But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy - because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion. Bryan Killian says that he follows the Pastafarian religion, and that as a crucial part of his faith, he must wear 'full pirate regalia' as prescribed in the holy texts of Pastafarianism. The school, however, say that his pirate garb was disruptive. Pastafarians follow the Flying Spaghetti Monster (pictured), and believe that the world was created by the touch of his noodly appendage. Furthermore, they acknowledge pirates as being 'absolute divine beings', and stress that the worldwide decline in the number of pirates has directly led to global warming. Pirates of the Carribbean A man in full pirate regalia Pastafarianism gained wide attention when its key prophet, Bobby Henderson, wrote to the Kansas School Board during the height of the controversy over 'Intelligent Design' being taught in science classes. His letter, also published on his website , demanded equal time be given to the teachings of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as was given to ID and evolutionary theory. Since then, the Flying Spaghetti Monster has gained countless followers worldwide, although there are those who remain spagnostic. The school, in North Buncombe, North Carolina, remains adamant that their decision to suspend Killian for a day has nothing to do with his religion, and quite a lot to do with his repeated refusal to heed warnings against wearing pirate outfits. -- http://old.punx.com/ anti-racist-action fight fascism, racism, sexism and homophobia http://www.antiracistaction.com/ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Since 31st March 2007, over 10,000 workers from 39 Bhattas are on strike in Neshero Feroz. They are demanding higher wages, an end to bonded labour and registration of the Bhattas and hence social security cards for the workers. Led by Pakistan Bhatta Mazdoor Union, the workers have set up strike camp at Nesher Feroz city. The bosses have so for not responded positively. Today on 3rd April, the bosses have threatened the main leaders of the union including Younas Raho central president of the union. Younas Rahu is a resident of Moro which in district Neshero Feroz. He is ling time trade union activist and was elected national president of the Bhatta Mazdfoor Union two years earlier. He is also secretary Labour Party Pakistan Sindh chapter. Younas rahu told me today on telephone that it is a solid strike and may be it is the first experience of the workers to go on this strike for four days already. There is no work on any of the Bhattas in the district; it is estimate that over 10,000 workers are taking part in the strike. Younas Rahu said that the workers are demanding that their wages should be increased from 190-200 Rupees for making 1000 bricks to Rupees 350. They are demanding an immediate implementation of the bonded labour abolition act 1992. The bonded labour still continues in the district despite all the decisions of the courts and government against it. The Peshgi system makes most of the workers bonded and they can not leave the Bhatta until they pay the Peshgi. Pakistan Bhata Mazdoor Union has also led a national strike during April 2006 in most part of Pakistan making the Peshgi a national issue. The union need your help, please send letter of protest to the Sind government. They called for the establishment of a truly democratic government through free and fair elections. The dispute was sparked on March 9 when Musharraf suspended Chaudhry. The lawyers will remain undaunted against the "black acts" of the rulers, while waging a struggle for the rule of law and for the supremacy of the constitution, Ahsan Bhoon, president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, told the "black coats" after their lunchtime march through the city mall. "No more victimisation by the government will be tolerated as the whole nation has been awakened", Bhoon told the rally, according to the March 22 English-language daily The Nation. The lawyers had expressed their determination during a sit-in, after marching through the streets chanting anti-government slogans. The authorities largely held back from attacking the protesters this time, following widespread criticism of police repression of a March 17 demonstration. On that occasion, police fired tear gas shells into the crowd and used batons to beat lawyers and journalists. Lawyers have continued to stage walk-outs from their court duties, and members of the Save the Judiciary Committee have carried out a hunger strike in support of their demands, as the campaign escalates in cities across Pakistan. In Islamabad, lawyers marched to the Supreme Court building to protest the charges against Chaudhry, despite police barricading streets all around the court precinct. In Quetta, police fired tear gas and baton-charged the protesters, injuring several lawyers. Some of the lawyers burned their black coats in protest. Political parties, including members of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Muslim-based Muttahida Majlesi Amal (MMA), held separate rallies in support of the demands of the lawyers. Police had arrested more than 250 opposition party activists in early morning raids in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to prevent them joining the protests in front of the the Supreme Court in the capital. In a joint statement on March 21, United Nations representatives Leandro Despouy and Hina Jilani called on Pakistani authorities to remedy the situation, according to a report in the March 22 edition of The Nation. "Demonstrators, including lawyers, journalists, political activists and civil society actors, have taken to the streets since March 12 to protest against this presidential decision, which is broadly seen as an attack against the independence of the judiciary. "Law enforcement authorities, in some instances, have used force in an excessive manner against peaceful demonstrators, and have arrested several of them. Also, journalists were physically hindered from reporting on the events." Further rallies were held in cities all around Pakistan on March 26, calling for the reinstatement of Chaudry and the removal of Musharraf from office. The major rallies, organised by the ARD, also demanded that an independent Chief Election Commission be constituted, under the supervision of an impartial person, to hold general elections under a caretaker government. The leaders of the ARD vowed to fight for the independence of the judiciary, the restoration of real democracy and the supremacy of parliament. The main parties involved in the ARD are the PPP and the Muslim League-Nawaz League. Other opposition parties including the MMA supported the rallies. In Lahore, some 5000 people marched in separate contingents to the High Court building, despite police hindrance and harassment. Carrying party flags and chanting anti-Musharraf slogans, they converged on the court, where they were greeted by a large number of black-coated advocates (lawyers). The Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) held separate marches in 11 cities, which linked up with the main rallies in the major centres. In both Lahore and Karachi, several hundred LPP supporters staged militant protest marches, carrying red flags, in the face of police harassment. Karachi marchers carried portraits of Latin American revolutionary leader Che Guevara, and demanded an end to the present "rotten system", according to the March 27 Nation. All the rallies proceeded despite severe state repression, including mass arrests of party workers on the day before the protests. Punjab PPP general secretary Chaudry Ghulam Abbas told the March 27 Daily Dawn newspaper that police had arrested about 1000 workers from all around the state of Punjab, although almost all of them had been released by the evening of March 26. In Peshawar, leaders of various secular and religious parties, speaking at a joint public meeting on March 26, stressed the need for launching a "decisive and concerted movement against military rulers and their hand-picked corrupt politicians to rid the country of lawlessness, corruption and poverty", according to the March 27 Daily Dawn. The next major mobilisation is scheduled for April 3, to coincide with Chaudhry's appearance before the High Court to answer trumped-up charges of misuse of office resources. It is widely viewed that Chaudhry is really being charged for standing up to the Musharraf regime, threatening to challenge any attempt to hold fraudulent elections later this year, and for foreshadowing an exposure of the government's corrupt privatisation of the Habib Bank. Two days protest camps were established at Lahore and Karachi. Hundreds of political activists visited the camps and showed their solidarity with the movement of the advocates for democracy and justice. At Lahore, LPP activists put up the protest camp at Shimla Pehari Chouck from 10am to 6pm. Red flags and new poster of LPP in support of the advocates attracted many to the camp. A leaflet explaining LPP position on the movement was distributed all around the area. Many media person also took photographs and made interviews with the protesting activists. One of the main slogans of the protesters was, "we are hungry because the General Headquarters (GHQ) has looted all the assets. At Karachi LPP put up the camp in front of Karachi Press Club. Hundreds of political and trade unions activists visited the camp and raised slogans against the military regime. During the first phase of the LPP movement, on 26th March demonstrations and rallies were organized in 11 different cities of Pakistan. Labour Party Pakistan has announced to organize 20 public rallies during April in different districts Pakistan. These public meetings are part of the campaign to mobilize the working class against the military regime of general Musharaf. