*2. Honouring our Communities: March Against Racism Report Back (from
November 4th)*
*
*
*Kenney gala disrupted, communities honoured, relationships strengthened *

issue that we need to honour as people striving for social justice and

Over 400 protestors took to the streets of Toronto Sunday night gathering
outside Toronto's Royal York Hotel. Inside, Israel's
apartheid institution Haifa University supported by Stephen Harper, Peter
Munk, Ezra Levant and others had organized a ceremony to give Immigration
Minister Jason Kenney an honorary degree.

The demonstration occupied the intersection at Front and York blocking the
main traffic artery going into the Hotel. When the police and security
tried to sneak in the Tory elite into the hotel from the valet entrance on
the east side of Front, half of us split off from the main march and shut
that entrance off too. A small community celebration was organized at each
of the entrances and the stories of Harriet Nahanee, Jan Szamko, Veronica
Castro, Ned Peart, Adolfo Ich and Gabi Baramki were shared and remembered
as protestors raised their red carnations and declared 'We Honour!' (See
their stories by clicking the tumblr link above).

The sound of drums kept our spirits high as flags and banners for Palestine
solidarity, against austerity, against racism, and for migrant justice
fluttered in the bright, cold day. We received word that there were some
fancy cars pulling into a parking lot on Wellington street and a large
group of people left the valet entrance on the east side of Front, and ran
around the hotel blocking that entrance too. Conservatives and Zionist
supporters who thought they had it all figured out, were furious at being
foiled and forced to continue driving in circles.

Behind the Royal York Hotel is an alley that for most of the night had
allowed the racist pro-Kenney, pro-apartheid supporters a bit of cover. As
we blocked the parking lot on Wellington street, we saw an opening into the
alley and rushed in leaving both the police and hotel security scratching
their heads. At this point, every entrance to the hotel had been disrupted
or blocked while a sizable contingent had held down the initial stand-off
at Front & York. As the clock ticked to 6:30pm, the official time for the
dinner to start, we began to march in a circle around the Royal York with
all four of the break-off contingents joining up for the victory lap around
the building, a stark reminder of Canada's colonial past and present.

As we returned to the main entrance, we heard stories of two disruptions
that had been quietly planned and executed inside on the floor where the
celebrations were taking place. A group of medical professionals had
dropped banners against cuts to refugee health and Bill C-31, and Jewish
anti-Zionists had dropped banners insisting that Kenney dishonours the
holocaust.

A fiery closing speech highlighted how we had come together and formed new
relationships, and strengthened old ones. Forty three organizations
endorsed this protest, and hundreds of people came to build bridges between
our many struggles against racism, colonization and capitalism and in
support of justice and dignity for all our communities.

We had set out with two simple goals for our demonstration on November 4th:
disrupt the proceedings and honour our communities. We are glad to report
that we succeeded in doing both. Now, onwards!

and ideas that were discussed during OPIRG's Tar Sands workshop in October (
https://www.facebook.com/events/433316643397603/).

The meeting will provide information on ways to get involved with tar sands
and line 9 organizing and empower participants to take action, as well as
to come up with action plans around this, on work that we can be doing
around this at York University.

After the meeting, we will go on a walk to visit the Line 9 site, that is

*5. **PROTEST CHINA'S TAKEOVER OF NEXEN! STAND UP FOR TIBET!

*Date*: November 7, 2012
*Time*: 10am
*Location*: 151 Yonge St

Last week we had a loud and effective protest against selling Nexen to
China in front of the Foreign Affairs office, and it was clear that the
Canadian public supported us. The Harper government wants to extend the
review period for this deal. This is the chance to make our voices heard!
Together we can help stop this deal from happening!

Join us on November 7, 2012, at 151 Yonge St, as we continue our protest
against the deal between Canadian oil giant Nexen and China National
Offshore Oil Company.

China

National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), a state-owned Chinese corporation,
has a proven record of funding nomad resettlement in Tibet. Let us show
them we can't have a company operating here that blatantly funds the
destruction of Tibetan livelihoods!

