignation and a rejection of capitalist power is on the rise everywhere
in Canada. The masses are chomping at the bit for new ideas and strategies
to launch a revolution that is capable of ending the cruel and unjust
system that is poisoning our lives. Given the advanced state of
revolutionary movements elsewhere, the Canadian masses have much to learn
from foreign revolutionary struggles. This panel will present the
experiences of various revolutionary groups -particularly from Venezuela,
India, and the Phillipines- that have made significant headway in the
struggle against capitalism and successfully established a democratic,
socialist counter-power in their respective countries.

In Venezuela, the CRBZ is struggling autonomously, in a context made more
favourable to anti-capitalist forces by former President Hugo Chávez. It
has organized dozens of communes where the people are learning to govern
themselves while being at the frontlines of the resistance against fascist
paramilitary forces. Meanwhile, in India and the Philippines, revolutionary
Maoist groups have been involved for decades in a protracted armed struggle
against their respective states. In so doing, they have sown the seeds of
people’s power among the most marginalized groups in their society and
accumulated invaluable practical experience. All anti-capitalists are
invited to come learn more from and discuss the experiences of these major
revolutionary organizations and struggles.

*Time*: 1-4pm
*Location*: 40 College Street, Toronto Police Services Board
*Facebook*: https://www.facebook.com/events/209625219161747/

The Toronto Police Services Board is meeting Tuesday August 13th at 1:30pm.
Join us as we mourn the death of Sammy Yatim, Toronto's latest victim of
police brutality, and fight for justice for all victims of police violence
and murder.

The "special investigations unit" has shown a clear inability to police the
police, leaving cops in Toronto with a sense that they can get away with
anything, and leaving us with little hope for accountability from the
authorities.

Our communities are stronger, and more resilient than racist, classist
police, and together we can ensure justice and build a world without police
violence

*NO LOGGING, NO MERCURY: Noise Demo at Kathleen Wynne’s home!*

*Date*: Sunday, August 25th
*Time*: 11:30am
*Location*: Meet at Christie Pitts Park
*Facebook*: www.facebook.com/events/191513304356262/191514031022856/

Join marching bands from across North America (names TBA) for a fun-filled,
family friendly protest at Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne's home to demand
an end to unwanted logging in Grassy Narrows and real action on mercury
poisoning.

August 25, 2013. Buses depart from Christie Pits Park, at 11:30 a.m. Return
at 3:00 p.m.

*PLEASE REGISTER FOR A SPOT ON THE BUS!* http://bit.ly/GNdemoatWynne

Mercury poisoning has left its terrible mark on three generations of
Anishinaabe people – loss of balance, tremors, loss of vision, numbness,
cerebral palsy, and more. Last summer Wynne promised to do something about
this tragedy. Over a year later there has been no improvement in the lives
of Grassy Narrows people, only talk. Instead of helping the Province
continues to plan for more clearcut logging in Grassy Narrows' watershed –
a practice that further increases mercury poison levels in local fish.

No more delays, we need action now.

#nomercury #nologging #sovsummer #freegrassy
FreeGrassy.net

*What mercury poisoning? *

In the 1970s Grassy Narrows discovered fish caught in the community had
dangerous amounts of mercury that was being released in to the river from
the Dryden paper mill upstream – then ownd by Reed Paper. Today the mill is
owned by the New Domtar, a combination of Domtar and Weyerhaeuser's old
paper division.

This revelation destroyed a basic food staple – fish – and a corner stone
of the local economy. Overnight employment rates in the community went from
90% to 10%. The community was left to deal with the loss of their
traditional economy, unemployment and a mysterious new ailment that was
rampant among members of their community – mercury poisoning.

Read more here.

*How is clear cutting linked to mercury poisoning?*

Mercury from our coal power plants and incinerators rains down on the
forest and is store in the soil. When the forest is logged the mercury is
released and runs off into local lakes and rivers where it enters the food
chain as poisonous methyl mercury. Fish can have 1 million times the
mercury concentration of the water they swim in.

Read More here and here.

What are the community's demands?

Grassy Narrows, and their supporters, are demanding from government:
RESPONSIBILITY: Acknowledge mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows,
apologize, and accept responsibility to fix what was broken.
SAFETY: Fund a permanent Grassy Narrows run environmental health
monitoring center. Strengthen the Health Canada mercury safety guideline to
protect all people.
COMPENSATION: Compensate all people diagnosed by the Japanese doctors, and
retroactively index the compensation to inflation.
RESTORATION: Clean and restore the English-Wabigoon river system. Stop the
mills from polluting the water and air.
JUSTICE: Restore Grassy Narrows control over Grassy Narrows Territory. End
destructive industrial logging on Grassy Narrows Territory.

Why protest at Wynne's home?

Mercury poison hits home every day for parents in Grassy Narrows when they
struggle to feed their families, care for chronically sick children, deal
with the loss of their own vision and coordination, or search for jobs
where fishing once supported 90% of the community. They don't have the
luxury of going home and forgetting about this burden.

Wynne the Premier has not improved the lives of people in Grassy Narrows,
we are going to her home in the hopes that Wynne the mother will wake up
this tragedy.