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There is one thing about the Green Scare that is being neglected: All or nearly all persons arrested are either alleged only to have participated in actions years ago, or are accused of taking bait set by FBI sting operations! The Green Scare has NOT been effective at taking out operational cells of any direct action group. For instance, the case against persons alleged by the FBI to have been involved in the Vail action concerns a cell not alleged to have done anything since (I believe) 2001! The only reason any of these defendants were arrested at all is the FBI was looking at an expiring statute of limitations and decided to risk all on leaning on Fergerson, a known drug addict and the only person they even had anything at all on. Needless to say, this case does not in any way interfere with the ability of currently active cells to do anything, any more than the SHAC 7 case has obstructed underground direct action against HLS(which is way, way up!) Had Fergerson not been a druggie, they would not have been able to arrest him as there was no usable evidence of anything else. Had he kept his mouth SHUT, the FBI would not even have had names, much less anything else, on the other defendants associated with that case. There are several lessons of that case: 1: the odds of being captured at the scene or shortly thereafter on a carefully planned operation, one with proper recon and security, are almost zero. Nobody was caught at the scene for the actions the Vail defendants are accused of, for instance- even with action after action taking place, even with the cops going absolutely CRAZY about what was happening. The fact of the matter is, taking physical direct action is usually far safer than going to a protest, where cops and cameras are everywhere and illegal arrests are commmon. In some cases(HLS in Alexandria, VA, for instance), direct action might be a LOT safer than doing any form of legal protest in an environment where cops seek to arrest everyone for even the slightest offense. Most cases where someone gets caught at the scene of any illegal action(political or otherwise) happen because of taking careless risks like bringing motor vehicles within visual range of a target, failing to learn police patrol patterns(and camera locations) in advance, working with poorly-known partners(Anna!) who turn out to be enemy agents, or engaging targets where they do not have multiple routes of escape. 2: Too many cooks can spoil the soup-the larger the cell, the more people any snitch can bring down, and the greater the odds that one person will turn out to be a snitch. It is safer to work alone than with someone you have not known for many years and been through many situations with. 3: Once you undertake serious(felony-level) direct action, you are in for life-if anyone in the cell decides in 5 years to "go career," everyone in is the shit if the FBI suspects that person even slightly. There have been cases where the FBI has put pressure on people they had nothing on-but had gone career and were no longer willing to face danger themselves-to generate a snitch. When you decide to take on this evil, corrupt system, you are enlisting in a war. This war, the World Class War, has been described by people ranging from Neocons on the one hand to Anarchists on the other as the Fourth World War. There was WWI, WWII, and the Cold War which was WWIII on a slow burn plan. The war between Capitalism and all the people of Earth oppressed by it is WWIV. As a result, in entering the struggle you must ask youself many of the questions you would if you were enlisting to fight Hitler in 1943. You need to ask first and foremost how far you are willing to go-and how much harm to yourself you can accept. Ask yourself as well if you can tolerate living if this system is NOT stopped. If the answer is NO, you have just enlisted-if it is YES, you now have a very personal form of risk-benefit analysis to make. You then need to ask the same of all your partners. People unwilling either to die or go to prison for a very long time to protect their buddies should not participate in group direct action. They can be and should be active in any and all of the aboveground ways people organize, of course. If this is you, be careful in such organizing not to come into posession of any information you think a grand jury might want. If you know such people, do not give them such information or you endanger both them and yourself. If you can accept death or prison for your own actions, but not to protect your friends, make damned sure they know that, and either agree in advance that this is OK or work alone. In a group of people where everyone feels they can accept the risk of an action but could not stand up to a grand juty, I suggest solo direct action and avoiding protests aboveground-it is safe and fairly effective. You may also find that you are prepared to do what it takes whatever the cost, but don't know anyone else you can trust. In this case, you again need to figure out what actions it is possible to do by yourself, do those actions, and forget about actions beyond the capability of one person. If every person who cared about our Earth did just one direct action and from then on forgot about it, the Earth destroying corporations would face an ever-shifting army of millions of "ghost" warriors they could do absolutely nothing to stop. There would be no snitches, no agents of penetration, and everyone who got away at the scene would get away forever. In Occupied Iraq, there have been positions held against hordes of US troops by just TWO warriors! They use cover, concealment, and movement to create the impression of many, many more. If, however, you have a group of committed people who have known each other for years and are willing to lay down their lives for oneanother, you have the backbone of a damed serious affinity group, like the ones the FBI once compared chasing to "grasping at smoke," or "chasing Elves." In this case, you have some real power. No affinity group engaged in this kind of shit should ever be bigger than a squad in a military unit (about 12). This is itself a dangerous size, as if only one of the 12 is bad you are looking at losing 11 good warriors to a snitch. For most kinds of work, team size(about 4) is far safer and effective enough. If you really have 12 good, committed people, best practice might be to break into three teams of four, just like a squad would do at, say, Normandy in 1944. Unlike a military squad, each team operates independantly wherever possible, with their own supply caches, their own recon and intelligence, and so on. If one team is penetrated, they know nothing about the independant actions of the other two. The only things all members would know is any initial meeting, and any actions so big as to require the services of all 12. In an action that size, each affinity group member is now betting their life and liberty on the strength under fire of 11 more people, not just three more. Still, if you are, say, closing down HLS once and for all, you might need that many people to handle the logistics of, say, freeing and rehoming every animal inside HLS. Had the people accused of the Vail action broken at the start into three smaller groups(and assuming they did anything at all), I suspect there are eight people would would never have been arrested after having performed 2/3 of the alleged direct actions in two separate groups. In all actions, everyone must agree in advance that the benefit of the action outweighs the risk. Decide-and then commit, not the other way around. This goes for direct action, it goes for mass mobilizations, everything. Risk can be controlled, but never eliminated totally. You control risk with planning, security-and keeping affinity groups no bigger than they need to be. Even a mass mobilization works best when people are in small affinity groups with separate defined tasks. Police commanders refused to sanction a storming of the building instead preferring to play a waiting game until the revellers left of their own accord. They were then prevented from returning to the event. The event was hosted by an anarchist collective and billed as 'Reclaim the Future 4' on movement websites. The building is on the site of the old Mann and Overton taxi cab dealership and is due to be demolished an redeveloped. Squatters moved into the building a week ago to prepare for the Saturday event, which started at noon. A police CCTV police van was present opposite the building throughout Saturday. One of the party organisers, 'Max', said: "At around 4pm the fire brigade wanted to check health and safety. "They are not a political organisation like the police are, so we gladly showed them around. We satisfied all their requirements and they were happy. "We hired security to keep the trouble out, we had medics inside, and we police the parties ourselves. "We were aware it's a quiet residential area. We kept the music down, and turned it down further when the police asked." Earlier in the day an afternoon of workshops included alternative energy, direct action and bike maintenance. Another of the squatters, 'Paul', said: "What we are trying to do in our culture of resistance is not just concentrate on parties, but bring people together to be educated and helped. "We picked this part of town to make this experience available to local people, not just the usual suspects who always come to our events. We didn't want to exclude anyone." But later that evening the police became concerned about the number of partygoers entering the building, which at its height swelled to 500. The crowds became too much for the borough's police to contain so around 70 tough Territorial Support Group (TSG) officers, who specialise in riots, were called in. Town Hall noise and licensing teams accompanied the police and served a prohibition order on the party. Senior officers decided that instead of risking a full-scale contained riot they would play a waiting game with the revellers. As the night wore on they let people out of the venue but would not let anyone back in. The squatters claimed there were around 20 riot vans full of police and added that there "were no hard drugs at the event". Max said: "A few idiots started throwing bottles - this is what happens when you stop people getting into a party. "I was going out, trying to talk to them and the police were walloping people." An Islington Police spokesman said: "The TSG units experienced some violence, with people throwing bottles at them." The party finished at 8am, though music had to be turned off at 2am. Hayri Arslan, manager of the Kebab City shop opposite, said: "It was a loud party but we didn't mind. The clientele were all nice, we had no trouble, although the road block did affect business." