From ldxar1 at tesco.net Wed Jan 10 14:59:45 2007 From: ldxar1 at tesco.net (Andy) Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 22:59:45 -0000 Subject: [Onthebarricades] Fw: [BlackGreen)] continuing police campaign against g20 protests Message-ID: <00a701c7350b$05851a70$0202a8c0@andy1> forward from melbourne.indymedia.org continuing police campaign against g20 protestors by a Wednesday January 10, 2007 at 06:04 PM Arrests continue in the wake of the g20 protests last November. These arrests are political, and require a political campaign in response. People who are or who know someone who feels at risk during this time should think carefully about their safety, and take appropriate steps to the extent they can to support themselves and each other. In the wake of the g20 protests last November, the police campaign against protestors continues, with the most recent arrests occurring in the past few days. It seems likely that police are tapping phones and using other surveillance techniques to track suspects. A permanent team of police officers has been assembled to go through countless hours of footage and photographs from the weekend actions. A number of people have also been "dobbed in", most likely through mainstream media anti-protestor campaigns. Arrests have occurred at random times, most often at suspects' homes, but occasionally elsewhere such as outside a courtroom. Plainclothes police have been sent to search houses, confiscating clothes, shoes and jewellry or other accessories that people were allegedly wearing on the day, stickers (??), diaries, computers, cameras, other media devices and files, and so on. Yesterday, a friend's house was raided in relation to the arrest of one alleged protestor. People have been held in custody for anywhere from one or two hours to a couple of days. Police are taking people's photographs, fingerprints, and so on, and often confiscating mobile phones. Charges are generally along the lines of riot, affray, criminal damage, inciting others, endangering others, occasionally theft. Bail conditions include not being able to speak to the co-accused - though this has been successfully challenged by a number of people - reporting up to 3 times a week, not being able to leave victoria. There are a number of points to make sure you or your friends keep in mind during this time: - consider what items you may have in your homes or cars - consider what you speak about via the phone or on the internet - keep in contact with friends - visit http://www.activistrights.org and http://www.stopg20.org and ensure you are aware of your legal rights - a central defence and solidarity line has been set up as a point of contact for people who have been arrested, know someone arrested, or otherwise have information about a number of things. This number is a contact for a number of things: +assistance with obtaining legal representation and advice +getting involved in/information about a wider political campaign around the arrests +organising fundraising events +support and solidarity - a blog has also been set up to explore reflections on and ideas coming from g20 actions, and also to act as a centre for updates on what is going on with arrests and so on. The address is arushandapush.blogsome.com. - there is a need to start fundraising for legal fees, bail payments, and potential fines. You can find details about where to send/deposit funds raised on the above listed blog. This campaign of arrests and scare tactics is part of a broader attempt to take attention away from the g20 itself, and from the neoliberal regime that the institution is a part of. Demonising a certain form of protest serves to contain protest into a form that can be easily maintained and subsequently ignored and forgotten. By focusing attention onto so-called "protestor violence" - property damage that in no way compares to the violence supported by ANZ in Iraq; to the damage to the environment, to the inequality, to the food insecurity, to the infringement on civil rights, to the lack of justice, to the danger to people's lives, that flow from the policies developed in forums such as the g20; to the police violence against actual individual people over the weekend at the car action on the saturday night, at the museum on sunday, during the ensuing snatch squad arrests; to police and state violence in countless other areas and forums, like Palm Island, where a policeman murdered an indigenous man. These arrests are political, and should be responded to as such, with a broad political campaign. At the same time, people need to be careful and stay mindful of their own safety, and the safety of people that they know who may be at risk. We need to support each other through this, and step up the struggle - we need to fight our fear, and learn not to be afraid. In solidarity. -- the ankle bone, connected to the thigh bone ;) http://www.aut-op-sy.org http://narconews.com http://www.eco.utexas.edu/~archive/chiapas95/ http://noborder.org http://slash.interactivist.net/ http://ainfos.ca http://www.metamute.org http://lists.perthimc.asn.au/pipermail/blackgreensolidarity/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precarity http://www.metamute.org/en/Precarious-Reader https://lists.resist.ca/pipermail/ipsm-l/2005-July/000781.html http://www.deletetheborder.org http://www.nettime.org http://www.pochanostra.com/dialogues/ http://www.aspaceoutside.org/wp-content/uploads/Space_Outside_Reader.pdf http://www.prol-position.net/ http://stateofemergency.nomasters.org/ http://www.infoshop.org/inews http://www.eco-action.org/dod http://www.16beavergroup.org/drift/overview.