TAKE ACTION NOW!

1. Send a letter to Harper to oppose this deal!
https://secure3.convio.net/sft/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=895

2. Send a letter to your MP and urge him/her to speak out against this deal
and in support of Tibet. Call your Member of Parliament’s office to follow
up.

(Sample letter: bit.ly/UpIJKL)

(List of MPs: bitly.com/qrLMdH)

3. Not in Toronto? Create your own action(s) and take action in your own
campus/community/area.

http://www.sft-canada.org/harper-dont-sell-nexen-out-to-china-stand-up-for-tibet/

Tibetans are dying for freedom. They are setting their own bodies on fire
to oppose China’s occupation of their country. Canada must be part of the
solution in Tibet, not exacerbate the problem. Oppose this deal with China
and STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH TIBETANS TODAY.

*7. Stop Racial Profiling! – Stop Racist Policing! *

On November 14, 2012, join us as we speak out against the continued racial
profiling and racist policing directed at affected communities here in
Toronto.

Our struggles to be free from racist police harassment and unconstitutional
violations of our rights has resulted in many studies and much talk, but in
the neighbourhoods, nothing has changed – police still harass, intimidate,
illegally search, arrest, and brutalize the people, and especially Black
and racialized youth. The Toronto Police Services Board's words have
proved empty and hollow, and the "new way of doing business" looks exactly
like the old one.

>From TAVIS to Form 208 cards, the security they talk about doesn’t mean
safety for us. It’s time to find real solutions to neighbourhood problems!

On November 14, 2012, join us in saying – enough is enough!

No more illegal detentions and searches!

Stop racial profiling and racist policing!

Speak out in front of 40 College Street before the Toronto Police Services
Board meeting on November 14, from 1230PM -130PM

*Event endorsed by:* Justice IS NOT Colour-Blind Campaign, Law Union of
Ontario, Rights Watch Network, Network for Pan-African Solidarity, Nation
of Islam (Toronto), the office of Jagmeet Singh, and OPIRG York

*8. **Save the School House Shelter **Defend the Downtown East!*

*Wednesday, November 14th
9am
Moss Park (Queen and Sherbourne)
*Free Breakfast, Rally and March*

On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/events/289020987881979/?context=create

In June, the City of Toronto's 'Community Development and Recreation
Committee', including local councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, voted to close
down the School House on George St, a 55 bed men's harm reduction shelter.
On Wednesday, November 14th the issue of the School House Shelter will be
brought back to City Hall for a final report on how the money that should
be spent keeping the shelter open, will instead be re-shuffled in the
system.

In the mean-time, all shelters remain overcrowded, harm reduction
programming is scarce, the Provincial cut to Community Start-Up will throw
more people on to the streets, and winter is about to set in.

The closing of the School House is a gateway for the re-development and
gentrification of the entire Downtown East. On George St alone,
politicians and slumlords have let buildings that should have been
converted to affordable housing long ago, instead sit empty and catch
fire. They talk about 'cleaning up the neighborhood' but instead of
building housing, keeping shelters open, and providing more and better
services, they cut services, reduce shelter beds, and blame the poor. They
talk about 'mixed income' neighborhoods, and yet no one looks at mixing up
Rosedale, only the Downtown East is the target.

We can not let this shelter be closed, and we will not let poor people be
pushed and priced out of the Downtown East. OCAP has said from the
beginning that we will not simply watch the School House be cleared or sit
empty while people die on the streets. We have brought our community
together to fight for this space, and on November 14th we are not backing
down.

*Next Downtown East Community Meeting

Wednesday, November 7th

Join us for our next Downtown East public community meeting to talk about
the School House, the history of the Downtown East, and resistance in the
neighborhood to upscale development. Food and tokens provided.