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... World Campaign for the Defense of Land and Indigenous Territory and Autonomy. ... The Zapatistas, meanwhile, have just launched a World Campaign for the Defense of Autonomous Indigenous and Peasant Land and Territory in Chiapas, Mexico and the World. Inspired by the heightened struggle to defend their territories in Chiapas, the Zapatista-launched campaign has already received letters of support from Jo?o St?dile of Brazil's Landless Workers Movement and Rafael Alegr?a ( see his picture above and my translation of his letter below), along with over a thousand signed supporters from throughout Mexico and the World. ... The Global Struggle for Land and Agrarian Reform Compa?eros and Compa?eras Zapatistas: I write you in the name of the Global Campaign for Agrarian Reform of V?a Campesina International. V?a Campesina is an international movement of peasant, indigenous, landless, rural workers, and peasant women and youth organizations. The Global Campaign supports local and national struggles for land and territory, and we fight against privatization and the mercantilization of land and natural resources. V?a Campesina has a history and a debt with you, compa?eros and compa?eras of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. In 2003, when V?a Campesina helped to mount the great mobilization of Canc?n, against the train of death, the World Trade Organization, the cards and recorded messages of Comandanta Esther, of Comandante David, and of Subcomandante Marcos, were what motivated and inspired us in that battle in which we obtained a powerful victory, although at the cost of the delivery of the life of a member of the korean peasantry, and martyr of the peasant struggle, Lee Kyung-Hae. Thank you, compa?eros and compa?eras; in Canc?n we felt that our struggle was your struggle. It's more, the Zapatista struggle is a struggle that inspires all of us peasants throughout the world. And as peasants, indigenous and landless peoples, we feel that your struggle to defend your lands and recuperated territories is our struggle. We recognize the validity of the agrarian reform made by the Zapatistas in their territories, based in the Agrarian Revolutionary Law of 1993, and we denounce the coordinated 'counter-reform' agrarian campaign, in which paramilitary groups, the military, the agrarian magistrate and press, and the government conspire to displace the Zapatista communities of the land and territory recuperated as part of their 1994 uprising. The Zapatistas made a true agrarian reform in their territories, and now, just as in other countries where agrarian reforms have been made, the powerful seek to reverse these reforms, with the use of paramilitaries and extra-judicial violence, intimidation, fear, and the so-called 'rule of law' in which they use the judicial authorities to unmake the reforms, reconcentrate the land in a few hands, and attack the territories of the people. It is the same throughout the world. Because of this, the Global Campaign for Agrarian Reform of V?a Campesina completely supports, and is a part of, your World Campaign for the Defense of Land and Indigenous Territory and Autonomy. We are in the same struggle, compa?eros y compa?eras, and together we will win! That We Globalize Struggle! That We Globalize Hope! People have locked on to machinery inside the mine site. Wiradjuri Traditional Owners, locals, environmentalists and supporters from as far as Sweden, France and Canada are converging to protest the illegal operation of the worlds largest gold mining company Barrick Gold. Wiradjuri Traditional Owner, Neville 'Chappy' Williams says. "We are the first nation of people in this land. Wiradjuri has never ceded our sovereignty over our lands and waters. We have the right to life. We have right to existence. We have the right to being Wiradjuri people in our own lands." Australian Student Environment Network's national convenor, Nicola Ison says, "In the lead up t Barrick Gold's AGM on 2nd May, Wiradjuri and their supporters are presenting an eviction notice to the gold mining giant." "Barrick gold is stripping NSW of its precious water resources, internationally significant wetlands and destroying Wiradjuri history and culture." "Barrick is transporting over 6000 tonnes of cyanide annually from Gladstone, Queensland to Lake Cowal, New South Wales, creating risk of spill and lethal contamination of waterways along the 1600 km transport route" says Ison. Friends of the Earth campaigner, Holly Creenaune says, "While Australian communities are in the grip of devastating drought Barrick draws up to 17 million litres of fresh water each day at Lake Cowal. In the last 2 years, the water table has dropped 35 m due to Barrick's mine." "We will continue to disrupt mining at Lake Cowal until there is land justice and water equity for Wiradjuri and central NSW communities." Around 100 Aboriginal and environmental supporters demonstrated at the Lake Cowal Gold mine, 47 kms from West Wyalong over Easter to protest against the desecration of traditional Wiradjuri lands and environmental damage caused by gold mining. Some of the demonstrators locked themselves onto pieces of machinery, shutting down mine operations, while others occupied the mine's offices. West Wyalong police charged the protestors with entering 'inclosed land' under the obscure Inclosed Land Act 1901. The protestors were released on bail on the condition that they did not come within 10 kilometres of the mine. Wiradjuri Traditional Owners have been holding convergences at Lake Cowal for a number of years as part of their campaign to raise awareness about the destruction of their ancient cultural heritage and their demands for the mine to be closed. During yesterday's protest, a Barrick Gold mine manager refused to accept an eviction notice from Traditional Owner, Neville "Chappy" Williams. Mine Manager, Bill Shallvey, rudely refused to take the notice, the fourth issued to Barrick since 2002, shouting that Williams and his supporters were "misleading people". "Our Aboriginal People are being denied access to our sacred ground. Protestors from around the world are here to support our claim for access to our ancient lands. Australian Aboriginal Peoples have the oldest continuing living culture in the world. We Wiradjuri People are also being denied the right of spiritual and religious freedom under s.116 of the Australian Constitution," Mr Williams said. "Barrick is desecrating our sacred site and Dreaming Place and denying us access to our traditional lands. The company has moved or destroyed more than 10 000 artefacts including marked trees, damaging the integrity of the area forever. "The company did a deal with five unauthorised Wiradjuri, who signed away the ancient inheritance of over 30 000 people of the Wiradjuri Nation. After signing the secret agreement with Barrick they discontinued their Native Title Claim over the area. Our Mooka and Kalara united families' claim is still active in the Federal Court and is proceeding towards determination. Our claim group is more than several thousand people who have bloodline back to Country over thousands and thousands of years. "Despite Barrick's assertion that we are misleading people, what we are doing is our ancient cultural duty to protect our sacred Country for the generations to come. We are also raising awareness of the dangers of cyanide leach gold mining and the mine's excessive use of precious water in the middle of the worst drought on record. The fullest dams, in the very parched countryside between Condobolin and the mine, are the toxic tailings ponds west of the open cut pit, which extends into the lakebed. "I am proud of the courageous and brave protestors who entered the mine, occupied its office and locked onto the conveyor belt, shutting down operations. They had my authority to enter our traditional lands." The Easter Sunday protest was the climax of the weekend of actions that included a Saturday morning demonstration in Condobolin outside the offices of the Wiradjuri Condobolin Corporation funded by Barrick under the secret agreement. Attended by environmentalists from Bolivia, Canada, the United States, England, France, Germany, Iraq, Papua New Guinea and Switzerland as well as most Australian states, the campaign to protect Lake Cowal continues to gain international recognition as momentum grows in the fight to stop the desecration of Indigenous lands and the environmental destruction resulting from gold mining on all continents. Activists are working towards international solidarity against Barrick on 2 May 2007, the day of its Annual General Meeting. Following 14 arrests at the Lake Cowal Gold Mine, 47 kms from West Wyalong, Central Western New South Wales, police arrived unannounced this morning and attempted to re-arrest a student protestor known as "Trent". Yesterday 14 protestors were arrested after actions at the mine in which some locked on to the conveyor belt while others entered the mine's offices in support of Traditional Wiradjuri demands to stop desecrating their ancient, sacred lake and to leave the mine. The protestors were charged with entering 'inclosed lands' under the obscure Inclosed Lands Act 1901 and later released on the condition that they did not come within 10 kilometres of the mine. The Lake Cowal Easter convergence camp is located 2 km from the mine on the Marsden Road between Condobolin and West Wyalong. After police had put "Trent" into their bullwagon, protestors surrounded it, demanding his release. One of the policemen threatened to spray the campers with capsicum if they did not move. Finally the police said they would let ?Trent? go and arrest him later. Protestors are concerned that people returning home from the camp could be arrested as they leave the 10 km bail-imposed zone around the mine. A protest camp was set up near one of the gates to the Barrick Gold mine during the weekend. The protesters say the mine contaminates local waterways and damages nearby wetlands. One of the protesters, Mia Pepper, says the mine is causing environmental damage and native title issues have not been dealt with properly. "We decided that if they're not going to listen to us then we need to make them listen to us," she said. "So by doing this we are forcing them to acknowledge us and forcing them to acknowledge why we've come here." The mine's community relations manager, Bill Shalvey, says an appropriate native title agreement is in place. The activists, who included members of the Wiradjuri people, Friends of the Earth and the Australian Student Environment Network [ASEN], were arrested about 1.30pm yesterday after allegedly breaching the perimeter of the Lake Cowal gold mine, which is run by the world's largest gold producer, Barrick. They claim the mine's operations are environmentally damaging. Around 80 environmental and Indigenous campaigners are demonstrating at the Barrick's mine at Lake Cowal, near Condobolin. Some of the demonstrators have locked themselves to pieces of mining machinery, while others have been arrested after occupying the mine's offices. Friends of the Earth campaigner Holly Creenaune says the protests have been held on Easter Sunday for the past six years. "Wiradjuri tradition owners hold a corroboree each Easter and have for the last several years, inviting local community on to Wiradjuri country," he said. "This weekend we've seen over 80 people from France, from Sweden, from Melbourne, from Adelaide, from Sydney and all across Australia, converging to support this Wiradjuri-led campaign to stop gold mining at Lake Cowal." (Even though members of this minority