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ BlackGreenSolidarity mailing list BlackGreenSolidarity at lists.perthimc.asn.au http://lists.perthimc.asn.au/mailman/listinfo/blackgreensolidarity -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The demo was attacked by special motorbike forces (Z team) on the way back from Nikea hospital where there had been a solidarity gathering for two of the imprisoned comrades Tarasio Zadorozni and Gerasimos Kiriakopulos who are on hungerstrike. The anti riot police squads (MAT) then stormed the comrades on the ground, 42 were taken into custody at the national security police headquarters in Athens, many of them injured, and 4 of them are still being held 9 hours later. Tarasio Zadorozni and Gerasimos Kiriakopulos have been on hunger strike for 46 and 28 days respectively and were transferred from Koridalos prison to a secure unit in Nikea hospital on January 9 as their condition had deteriorated. They have been held in prison since May 6 2006 along with another demonstrator, Kostas Kachadouras, accused of rioting during the international antiwar demo of the European Social Forum in Athens. The imprisoned demonstrators of May 6 are 3 of the thousands of people that took to the streets that day when riots erupted between the forces of repression and anarchists and young rebels and attacks were made against State and capitalist targets. The police arrested 17 demonstrators who were accused on trumped up heavy charges and 3 of them have been held in prison awaiting trial without any evidence against them (with the political consent of the traditional leftist parties and groups) so that they can be punished as an example for those who choose to resist without mediation or institutional representation. The struggle that those on hunger strike began for their freedom, using their body as a weapon, has now become the terrain where a general conflict between the State and those who fight it is being expressed. It is about an attack in which the State, using all the repressive mechanisms of propaganda and control in its power, is attempting to isolate and eliminate anarchists and anti-authoritarians, who are the most radical part of social resistance, with the surrender of the whole of society as its final objective. Under these conditions of intensifying State terror, every action of solidarity to the imprisoned fighters has been under attack. The aim of this repression is not only to keep the 3 in prison as long as possible, it is also to eliminate the very dynamic of solidarity, self-organisation and resistance against the plans of the State and the bosses. So, on January 12, the police attempted to prevent the solidarity demonstration that had been organised by anarchists and anti-authoritarians. The order was pronounced by the chief of police forces present, stating that he had instructions from the prosecutor, but this was subverted by the persistence of the demonstrators and finally a strong demo was held in the centre of Athens. The attack on today's demonstration (January 13), with the arrests and the wounded, are the peak of this repressive violence, showing the State's intent to bury the struggle of those on hunger strike in silence, to terrorise those in solidarity and attack the development of the anarchist struggle. What has preceded today's events: the arrest of an anti-authoritarian comrade outside his home following the motorbike demo to the house of the minister of justice; intensive provocation and pressure by the Z motorbike police squad on another motorbike demo to Koridalos prison on December 15; police attack on new year's eve motorbike demo on its return from the prison that resulted in many comrades being taken into custody and one arrest, and on January 9 the surrounding by anti riot police squads of a radio station which had been occupied by 50 anarchists to transmit solidarity messages and news of the hunger strike. AGAINST the attempts of the State to isolate the struggle of our imprisoned comrades who are on hunger strike behind a wall of silence AGAINST the constant repressive attacks against anarchists and antiauthoritarians, aiming at their isolation and annihilation AGAINST the attempt to impose social acquiescance WE ARE TAKING OVER THE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS AND WE DEMAND THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF OUR 4 COMRADES BEING HELD IN THE NATIONAL SECURITY BUILDING FOLLOWING TODAY'S ATTACK BY POLICE AGAINST THE SOLIDARITY MOTORBIKE DEMO AND THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF THE IMPRISONED PROTESTORS OF MAY 6 2006 By taking over this university building we are creating a place of constant counterinformation and solidarity within our city, an attempt that is operating horizontally and against all hierarchy, on the basis of the occupiers' general assembly. Spanish slaughterhouse fire causes ?3.3 million damage A slaughterhouse in Santa Comba (Galicia), Spain has been the target of a fire attack that is believed to have been carried out by the Spanish ALF. The fire, which happened on Thursday, 11th January, has left the slaughterhouse in a severe state of damage, rendering it unable to resume operations for at least six months. The attack is thought to have occured during the very early morning hours. Sources say that, prior to setting the fire, doors were propped open with tape to allow animals destined for slaughter to escape. 