*1. Rebels With A Cause Film Festival*

The Rebels With A Cause Film Festival is brought to the York community by
artists and activists who seek the delicate balance between both creative
and political work. We believe that film should not pacify or be escapist,
but politicize and give us the courage to transform ourselves and our
communities. The films selected are artistic reflections on social justice
issues and critical documentations of unsung community work. Located within
a university context, Rebels engages in dialogue outside the classroom
through conversations after screenings. We hope that the communal act of
viewing and sharing our ideas about films will strengthen our community and
empower our work on York campus and beyond.

*Rebels 2nd Annual presents 5 curated programs titled Red Riot, Witness
Within, Dead Ducks, Carving Coming and Art in Action and 2 feature
screenings 5 Broken Cameras and Pariah.*

*-TODAY-*

*CARVING COMING | THU OCT 25 1:00–2:30 PM | 013 ACCOLADE EAST*
http://www.facebook.com/events/149522228525283/
*Carving Coming* consists a series of queer films that looks at the
complexity of constructing identity within multiple spaces. The shorts both
challenge and celebrate notions of being queer. Together they meditate on
inclusivity and intersectionality.

*ART IN ACTION | THU OCT 25 4:30–6:30 PM | NICK MIRKOPOULOUS SCREENING
ROOM, 004 ACCOLADE EAST*
http://www.facebook.com/events/148303878647427/
*Art in Action *depicts stories told in this city that speak to sustaining
diasporic communities, confronting profiling and stereotypes, competing
interpretations and the erasure of the past. In each short the lens filters
through how race, history and representation create the myths that surround
us.

*YOURS IN REBELLION, A CLOSING CONCERT | THU OCT 25 7:00–10:00 PM | MARTIN

*2. Rebuilding Bridges Anniversary Conference *

ReBuilding Bridges Conference
November 15th-18th, 2012
Toronto, ON.

https://www.facebook.com/events/293407270768607/

SCHEDULE + EVENT POSTERS Coming SOON!
WORKSHOPS & PANELS: Saturday November 17th and Sunday November 18th, 10
am-5 pm

Opening Concert Event/fundraiser- Thursday, November 15th- SAVE THE DATE!
Details coming soon: https://www.facebook.com/events/425473674183054

Rebuilding Bridges is a convergence of community organizers, educators,
radicals and activists from across different social movements, intent on
engaging in conversations and discussions about our political work.

We are in a time of intense uprising, social unrest and student strikes,
but our movements remain fragmented and our campaigns mostly
one-dimensional. How have our movements lost out on valuable cross-movement
collaborations in the past? What can we learn from each other?

Though we may employ different tactics or prioritize certain issues, we all
envision and work towards dismantling a system built on exploitation,
colonialism and oppression, and building a better, more just world. Let’s
start speaking and sharing with each other!

Both the Toronto and York PIRGs will be celebrating our anniversaries
through reflecting on our history of work in this city. With a mandate for
education, action and research on social and environmental justice, OPIRG
is bridging gaps everyday between different movements and campus and
community based organizing. Rebuilding Bridges is about connecting and
reconnecting movements, sharing skills and knowledge and building people
power. We are stronger when we work together towards grassroots social
change!

Please contact us at rebuildingbridgestoronto at gmail.com, if you have any
questions about the conference, accessibility needs, childcare needs,
etc. Please e-mail us to join the organizing committee or to volunteer with
Rebuilding Bridges.

*1. OCAP Funding Request*

FUNDING OCAP MONTH BY MONTH

We are again appealing to our supporters to consider becoming monthly
sustainers and to pledge a regular amount to help us cover our basic
operating costs. The context in which we are making this appeal is
being set by two factors. Firstly the impact on poor communities of
the austerity agenda of governments is increasing dramatically. Ford
is preparing for another round of municipal cuts, McGuinty is trying to
eliminate the vital community start up benefit for people on social
assistance. Harper is getting ready to all but obliterate Employment
Insurance (EI). On the other hand, this attack is producing an
increasing interest in fighting back. We are signing up new members
and taking stock of how we can organize more effectively and on a
bigger scale.

We don`t expect OCAP to ever have a surplus of resources with which to do
our organizing work but the worst aspect of our situation is always that
we don`t have enough regular funding. We greatly appreciate one time or
occasional donations but regular monthly pledges are so helpful. It takes
almost exactly $6,500 each month for us to run our office with two
organizers and an office admin person yet our monthly sustainers total
only $3,703. The rest has to be made up by scrambling for donations or
holding fundraising events periodically. If we could close that monthly
gap, it would be free up time and enable us to plan our work so much
better.

So, please consider sending in a monthly amount. You can mail in a voided
cheque, include a note saying how much you would like to give each month
and let us know if there is a particular day each month when you`d like
the money to be taken out. You can cancel the arrangement any time you
wish. A lot of people who support OCAP are themselves far from rich so we
stress that no amount is too small. Every monthly pledge helps us carry
on our work.

Thank you for any help you can give and for anything you can do to
encourage others to support us.

Send pledges to:

OCAP
7 Labatt Avenue, Unit# 209H,
Toronto, ON

*3. Greece 1940: The Antifascist struggles of yesterday. Turtle Island
2012: The necessity of struggle today. *

Greece 1940: The antifascist struggles of yesterday. Turtle Island 2012:
The necessity of struggle today.

The capitalist crisis of 2008 brought class struggle to a new level of
intensity. In Greece, the EU country most hit by the crisis, devastating
policies are imposed to large sections of society. These expose the organic
ties between neoliberalism and fascism, best seen in the meteoric rise of
Golden Dawn. A true fascist party, Golden Dawn is involved in routine acts
of violence and has recently started appearing in Greek diaspora.