owned the company involved - ultimately this is a typical neoliberal decision and the government is very much complicit) This is rather reminiscent of Indonesia during the economic crisis, when the state deflected grievances onto the Chinese minority who were associated with the business community, and thus avoided bearing the brunt of the unrest itself. Obviously as a long-standing anti-racist I oppose ethnically-targeted attacks, but at the same time it is completely necessary to resist this kind of neoliberal ecocide. It is also clear that the unrest was a direct result of police repression and an unjustifiable ecocidal neoliberal land grab. Notice also (in the last report) that this is being used as a pretext to round up dissidents on overblown charges - apparently demonstration organisers are to be charged with murder! The police also admit to having arrested innocent people. Some reports suggest that the demonstration may be putting Museveni under pressure with regard to the rainforest issue - apparently he is now claiming that "no decision has been made". This is in contrast to the response of several Ugandan papers, which denounce Museveni and the land "deal". http://allafrica.com/stories/200704120492.html Uganda: Three Die As Demo Turns Violent The Nation (Nairobi) April 12, 2007 Posted to the web April 12, 2007 Monitor Team with Reuters Nairobi Three people have been killed in Kampala after a peaceful demonstration turned violent. A man of Asian origin was stoned to death and two other people killed as protesters turned violent, police and witnesses said. The demonstrators were opposed to plans to axe parts of a rainforest reserve to grow sugarcane. Troops in several armoured cars have been deployed in Central Kampala. Regional police commander Edward Ochom told Reuters officers opened fire with tear gas and live rounds after demonstrators began attacking Asian businesses and a Hindu temple, angered by moves to expand an Indian-owned company's sugar plantations. "Three people have been confirmed dead," he said. "One is an Asian man who was stoned to death by the rioters. The other two are Ugandans and we are still investigating their deaths." Witnesses reported that in attempting to turn their demonstrators away from their preferred route, the police took to firing teargas, while the demonstrators hit back by throwing stones at anti-riot police. The demonstrators also warned Asians against crossing their path, which prompted police to deploy at various Asian fixtures, notably shops and temples. In spite of earlier assurances that no teargas would be used to stop the demonstration, police went back on their word after the demonstrators ignored a directive to use Nasser Road instead of Kampala Road. Police had reasoned that using Kampala Road would paralyse business in the city, but the Save Mabira Crusade pressure group- the organisers of the demo, were having none of it, claiming that the demo had to be carried out in the open. A Reuters journalist saw the bloodied body of an Asian man in the street. Police blocked roads in the centre of the capital. Scores of demonstrators hurled rocks at them. Protest organiser Frank Muramuzi said the march began peacefully before a "misunderstanding" with the police. "All of a sudden they opened fire with tear gas and live ammunition," Muramuzi said. "Everyone scattered but two people were seen lying in the road. I don't know if they were killed or injured, but they have been rushed to hospital." Police commanders had earlier approved the march, called to protest at plans to cut down thousands of hectares of Mabira Forest to expand the estate of local sugar company Scoul. Scoul is part of the Indian-owned Mehta Group. The controversy began last year when President Yoweri Museveni ordered a study into whether to axe 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres) or nearly a third of Mabira. Mabira - which has been a nature reserve since 1932 - is one of Uganda's last remaining patches of natural forest. The government's proposal angered some parliamentarians and residents. They said the environmental costs of slashing the forest would far exceed the economic benefits of the plantation. Environmentalists say destroying Mabira could have grave ecological consequences, from increased soil erosion to the drying up of rivers and rainfall, and the removal of a buffer against polluting nearby Lake Victoria. They say it would also threaten monkeys and nine species found only in Mabira and surrounding forests - the Tit Hylia bird, six butterflies, a moth and a shrub used to treat malaria. In a newspaper advert published on Thursday, Scoul said "anti-development lobby groups" were misleading Uganda's public about the company's plans for Mabira. "Scoul is very conscious of the environment and would not like to disturb the ecology," it said. http://allafrica.com/stories/200704150044.html Uganda: From Demo to Disaster Email This Page Print This Page New Vision (Kampala) COLUMN April 14, 2007 Posted to the web April 15, 2007 Kampala On Thursday, critics of the proposed Mabira Forest give-away gathered in Kampala to demonstrate against the move. A few short hours later, one Asian and two Ugandans lay dead, windows were broken and shops looted. Elizabeth Agiro examines what happened in between... IT has happened before and it can happen again. There is fear in the Asian community that history could be repeating itself after last week's events. In 1972, former President Idi Amin forced Asians out of Uganda, leaving most of their businesses to be taken over by Ugandans who run them down. On Thursday, a group of demonstrators converged near the railway station in Kampala with the intention of holding a peaceful demonstration against the Mabira Forest give-away. They were to walk through Nasser Road and hold a rally at Clock Tower on Entebbe Road. That demonstration soon turned chaotic when a few individuals vented their anger on Indians, a community to which Mehta, the proposed Mabira beneficiary, belongs. A day before, business owners in town had been warned to lock their shops and not report for duty on Thursday. Those who disobeyed were harassed. Angry demonstrators also stopped cars asking if there were any Indian passengers. A few were slapped and stoned, escaping with minor injuries. One was not as lucky. He was stoned and clubbed to death. On Friday Indian-owned businesses stayed closed all day. Later in the afternoon, the Indian Association in Uganda met the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura and security minister Amama Mbabazi at the association's offices on Lumumba Avenue. The Indians wanted assurance on the safety of their lives and businesses. They got it. But what could have caused such a deterioration in affairs? This is what happened on Thursday. 8:30am Although they are supposed to meet at 9:00am, demonstrators are slowly gathering in front of the Uganda Railways building. There is excitement in the air. Students from Makerere's Forestry department, religious leaders, environmental activists such as Ken Lukyamuzi, politicians, non-governmental organisations and even street children chant pro-environment and anti-government slogans. Other demonstrators wave sticks and tree branches. A few wear face masks. Although some wear suits, almost everyone is in casual wear, like they know they will have to run. Big names include MPs Jimmy Akena and Beti Kamya, DP's Mukasa Mbidde, former presidential candidate Abed Bwanika, Save Mabira Forest's Frank Muramuzi, Grace Kaiso from Uganda Christian Council and Makerere University lecturer Oweyegha Afunadula. While some sing, others hum to the marching tunes of an accompanying school band. Many others write phrases on placards: "Bad governments make bad decisions", "Save Mabira" etc. Meanwhile in town, shop owners have reported to work. All shops are closed, but the workers stand on the verandahs, hoping the situation will stay calm so they can open for the day. Those who have tried to open have been intimidated into closing their shops. Others stand and sit in clusters gossiping about the latest on the Mabira story. They check their watches every few minutes, knowing that every minute gone is a missed business deal. 9:30am A group of politicians, religious leaders and environmentalists breaks away from the demonstrators. They go to Parliament to hand a petition to the Speaker of Parliament. The plan is to move to Clock Tower and hold a rally but the team that goes to Parliament is taking so long. The Police are standing on the sidelines monitoring everything. All is well. Then the demonstrators get agitated over the delay of their leaders' return and decide to join them. However, the anti-riot Police have deployed to block the route to Parliament. Another group stands alert at former Esso corner. 10:15am The group that went to Parliament is back. When the crowd sees them, they get renewed strength. The leaders raise two fingers in the air in a V sign. Screams and cheers greet the gesture. The leaders confront the Police saying they will go through the human blockade to Kampala Road. They argue that they do not want to demonstrate on the empty Nasser Road. Regional Police Commander Kampala Edward Ochom advises the crowd to stick to the approved route. 10:35am The crowd moves towards Jinja Road, but the Police are stationed there. The crowd turns to Kampala Road, but the Police block them from reaching Commercial Plaza. They insist on moving forward and the policemen cock their guns. This throws everyone into a frenzy. Stones and sticks fly through the air towards the Police. Akena and Lukyamuzi try to calm the crowd, but peace is the furthest thing from a few individual's minds. The Police fire three teargas canisters into the air and spray bullets in the direction of a group of spectators standing at the Bank of Baroda Bank building. The crowd disintegrates into various groups. The biggest group flees towards Uganda Railways, another towards Parliament and another to Jinja Road. Yet another group runs to William Street. Two teargas vehicles are parked at Nandos. On Dustar Street, a blue police vehicle drives around with someone shouting over a public address system, asking whoever wants to demonstrate to move towards the railways building. The speaker advises people to avoid rioting, but have a peaceful demonstration. Meanwhile, the group that went in the direction of Uganda Railways develops the idea of lynching Indians, who they claim are the cause of the Mabira problems. They split into several smaller groups. Some slip through Nasser Road and join Kampala Road. Others pass behind Uganda House and Charm Towers to join Kampala Road. They collided with the riot-police and fight them with sticks and stones. At Orient Bank, one Indian is cornered on his scooter and beaten. He, however, escapes. 