*9. Re-launch of "Conversation Starters" - Jane and Finch / Black Creek
neighbourhood meeting*

Greetings to all of our colleagues,

As some of you may remember, we launched "CONVERSATION STARTERS" last year
for all employees, students and volunteers working for various non-profit
community-based organizations in Jane and Finch and broader Black Creek
neighborhoods. Our hope was to create opportunities in a safe and
welcoming environment to engage in thought-provoking dialogue about issues
of social and economic justice, particularly those affecting the workers
and the residents we work with in the community.

Unfortunately, due to some unanticipated circumstances, the organizations
that were coordinating this initiative could not follow through with it
after a few successful gatherings. While we owe all of our colleagues a big
apology, we are pleased to announce that the “Conversation Starters” is now
ready for a re-launch. Depending on your response, we will host these
sessions on a monthly basis.

We invite you to join us for the re-launch of “Conversation Starters” on
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:30 P.M. at BLACK CREEK COMMUNITY
HEALTH CENTRE – 2nd FLOOR, YORKGATE MALL. Lunch will be provided.

The proposed topics of discussion for November 9th are:

Re-politicizing of our community work OR the “Right and Dignity at Work”
campaign

We will also collectively explore future topics to be discussed.

*10. Anti War Coalition Meeting*

November 6
6-8 p.m.
313 Student Centre

This coalition hopes to build the anti war movement at York and continue
the work that many others are doing on this campus to organize against and
resist foreign invasions, sanctions, occupations and war. This is working
off the Drop Fees not Bombs movement advocating for government funding
going to education and social services rather than for military spending.

*11. Mahjoub: An end in sight?*
*Update and Call to Action from the Justice for Mahjoub Network*

Mr. Mahjoub's long struggle for justice and freedom is once again entering
a critical phase. Much will take place over the next few months and the
Justice for Mahjoub Network is calling for support actions across the
country. Please read and forward and let us know how you can support.

This past September, public pressure and Mr. Mahjoub's lawyers succeeded in
turning the court into a veritable trial of Canadian officials implicated
in security certificate cases. First, Stockwell Day, who signed the
certificate against Mr. Mahjoub and four others, was forced to testify
about his knowledge of the use of torture information in the case. Next,
and thanks to the courage of the Egyptian people who overthrew the Mubarak
regime, Egyptian human rights lawyer Magdy Salem was able to show up the
fallaciousness of the blood-soaked information that Canadian officials have
relied on to persecute Mr. Mahjoub these twelve long years.

Now, over the next months, Mr. Mahjoub's lawyers will argue that the court
should finally throw out the manifestly unreasonable security certificate
against Mr. Mahjoub. At the same time, the Justice for Mahjoub Network will
be working to mobilize public support for Mr. Mahjoub, whose struggle is
not for himself alone, but for all Muslims and Arabs who have been
targetted in the so-called war on terror, and for all migrants who are
subject to arbitrary, indefinite detention in Canada.

Here are our plans (*we need your support*!):
*
NOVEMBER: TURNING THE TABLES*

On facebook: http://www.facebook.com/events/548613898489453/
In November, our focus will be on holding government officials accountable
for all the crimes committed against Mr. Mahjoub, as one of many Canadian
victims of the "war on terror". In court, through the media, and on the
streets, we'll be exposing the myriad abuses - racial profiling, use of
torture-obtained information, destroyed evidence, breach of
solicitor-client privilege, stealing defence documents, more - that have
marked Mr. Mahjoub's 12-year case and insisting that those responsible be
held accountable. We demand an end to Islamophobic and racist immigration
and security laws in the war of terror against people of colour and Muslims.

-- Put some time aside on 19 November to respond to a call for action that
will come out that day!