Join us on Sunday the 28th, on Ohi Day, the anniversary of Greece’s entry
to World War II to:

• Learn about the actions of Greek fascists in Greece and North
America.

• Discuss different perspectives on the fascist phenomenon and its
relation to the crisis,

• Relate, compare and contrast the history and the effects of the
current capitalist crisis in Greece and North America.

*Speakers:*

• Antonis Tsopelas (Association of Greek Canadian Veterans of the
National Resistance 1941-45)
• Nikos Gryspolakis (Occupy Montreal)
• David McNally (York University)

*5. HAITI'S NEW DICTATORSHIP
**The Coup, the Earthquake, and the UN Occupation*

Book launch and public forum with author Justin Podur
  *
Thursday November 29
7:00pm
Another Story Bookshop
315 Roncesvalles Avenue*

In 1804 Haiti became the world's first independent black Republic
following a slave revolution. 200 years later, ravaged by colonialism
and violence, it was placed under UN military occupation.

Haiti's New Dictatorship charts the country's recent history, from the
2004 coup against President Aristide to the devastating 2010
earthquake, revealing a shocking story of abuse and indifference by
international forces. Podur unmasks the grim reality of a supposedly
benign international occupation, arguing that the denial of sovereignty
is the fundamental cause of Haiti's problems.

A powerful challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and
development community, *Haiti's New Dictatorship* is essential reading
for anyone concerned with justice in the global south and progressive
development policies.
*

Justin Podur *is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at York
University, Canada. He is a writer on political conflicts and social
movements, and has reported from numerous countries including the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Haiti and Israel/Palestine.
He is a contributor to *Empire's Ally: Canadian Foreign Policy and the

*6. Honouring our Communities: March Against Racism *

HONOURING OUR COMMUNITIES: MARCH AGAINST RACISM

NO HONOUR IN DEPORTATIONS | NO HONOUR IN APARTHEID | NO HONOUR IN CORPORATE
PROFIT
Sunday November 4th, 2012 at 3 PM
Rally at David Pecaut Square, March to Fairmont Royal York Hotel (100 Front
Street)

Jason Kenney is being awarded an ‘honorary’ degree by Israel's Haifa
University at a fundraiser supported by Stephen Harper, Ezra Levant, Peter
Munk, Stockwell Day and others. This event is a celebration of war, racism,
corporate profit, displacement, apartheid and anti-migrant xenophobia – all
intensified by the Conservative Party of Canada’s agenda. There is nothing
honorable about this gathering.

We call on our communities to gather in/to honour of our strength and
resilience, in opposition to this award and gathering, and against the
dishonorable acts of Kenney, Harper and their allies

Join us on November 4th !
#confrontkenney #nohonour

Childcare and ASL will be available.

*October 29, November 12 – 5:30 –7:00pm at 322, the Student Centre*

'We are a group of self-identified, proud, fat women and trans people who
are tired of being told that we are too much-- too unhealthy, too lazy, too
jolly-- or that we need to be ashamed of our bodies. We are committed
to raising awareness about the harm that body fascism causes our
communities and
people of all sizes. We'll discuss strategies for coping with fatphobia
and other intersecting oppressions, strategize against the fatphobia that
pervades
the campus environment and celebrate our beautiful bodies.'

*Please note, this group is for self-identified fat people only.

*10. **Anti-Violence Quilt Making*

* October 31, 2012
12 – 2pm
At the Centre for Women and Trans People at York, room 322 Student Centre*

Enraged about the sexual harassment and assaults that have been happening
on campus and in the larger community? Exhausted by daily experiences of
transphobia? Want an outlet?

At CWTP, we believe that art is an important tool to resist violence. We
are working on a quilt to re-imagine what a world without violence could
look
like. Get crafty on Halloween and create your very own quilt square!
The squares will be sewn together and displayed at the Centre, as our
collective
anti-violence vision.

Snacks and art supplies will be provided. You don’t have to be an artist to
come! We can help each other draw, embroider, bead and glue.

Can’t make it? Didn’t quite finish your art work? No problem, we’ll be
having another quilt making date on *Wednesday November 7, 1-3pm. Save the
date!*

*11. **The Nail Salon: The Conflict Edition*
*
*
* Wednesday October 31, 2012
2:30 – 4:30pm
Centre for Women and Trans People at York
Room 322 of the Student Centre*

It happens in all of our relationships. Sometimes we avoid it, sometimes
we dive right into it, and most of us need more skills in how to work
through it.
Let’s talk about conflict! What is your reaction when conflict pops up?
When we’re hurt/angry/disappointed by our friends or fam, why is it so
difficult to
talk about? How can we take care of ourselves while trying to work through
it? What happens if it doesn’t get resolved? Let’s share strategies while
getting
our nails done.

Bring your stories, lunch and nail art skills! Halloween nail decals anyone?
---
Nail Salons are a fun way to learn about a particular anti-oppression
topic while getting our nails done by each other. This is not a workshop,
but a
skill share – we will share strategies on how to fight oppression,
build skills in healthier relationships and learn how to make our nails
fabulous.
Nail polish and remover will be provided. Please bring your lunch.

The discussion will be facilitated by Arti (who is CWTP staff) and
CWTP volunteers.

Nail Salons happen twice a month at the Centre. Are you interested in
a particular topic focused on anti-oppression? Email articwtp at gmail.com with
your ideas.

* Save the date: *Next nail salon is on November 14th, 1-3pm!