11:00am The situation is out of hand. On Entebbe Road, the demonstrators pelt Indians they spot staring out windows of Conrad Plaza. At Ganesh building, the gates are locked, but one Indian is riding his scooter just outside the building. The crowd hits him, but he too escapes. Another one riding towards Kampala Road from Entebbe Road gets a few slaps. The demonstration is now a full blown riot. The crowd is moving towards Shoprite. Another Indian escapes from the angry mob, leaving his scooter behind. Chanting rioters torch it. Another Indian drives a salon car down past Centenary Bank fleeing the rioters. He runs over Radio One journalist Simon Kaggwa and drives off. The angry crowd can only throw stones at the disappearing car, but they revenge on the next Indian they find. They pull him off his scooter, tear his clothes and throw him on the ground. Two individuals clobber him, while others stone him. He pleads for mercy, but the blows continue to rain down on him. One thug slips a ring off his finger as others empty his pockets. He is rushed to hospital, but dies on the way. A truck with Kenyan number plates soon arrives at the Shoprite junction. It belongs to businessman Tom Mugenga. The occupants run off when the mob approaches it. They set the truck ablaze, but since they are near the Fire Department Headquarters, the firemen quickly put out the blaze. The mob continues to Katwe and carries off motorcycles in an Indian-run showroom. Meanwhile, on Dustar Street, an Indian is walking by when someone screams: "Mehta". Suddenly he is surrounded. He is beaten and injured, but succeeds in escaping to Express Hotel where the Police is directing Indians to take refuge. Others rioters are hitting every building owned by Indians. 12:00pm Back on Kampala Road, one rioter is shot in the leg. Someone else, packing up his payphone equipment is mistaken for a looter and shot in the back. One group, led by Mbidde converges at Hot Loaf on Luwum Street. Another comes from the city centre. Both are chasing Indians, who are trying to take refuge at the Central Police Station (CPS). Those stranded in buildings, are evacuated by the Uganda Indian Association and herded into vans. The Bata shop on Dustar Street is broken into and looted. One group of rioters surrounds the Hindu Temple opposite Shoprite on Ben Kiwanuka Street. They break its windows and those of the nearby arcades. The Police intervene. 2:00pm An act of God stops the situation from generating into pure anarchy; the skies open, releasing torrents of rain. The rioters take shelter. Armoured military vehicles together with two pick-up trucks patrol Kampala Road. Shortly after the rain, the rioters are back in action, but their leaders have disappeared. At CPS, throngs of Indians, some of them children, jump into police vans and are driven to safety under Police guard. A crowd at Centenary Bank is still battling it out with the Police. When the Police fire a teargas canister, a youthful boy picks it up and quickly throws it back at the Police. The Police fire another canister and it is also tossed back. Unarmed Local Defence Unit staff flee the scene. A vehicle with personal plates - Mehta 1 - races down Entebbe Road with three pick-up trucks of military men guarding it. The military has dispersed the rioters on Luwum Street. 5:30pm Looting continues at Kibuye. 6:00pm The Police deploys at banks, with private security lending a helping hand. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6551303.stm Eyewitness: Uganda attacks on Asians Kampala resident Salim Matovu was at Thursday's protest against the allocation of a forest reserve to a sugar company, which turned violent leading to the death of at least three people. The sugar company is owned by Ugandan Asians and some protesters started to attack members of the country's small but economically powerful Asian community. Asians have returned to Uganda, after being expelled by Idi Amin At first it was very peaceful but when policemen denied the demonstrators access to Kampala Road, they turned rowdy. Some started chanting songs against Indians asking them to return to their country. The protest turned into a hunting session for Indian men and women all over the central business district. The first victim was an Indian man who was innocently walking near the clock tower in Kampala. The irate mob pounced on him and stoned him to death. When the crowds reached Entebbe Road, they attacked another Indian man riding home on his motor bike. The man was suspected to be fleeing from the protesters. He was pulled off the motorbike, slapped and beaten severely but luckily policemen rescued him. His motorbike was however burnt to ashes by the protestors. Running battles The crowd hurled insults at the police as they accused Indians of taking over retail businesses in the city and Uganda's economy. The police blocked the protesters As the protestors snaked through the streets, many Indian traders closed their shops and started leaving the town hurriedly. Some shops were looted in the ensuing running battles. Protestors also attacked and tried to enter a Hindu Temple at Nakasero, where some Indians had sought refuge but policemen arrived timely to protect them. The Indians were later transferred on a bus to the central police station. Trouble then spread out to Kampala suburbs where an Indian couple was attacked in Kansanga, as they tried to drive out of town. Their car was smashed and they were beaten before policemen on patrol rescued them. Others attacks on Indian motorists took place in Kibuye, Ndeeba and Natete. A new truck that had Kenyan registration numbers was also burnt by the protestors who claimed that it was used to ferry sugar from Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited [which wants to take over part of the Mabira forest reserve]. Kampala is now calm as the irate crowds have dispersed by the heavy rains and policemen. http://www.bakutoday.net/view.php?d=36185 Three killed as Ugandan police disperse environmental protest KAMPALA 12/04/2007 19:11 At least three people were killed Thursday during violent protests against a government decision to hive off swathes of protected forest for sugar plantation by an Indian company, police said. Police spokesman Simeon Nsubuga said two people were killed as they tried to break into a shop in the capital as security forces were dispersing thousands of demonstrators from the streets. "Two Ugandan rioters who were trying to loot a shop were shot dead by security guards," Nsubuga told AFP. Earlier, Kampala police chief Edward Ocwom said a man of Indian origin died after being beaten by demonstrators. "I have just confirmed that one Indian who was beaten by rioters has just died at Mulago hospital. I do not know any other case of death, but we are still gathering information," he told AFP. Earlier, police fired live rounds and tear gas in the air to disperse thousands of protestors in downtown Kampala rallying against the plan to clear around 7,000 of the 30,000 hectares (75,000 acres) in Mabira Forest Reserve east of Kampala. The government plans to seek parliamentary approval before handing over the forest land to Indian-owned Mehta Group for sugar cane farming. Military police beat and dispersed the demonstrators, who had also attacked motorists of Indian origin and burnt a truck that was carrying sugar. Several people were injured in the riots that forced businesses to shut down. The protestors tried to raid a Hindu temple, but were blocked by police. "All Indians should go back to Bombay. Mr President, let Mabira stay. (Yoweri) Museveni is trying to rob us. We are tired of Indians," read some of the placards brandished by the crowd. They also chanted slogans in praise of former dictator Idi Amin, who expelled Indian merchants from Uganda and confiscating their properties in 1972. "Amin, Uganda's Jesus wouldn't accept this." "Mehta, do you want another Amin?" read other banners. Amin, whose 1971-1979 rule was marked by atrocities, was finally ousted and died in exile in Saudi Arabia in 2003. Furious conservationists have warned that further encroachment of the forest would threaten up to 312 species of trees, 287 species of bird and 199 of butterflies. In December, Norwegian environmentalist Olav Bjella quit as National Forestry Authority chief after refusing to implement Museveni's order to approve the clearance of a rainforest on Lake Victoria's Ssesse Islands for a palm plantation, saying it was against his conscience and the laws of Uganda. http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/B062B0A4-5110-4A74-A687-3E6E6D727B43.htm forest protest turns deadly Anger has erupted over the plan to allocate part of the forest to a sugar cane grower [Reuters] Four people have been killed in the Ugandan capital Kampala during protests against a government move to allow an Indian-owned company to grow sugar cane in a protected forest. April 13, 2007 05:46 pm.- By David Odoki. (SomaliNet) What was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration turned bloody on Thursday when at least three people died and scores were injured in a demonstration against the proposed giveaway of part of Mabira forest to the Mehta family. Property was not spared either. It took divine intervention of a downpour that perhaps kept a charged mob away from the streets after Riot Police and Military Police had failed to control the mobs. Ugandan Police fired tear gas and live bullets to stop rioters from attacking Asians, the protesters linked to Mehta and their businesses.Police spent most of the evening soothing sections of the Asian community in Kampala frightened by mob attacks on their property. Scores had sought refuge at the Central Police Station (CPS). Although deployed in the city to quash the riots, the combined force of police and the military, spent much of the afternoon protecting fleeing Asians from protestors. Irate protestors then vented their frustration at any Asian they came across. An Asian who was driving a pick-up near Conrad Plaza was stoned and his vehicle destroyed. He sped off. Rioters also burnt a trailer registration number ZC 5832 and KAX 662M they believed belonged to an Asian. At a press briefing, the Ugandan Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura said police would hold the leaders of the demonstration accountable for yesterday's events. He singled out Fred Mbidde, MP Atim Anywar (Kitgum woman), and Issa Ssekitto as the ring leaders. "It is very un-Ugandan, very un-African and I have never seen this before. Ugandans have exhibited a lot of sectarianism," Maj Gen Kale Kayihura said. "How do you attack innocent people? We are back to the days of Idi Amin." Police arrested 20 people suspected of being the ringleaders of Thursday's melee and offered special security to Asians in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, said Information Minister Kirunda Kivejinja. Police were guarding some Asians in their homes. The protest was aimed at a subsidiary of the Mehta Group, which is run by Ugandans of Indian descent. Police Maj Gen Kale Kaihura confirmed the account. "Yes, two (Asians) have died," he said. "It's unfortunate that hooligans have attacked the Asians." Two other Ugandans also were killed in the melee, but the circumstances of their deaths was not known, police spokesperson Edward Ochom said. A suspected looter was shot by guards, a passer-by was hit by a stray bullet and an Asian man was stoned to death, while police have fired live bullets. There have been several attacks on Asians in Kampala, and a Hindu temple has been damaged. The sugar firm which wants to use part of the Mabira forest is Asian-owned. Environmentalists say the move threatens the existence of rare species of trees and birds in the 30,000 hectare forest. 