-- If you are in Toronto, please sign up for a shift of court solidarity
the week of 19 to 22 November:
www.doodle.com/i2z8tqgnitmeaayq

*DECEMBER: FREE MAHJOUB, FREE THE THREE, FREEDOM FOR MIGRANTS, END
DETENTIONS*

In December, our focus will turn to the indefinite, arbitrary detention of
Mohammad Mahjoub, the other two security certificate detainees Mohamed
Harkat and Mahmoud Jaballah, and more generally of refugees and immigrants
in Canada. With the full implementation of Bill C-31 in December, and with
C-43 being pushed forward, increasing numbers of migrants will find
themselves behind bars in Canada. December 10th marks the *10th year
anniversary* of the arrest of Mohamed Harkat (www.justiceforharkat.com).
Mahjoub will also be in court that day in Toronto for a detention review,
once again calling on the judge to free him from over twelve years of
arbitrary, indefinite detention. And it is International Human Rights Day!

-- *In Toronto*, Mr. Mahjoub will lead a rally outside the Immigration
Detention Centre on 9 December (details to come). We are encouraging people
from across Southern Ontario to join us. To get involved in organizing it,
please email justiceformahjoub at gmail.com.

-- *We are calling for a pan-Canadian day of action against immigration
detention on or around 10 December.* If you can organize a workshop,
info-picket or action in your community, please email us at
justiceformahjoub at gmail.com: we can provide flyers, media release, and
other support.

-- If you are in or near Toronto, please sign up for a shift of court
solidarity on 10 and 11 December:
www.doodle.com/y7y99qmewa84w3sp <http://doodle.com/y7y99qmewa84w3sp>
*
FEBRUARY: CROSS-CANADA SPEAKING TOUR (LOCAL ENGAGEMENTS IN NOV & DEC)*

In November and December, Mr. Mahjoub is available to speak in classrooms
in the Toronto area, while in February, he plans to embark on a
cross-Canada speaking tour. Since he began speaking out last May, his talks
about his experiences in prison have moved audiences to tears and brought
people to their feet in standing ovations. Speaking out is a way of holding
the government accountable for their actions, breaking the silence about
the oppression of Muslims, Arabs and migrants in Canada and fighting
against the injustice of immigration detention.

v. Canada" panel

-- If you are interested in hosting a speaking event in November, December
or February, please contact us at justiceformahjoub at gmail.com.

We very much look forward to be in touch with you in the next crucial
months. *Please join our mailing list by emailing

*14. G.E.'s Uranium Secret- West-Toronto Meeting*

Did you know that GE Hitachi has a Uranium processing factory at Lansdowne
& Dupont in Toronto??

Not many of us did, but now we do, we are very concerned.

This will not be a NIMBY issue but based on the right to say "NO" and find
environmental justice for Toronto's West-End residents and all the people
impacted along the nuclear fuel cycle from Uranium mining and proposed
uranium mines, to refining and processing, to burning in reactors, to
storage of hazardous high level nuclear waste, and atomic weapons
proliferation, and radiation exposure all along the way!

You're invited to a community meeting to learn more on Thur. Nov, 15th, at
1900 Davenport-Perth Community Center. All welcome. Free. Everyone deserves
their Erin Brockovich moment!

Tentative and growing speakers list:

- Amanda Lickers from Peterborough ABC on Health Impacts
- Angela Bischoff, Ontario Clean Air Alliance as moderator
- Parents from the Prince of Wales School Community Peterborough
- Legal Counsel from the Canadian Environmental Law Association
- Parents from the Junction Triangle

MP Andrew Cash and MPP Jonah Schein are both committed to attending.

The game plan:
5:30-6 pm Meet outside GE for a group meet and greet and location
identification (1025 Lansdowne)
6:30 pm Walk from GE to 1900 Davenport (on the walk people can talk and get
to know each other - we're in this together)
7 pm Forum at 1900 Davenport
8:45-9:15 pm March back to GE, do "toxic tour"
10:00-11:00pm for the hardcore, meet at the Coffee Time at Lansdowne and
Dupont to discuss strategy and further action

*16. Miss Representation Screening*

November 14
6-9
Chancellor's Room

This film looks at the representation of women in the media and politics.
It critically looks at how the image of women that is perpetuated through
popular culture and the media affects young women and the implications of a
culture that values women simply for looks. A discussion to follow the film
will hopefully allow us to delve deeper into the issues presented and even
some that might not have been included in the film.