160 cows were liberated. The fire was specifically aimed at the killing floor, refrigeration units where the carcasses of 250 cows and 64 pigs were stored, and two transport trucks, one of which was a costly 15 ton vehicle. As first responders rushed to help stop the blaze from reaching the roof and vehicles, several fire extinguishers were also found to have been emptied prior to the fire. No communiqu? has as yet been sent and no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility. Police and forensic investigators currently have few leads, but they do believe the action was carried out by people who were familiar with the property and buildings. "The fact that the intruders propped doors open with tape to allow live animals to escape while they simultaneously set fire to key areas of the property is definite proof that they knew the place well," stated a police spokesperson. Business owner Jes?s P?rez has asked the town council for financial assistance for the slaughterhouse's 35 workers. The slaughterhouse is considered to be of great importance to the region. The damage to the building, refrigeration units, and vehicles is estimated to be ?5,000,000 (?3,298,256). Necessary repairs to restore normal operations will most likely take at least 6 months. None of the 160 liberated cows has yet been recovered, and it is unclear whether the 35 workers will receive compensation during the six month repair period. Watson said: "Until those police officers who have been found to commit criminal actions against Aboriginal people are dealt with by due process more Aurukuns are inevitable." The Socialist Alliance spokesperson was commenting on the latest explosion of Aboriginal rage, at the Cape York community of Aurukun. The flare-up was caused by rumours that an Aboriginal man had been assaulted while in police custody. Watson stressed: "Any police officer involved in that unlawful assault needs to be identified and suspended, and charges laid. We have this extreme situation where a police officer actually fired a privately owned rifle at the crowd of people who were confronting the police station." The Aboriginal leader said that Aurukun Aboriginal elders were now working with the community to stabilise matters and to ensure that there are no dangers of any other flare-ups. "On the other hand", Watson added, "what is now starting to emerge is the fact that there is substantial forensic material available that supports the Aboriginal man's claims that he was grievously assaulted whilst in custody. There are senior Aboriginal people coming forward now with material clearly supporting the man's allegations." Watson demanded a thorough independent inquiry into the Aurukun protest and the behaviour of the police. This was more necessary than ever after the "shame of Palm Island". "There we have a brother (Mulrunji) who has been buried long since and we still have the police officer who is responsible for that unlawful killing walking around Surfers Paradise scot free", Watson said. "And yet Aboriginal people who rose up in justifiable anger have since been charged, convicted and sent to jail for allegedly damaging public property! "You can always replace bricks and mortar but we have a man who met his death by an unlawful assault administered by a serving member of the police force. And the deputy coroner found that senior sergeant Chis Hurley bashed Mulrunji to death on the floor of the Palm Island watch house." Watson stressed that "a culture of ongoing genocide that began with Day One of the white invasion back in 1788" continues to this day in the police. To many police officers the blue uniform is just a licence to bash, terrorise and, if need be, kill Aboriginal people." Watson commented that the challenge was to break the influence of the Queensland Police Union, which continues to determine the agenda on Aboriginal deaths in custody. As we know from the Fitzgerald Inquiry and numerous other inquiries and investigations there are a number of issues to do with the way the QPU conducts its business. The people of Queensland should be very concerned about what is happening now." But Watson also stressed that police immunity is not just a Queensland issue. "February 14 is the third anniversary of the death of T.J. Hickey in Redfern. As we saw from the investigations into TJ's death key police officers at the scene were not required to give evidence. The coronial inquest was corrupted and did not deliver any real or positive results for the Hickey family or the community. "That coronial inquest must be re-opened. All police officers with knowledge of the events that day must be called before the court and they must answer for what they did." Watson concluded with the undertaking that Aboriginal people and their non-Indigenous supporters would continue their protest action until justice for Aboriginal people is won. "We stand squarely behind the line that has been drawn in the sand with the blood of Mulrunji. We are going to stand behind that line and defend it. "We will continue to fight for justice because unless we can force the Queensland government and judicial system to place a very real value on the life of our brother then the life of an Aboriginal person on Australian soil hasn't any value at all." *FOR MORE INFORMATION: 0401 227 443 (Sam Watson) 0410 629 088 (Paul Benedek)* __._,_.___ Messages in this topic () Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Change settings via the Web (Yahoo!