'Frightening' The march began quietly, with some 1,000 people marching through central Kampala, carrying placards and tree branches. "People were demonstrating peacefully when there was a misunderstanding with the police. All of a sudden they opened fire," environmental activist Frank Muramuzi told Reuters news agency. The BBC's Sarah Grainger in Kampala says protesters threw stones at the police and set fire to vehicles. An Asian motorcyclist was attacked and later beaten to death, witnesses say. Our correspondent says the demonstration took on a racial dimension with some protestors blaming the country's Asian-Ugandan population for the situation because the parent company of the sugar firm, Mehta Grou, is owned by an Asian Ugandan. Reuters also reports that police had to rescue about 40 men from a Hindu temple after it was attacked by a mob. "We were inside the temple and the protesters started attacking us from outside," 50-year-old Dipaul Patel told Reuters. "It was very frightening." A police source says about 20 people have been arrested. The Sugar Corporation of Uganda (Scoul), part of the Mehta group, wants to expand its plantations in central Uganda, taking over one-third of the Mabira forest. Campaigners are now calling on Ugandans to boycott its sugar products. They used to control much of the economy, sparking resentment among some Ugandans. Supporters of Scoul's bid for more land say the expansion of would create more jobs and income for the country. They dismiss those opposing the move saying subsistence farmers have already encroached on much of the forest land. Three killed, 100 flee as anti-Asian anger erupts ? Scenes revive memories of '72 Amin hate campaign Xan Rice, East Africa correspondent Friday April 13, 2007 The Guardian Uganda's capital, Kampala, erupted into racial violence yesterday, with three people killed during a protest against government plans to allow Ugandan-Asian industrialists to grow sugar cane on protected forest land. In scenes described as reminiscent of 1972, when Idi Amin led a hate campaign against south Asian merchants, demonstrators attacked businesses and a Hindu temple, where police had to rescue more than 100 people seeking sanctuary. An Asian man was reported to have been stoned to death after being pulled off his motorbike. Several other motorists were beaten and a sugar truck was set on fire. Demonstrators shouting anti-Indian slogans hurled rocks at troops who set up roadblocks to stop the protests spreading. Soldiers retaliated with live ammunition, killing two black Ugandans. The march, which was authorised by police and began peacefully, was arranged by environmentalists, opposition leaders and religious groups angered by a government proposal to allow the Mehta Group to clear a quarter of the Mabira forest reserve to grow sugar. The 30,000-hectare (7,400-acre) reserve, east of Kampala, contains some of the last patches of virgin forest in Uganda and serves as an important water catchment area. President Yoweri Museveni last year ordered a study into whether to allow Scoul, a local sugar firm owned by Mehta, to use 7,100 hectares of the forest. The state has a 30% share in Mehta. Though conservationists said the move would ruin an area containing hundreds of species, the government pushed ahead with its plans for the reserve, which has been protected since 1932. Critics say President Museveni is moving ahead at the expense of the environment. A decision to allow a rainforest to be cleared for a private palm plantation on the Ssesse Islands in Lake Victoria caused a storm of protest last year. Olav Bjella, a Norwegian environmentalist who headed Uganda's National Forestry Authority quit in protest, saying it was against his conscience to implement the order. The Mehta Group took out newspaper advertisements that branded the opponents of the Mabira forest scheme as "anti-development" and dismissed concerns about the environmental impact. Analysts say that the company's aggressive stance, coupled with the government's intransigence, amplified and charged the debate. Angelo Izama, a commentator at the Daily Monitor newspaper in Kampala, said: "What happened today was less about the environment than resentment by the oppressed Ugandan economic class towards the Asian commercial class." Some of the 500 protesters chanted slogans praising Amin, who expelled south Asians from Uganda in 1972 - including the wealthy Mehta family who fled to Britain and India - and confiscated their property. One of the placards read: "Mehta, do you want another Amin?" In the 1990s the Mehta family was among thousands of Asian-Ugandans who returned to reclaim their properties, under a campaign to encourage foreign investment. Many have flourished, particularly in the manufacturing, banking and hotel sector. Their success has led to resentment by some black Ugandans, who say the government is not doing enough for them. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Uganda support Tharoor's candidature Indo-Asian News Service Kampala/New Delhi, April 13, 2007 First Published: 14:41 IST(13/4/2007) Last Updated: 02:06 IST(15/4/2007) Two days after an Indian was killed by a mob protesting an Indian sugar firm's plan to develop part of a protected rainforest, most frightened Indians in the Ugandan capital Saturday stayed indoors despite President Yoweri Museveni assuring them of their safety. In New Delhi, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said Saturday that India was keeping a close watch on the situation and said that it has taken up the issue of Indians' safety with the Ugandan government. The body of Devang Rawal, who was stoned to death by rioters in Kampala, is likely to be flown to his hometown Ahmedabad later Saturday. "Uganda Funeral Services is preparing the body to be flown to India," said Rajni Taylor, who heads the Ugandan Indian Association, adding that his employers were supervising the burial arrangements. Rawal was working as a sales representative with Translink (U) Ltd, a company importing products of Johnson & Johnson and Nestle products. Officials from the Indian High Commission on Thursday evening visited Mulago Hospital mortuary where the body of Rawal was being kept. "To attack, insult or damage the property of any Ugandan or guests of Uganda is something the government will not tolerate," Museveni said in a statement Friday. "I want to assure Ugandans that such hooliganism will not be allowed to happen again, and to warn those that do not want to follow the law they will pay heavily," Museveni added. Many Indian-owned shops were closed in Kampala and many Indians decided to stay home and not send their children to school. Knowing the sensitivity of such attacks and its possible impact on the Ugandan economy in which Indians, mostly traders, play a key role, the police swung into action and has identified those responsible for rioting and looting that hit the city Thursday. For Indians living there for generations, Thursday's mob attack that included Indians being dragged off motorbikes and beaten, their shops looted and a Hindu temple attacked, it was an eerie recall of virulent anti-India bashing by former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin who expelled nearly 75,000 Asians in 1972. The rioting mob was protesting the move by The Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL), part of the Indian-owned Mehta group, to expand its sugar estates by cutting the Mabira rain forest- one of Uganda's last remaining patches of natural forest. It has been a nature reserve since 1932. Troops had to be deployed to control the situation, after police failed to stop rioters attacking Asian businesses. Shangu Patel of the Indian Association went around the city Friday encouraging Asians to reopen their shops but his efforts were met with scepticism, the online edition of New Vision reported. "How can we be very sure that there will be no repeat?" asked a local Indian shopkeeper. The controversy began last year when the Ugandan government ordered a study whether to cut down nearly a third of Mabira- one of Uganda's last remaining patches of natural forest. The government's proposal had angered many in the country who alleged that the environmental costs of slashing the forest would far exceed the economic benefits of the plantation. Until 1972, Asians constituted the largest non-indigenous ethnic group in Uganda. http://news.monstersandcritics.com/africa/news/article_1291348.php/Ugandan_Asians_resume_business_two_days_after_racist_riots Africa News Ugandan Asians resume business two days after racist riots Apr 14, 2007, 11:35 GMT Kampala - Ethnic Asians in the Ugandan capital Kampala reopened their businesses on Saturday, two days after a racist riot targeting members of the Asian community left three people dead including an Indian. A demonstration mounted in the city on Thursday by environmental groups protesting against a government plan to give thousands of acres of a forest reserve for an expansion of an Asian-owned sugar plantation, instead turned against the Asians, mostly Indians owning shops in the city. Demonstrators attacked members of the Asian community, stoning them and looting shops. Three people were killed including an Indian while eight others were injured. The scared Asians closed their premises and had since then sought police protection. 'On Friday night, we had a meeting with the minister of security, the minister of internal affairs and the inspector general of police and they assured us of security,' Parminder Singh, a member of the 14,000-strong Indian Association, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Saturday. 'They told us to resume work,' he added. 'We have been talking to our people and assuring them that they will be safe. 250 members of the Asian community attended the meeting. They understood the problem. We told them that incidents like this happen in life and that you cannot stay angry for ever,' Singh said by telephone. Asian business premises, mostly dealing in electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles and building materials had been padlocked since Thursday but many were open by Saturday morning. Heavily armed police and military personnel were however still patrolling the streets in downtown Kampala and in the suburbs. The attacks on the Asians were the bloodiest since 1972, the year when former Ugandan military dictator Idi Amin ordered a mass expulsion of over 75,000 Asians, mostly of Indian and Pakistan descent, who dominated the country's merchant and business class. The country was then plunged into economic chaos as businesses and shops closed. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1091034 Asians in Uganda fleeing to Kenya Agencies Sunday, April 15, 2007 23:16 IST KAMPALA: Many Asians, including several Indians, have reportedly fled Uganda to Kenya through Busia on the Uganda-Kenya border post while scores sought refuge at the Central Police Station, fearing renewed racial attacks against them. Asian businessmen in Kampala, who had closed their businesses after Thursday's attacks, agreed to reopen their shops following assurance by the authorities. However, they were still sceptical about their safety. Police stepped up security around properties owned by the Indians and their temples. An Indian national Devang Rawal (24), was stoned to death by violent mobs on Thursday which attacked the properties owned by Asians. They were protesting against the bid by a local sugar company, SCOUL, which is part of the Indian-owned Mehta Group, for the Mabira Forest Reserve to expand its estate. Rawal who tried to flee the mob on a motorcycle, was intercepted, pulled down and stoned to death. "Rawal was riding a motorcycle when he was stoned at clocktower. He died on his way to Mulago hospital,'" Kampala Police Spokesman Simeo Neubuqa said. Officials from the Indian High Commission on Thursday visited Mulago Hospital mortuary where the body of the deceased was kept. Rawal was working as a sales representative with Translink (U) Ltd. A Swami Narayan Temple and a branch of the Bank of Baroda was damaged in the violent demonstrations. Many shops were attacked and cars burnt. http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/51825.html Uganda promises Indians security, Indians still scared Kampala/New Delhi, April 14 Two days after an Indian was killed by a mob protesting an Indian sugar firm's plan to develop part of a protected rainforest, most frightened Indians in the Ugandan capital Saturday stayed indoors despite President Yoweri Museveni assuring them of their safety. Museveni's plan to sale Mabira Forest to the Mehta Group of Companies was worsened by the president's decision to politicise what was obviously a case of criminal hooliganism. In a statement issued after the murder of three people and the injury of scores more, President Museveni claimed that these were acts of the political opposition groups, an attempt to divert the world's attention from the widespread opposition to his foolhardy plan to destroy one of the country's most precious assets. By politically exploiting this tragedy, Museveni betrayed an arrogant disregard for the sensitivities of the bereaved families and the frustration felt by Ugandans and other world citizens at the deafness of the Ugandan president. Clearly, the fools who engaged in primitive violence did not understand the purpose of the Save Mabira demonstration. They had no clue about the real economic forces and power brokers behind the Museveni-Mehta deal. And they could not have possessed the most rudimentary knowledge of what any of the major political parties in Uganda stood for. They were hooligans simply hitching a ride on a serious demonstration by serious advocates for environmental protection. If I were Mr Museveni, I would abandon the tired routine of blaming the political opposition for everything that goes wrong in the country. Instead I would reflect on the possible reasons why some of the demonstrators turned on Asians with such deadly results. One reason may be that the attack on the Asians was in fact an attack on Mr Museveni and the boss of the Mehta Group, both of whom were beyond the physical reach of the angry mob. Museveni's actions and rhetoric over recent years have created resentment towards foreign businessmen, mostly of Asian origin. He has vigorously promoted policies that have favoured foreign business interests, even as he has dismissed and abused the rights and arguments of fellow Ugandans. He appears to care more about the economic and security wellbeing of foreign investors than the welfare and human rights of Ugandans. Frankly, those who accuse Museveni of behaving like a Nyampara [foreman] on the payroll of multinationals may not be off the mark. To President Museveni, the executives of the Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited [Scoul], a subsidiary of the Mehta Group of Companies, and others to whom he is handing choice real estate and other public assets are the real stakeholders in Uganda, not the 28 million citizens who call Uganda home. It is not surprising that Ugandans are fighting back. Unfortunately, some of the frustrated citizens, propelled by the universal problem of raw ethnic and racial prejudice, have reacted with resentment towards the Asians, the recipients of the president's favour. For their part, leading Asian businessmen have associated themselves with the president and his corrupt regime. They have financed the president's campaigns for election and re-election in 1996, 2001 and 2006 . The national treasurer of the ruling National Resistance Movement Organisation party is an Asian. While none of this is illegal, it suggests that the lessons of 1972 have probably been forgotten. The deep-seated anti-Asian feeling was reflected in the euphoria that greeted Gen. Idi Amin's expulsion of Asians from Uganda. The politically correct thing is to condemn the perpetrators of last week's violence and to lecture them about the evils of racism. But the honest citizen is one who condemns the violence but acknowledges the terrible reality that anti-Asian racism is as alive and well in Uganda as it was 35 years ago. The challenge for the Asians in Uganda, whether citizens or foreigners, is to examine their individual and group behaviour in a country that is steeped in deep economic disparity, with the Asians, a tiny minority, sitting at the top of the economic pyramid. Without surrendering their basic human rights, the Asians are well advised to side with the people of Uganda in the current struggle for justice. A decision to remain aloof or to cozy up to Museveni's repressive and arrogant regime will not guarantee them the safety they rightly crave. Of course the rest of us have a duty to educate our fellow countrymen that the people to fight over Mabira are not the Asian migrant workers who are simply doing their Kyeyo (migrnat labour) in Uganda. It is not the foreign Asian businessmen or Asian-Ugandans who have as much right to live and work in Uganda as any Mukasa, Mugisha or Mundua. The people to fight, using our intellect and ability to mobilise international opinion, are the top executives of Scoul who are stubbornly pushing an agenda to feed their greed and short-sightedness. But the person who deserves the strongest condemnation is President Museveni whose reckless agenda to destroy the country's greenbelt in the name of modernisation will be his worst legacy. Contact: mkmulera at aol.com http://www.eastandard.net/hm_news/news_s.php?articleid=1143967337 Museveni stalking the old embers of violence Because of its remoteness we can easily dismiss the Friday confrontation in Uganda sparked by excision of Mabira rainforest as an external problem. We could argue the crisis, ignited by President Museveni's decision to give away 7,100 of 31,000 hectares of prime rain forest, to an Indian-run sugar firm for sugarcane plantation, is localised. We could also delude ourselves it matters not what Uganda's court ruled in 2004. The court concluded the change of land use, by way of allocation to Kakira Sugar Works for sugarcane cultivation, violated the Constitution. It is also tempting to say before we talk about the Mabira fiasco, we should first remove the log in our eyes, by way of cleaning up the mess in Mt Elgon District, healing the gaping wounds in the hearts of its people, protecting local water masses, and enforcing peace. It could rightly, barring the fact the spirit of East African Community envisages collapsible borders and integrated economy, be said Mabira is a drop in the ocean compared to such weighty matters afflicting Kenya. Top on the list would be our political polarity, inter, and intra-party anarchy, economic haemorrhage, corruption, and the gushing wounds of ethnic hate. Cynics are also bound to argue that given Uganda's bloodletting history, Mabira is pinhead among the country's problems. But the reverse is also true. Uganda currently enjoys relative peace, except in the North where the National Resistance Movement and the Lords Resistance Army play deadly games with guns, all it could need is a flicker that could take that country back to the dark ages. It should not be forgotten that though relatively peaceful, Uganda has shed so much blood, particularly during the ruinous reign of Africa's villainous dictator, Idi Amin Dada. There was then the infamous forced Asian exodus of the 1970s, during which Amin's insatiable bloodhounds took over their businesses. And in the process, because of the chaotic takeover, torpedoed the nation to the dunk-heap of pillaged economies. That is why the latest violence against Asians, and the looming fear the isolation and violence against this minority could snowball must be discouraged. It does not help matters that some of the protesters chillingly declared it was not beyond Uganda's resourcefulness to produce another Amin. Surely, Africa deserves better, including Ugandans. Such statements are contemptuous of the African spirit and brotherliness. Uganda, it should be remembered, despite the bravado posturing of its leadership, is not yet out of the woods. There are areas where illegal arms reign supreme. To the North, according to the United Nations, there are about 1.6 internally displaced people crammed in refugee camps. In the same breath the UN estimates that 1,000 Ugandans die every week in this corner. Besides the fear that the attack on Asians could be replicated outside Uganda, to detrimental consequences by way of irrepressible upheaval and violation of human rights, it is important to make peace now. But listening to President Museveni emerges the picture of a leader not so keen on negotiation. The claim by environmentalists that the excision would cause serious environmental consequences sounds hollow to Museveni whose eyes are riveted onto the economic gain of processing. "I shall not be deterred by people who don't see where the future of Africa lies," he said. No matter who is right or wrong, peace has to be given a chance and dialogue is the key. The region is watching how Uganda settles this conflict. http://www.monitor.co.ug/oped/oped04161.php Editorial | April 16, 2007 Mabira Forest: Just do the right thing It is a good thing that President Yoweri Museveni told worried veterans in Kiboga that nothing has been decided on the Mabira matter. How much better would it be if the president stopped sending mixed signals to the public on this touchy issue which has already cost the lives of three people? It is not enough for the president to change his tone as and when it suits a particular audience considering that just a few days earlier he had been rather abrasive. Now then, since this issue still has to be discussed in Cabinet and Parliament, what better opportunity than now to urge the president and MPs to simply do the right thing - abandon any thoughts of degazetting Mabira. Those who have been entrusted wield power by the people must take into serious consideration the agitation this emotive issue continues to generate. They must ask the following questions: Is the clearly reckless intention to give away Mabira forest to an investor whose management credentials have already been brought into question worth the loss of life and social unrest? Is the expected damage to the environment, our ecosystems and climate worth the purported increase in sugarcane production? Is it sensible and worth all the trouble to split the country between the very, very tiny minority who wish to destroy this vital rainforest and the rest of the 28 million Ugandans who have rejected this dangerous attack on our environment? These are some of the key questions that the Cabinet and Parliament must address when considering this straightforward matter. The two bodies should be advised that from what has occurred and continues to occur in the public domain, only one decision will be considered correct - rebuffing Mehta. Ugandans appear to have transcended the parochial political point-scoring that many of our politicians might be prone to and instead looked at the national interest in all its gravity. President Museveni reportedly made the interesting point that political opportunists were hijacking the campaign to save Mabira when he met the veterans. It should equally interest the government to know that Ugandans can clear see through politics . As we urge all Ugandans to remain steadfast in their opposition to degazetting Mabira, and as we again condemn the xenophobic attacks on members of the Asian community by certain rascals who took advantage of last Thursday peaceful demonstration, we take this opportunity to recognise the Asian community's sensible decision to reprimand Mehta over Mabira. http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/14/559696 Racial violence unforgivable Friday, 13th April, 2007 E-mail article Print article THE violence against the Asian community, resulting in one Asian killed is unforgivable. It has led to the loss of life and the destruction of property of innocent people. It has diverted a noble cause into a racial one. And it has allowed a genuine environmental concern to be hijacked by thugs and violent racists. The finger-pointing of who is responsible has already started. Surely, the organisers carry a responsibility. They should have warned and acted against racist slogans displayed on placards. Banners saying 'Asians should go' or 'For every tree cut, five Indians dead' clearly and directly targeted people solely for belonging to a particular group - the definition of genocide. Irresponsible politicians who incited rather than calmed down the crowds are also to blame. The fact that some MPs attempted to defy Police instructions by marching onto Kampala Road, forcing the Police to use teargas, unnecessarily stirred up emotions. Threatening statements by FDC shadow minister for environment, Beatrice Anywar Atim, were contributing factors. "We are warning Mehta that they should just withdraw their interest in the forest, otherwise we shall cut them before they cut the trees," she said during a press conference at Parliament on Thursday. It is too soon for Ugandans to have forgotten what happened next door, in Rwanda, when one million Tutsis were slaughtered in just 100 days. It is wrong to blame one person's action on a group, because not every member of that group would necessarily subscribe to that individual's beliefs. The head of the Indian community in Uganda even says their position is that Mabira forest should not be given to Mehta. So why target Indians? The debate on Mabira Forest is a healthy one. It is a debate about environment versus development - and ultimately about striking a balance between the two. It is unfortunate that some people, for political, racial or economic reasons, allowed this cause to be betrayed. http://www.indiaenews.com/africa/20070415/47449.htm Suspected killers of an Indian arrested in Uganda >From correspondents in Africa, 07:34 PM IST The Ugandan police have arrested four people on suspicion of killing an Indian during Thursday's violent protests over a proposed forest giveaway. Deval Rawal, a 24-year-old Indian in Uganda, was beaten to death in downtown Kampala, when a peaceful demonstration turned into a riot over the proposed giveaway of Mabira forest to an Indian-run sugar plant for sugarcane plantation. At least 21 protesters including four suspects related to the murder have been arrested. 'We arrested them on Friday night after video footage and photos showed them performing the grisly act,' a senior police source was quoted by Sunday Vision as saying. 'They admitted that they battered Rawal to death.' The suspects are being detained at Kampala's Central Police Station. Some of those arrested during and immediately after the riots have been released after video recordings showed they were not involved in the violence. 'During the riots we picked people left and right. The number we are giving you now are people who are in detention with specific charges,' said Edward Ochom, Kampala Extra Police Chief, adding that the Police had intensified the hunt for the perpetrators. 'Anybody who was involved, whether by breaking into shops, stealing motorcycles, inciting the masses or planning violence will be arrested,' he said. Those detained are due to appear in court on Monday to face charges of murder, destruction and inciting violence. There were signs of confidence returning as some businessmen reopened their shops and banks Saturday. Representatives of the Indian community decided to reopen their businesses after Security Minister Amama Mbabazi and Police Chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura convinced them Friday about their safety. Following Rawal's death, the Indian community had threatened to go on a two-week strike through closure of all their businesses, including schools and hospitals. They also wanted to refuse paying taxes as a way of expressing their displeasure. The plan was, however, dropped after MP Tanna Singh and Kampala City Council Councillor Pradip Karia intervened. http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/12/559701 Police arrest Mabira demo leaders Friday, 13th April, 2007 E-mail article Print article Musisi, Ssaka and Ahimbisibwe plead innocence after their arrest over the theft of motorbikes By Charles Etukuri And Steven Candia THE Vice-President of the Uganda Young Democrats, Fred Mukasa Mbidde, and the Chairman of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), Issa Ssekito, were arrested yesterday in connection with Thursday's riots and are to be charged with murder, the Police announced. The two were picked up on Friday morning and were being interrogated most of the day at the Kampala Central Police Station. Efforts to have them charged failed as the Buganda Road court had already closed. "They have been arrested and when we got them to court, it was too late. So they are appearing on Monday on murder charges," Kampala Police chief Edward Ochom told The New Vision. Last evening, the LC1 chairman of Makerere Kivuli, Badru Bwanika, joined the two others. He also faces charges of murder. The Police have vowed to pursue and arrest whoever was involved in the violence, irrespective of their positions or social standing. They singled out some MPs, especially from the opposition, for organising and inciting the public. The politicians, the Police said, had stirred up public sentiments against the Asian community, especially Indians, which culminated in the violence in which one person was stoned and beaten to death and several others were injured. A top level police committee, headed by deputy director of CID Okoth Ochola, was formed to investigate the events. In addition, the Police summoned by telephone nine politicians, among them Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago and Kitgum Woman MP Beatrice Atim Anywar. Lukwago confirmed they had been called but he said that as MPs, they could only be summoned through the speaker of parliament. Meanwhile, some of the property looted during the riots has been recovered. The Katwe Police displayed 11 out of 12 motorcycles stolen from Leader Uganda Ltd. stores in Katwe Wansi, owned by a Chinese national. "We have the motorcycles and arrested three people," Katwe CID chief, Cosmas Ruganzu, said. The Police identified the three suspects as Geoffrey Musisi, Richard Saka and Alias Ahimbisibwe. Earlier on Friday, security in Kampala city and in Lugazi town, where the Mehta sugar factory is located, had been stepped up. The Democratic Party had planned an unauthorised demonstration at Mabira Forest but the plan flopped. Heavily armed policemen, backed by military police and the UPDF, were seen patrolling the area around the Mehta sugar cane plantations. The gates leading to the SCOUL sugar factory were tightly guarded by police and Special Police Constables, and everyone entering was subjected to a thorough search. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... NOTE: Rustication refers to suspension from the university. University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Things are not good for radical minded ones at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. In August 2007 students were rusticated from the University for spearheading a protest held in September 2005. Ordinarily, no one would expect that the management of the University would refer to such an event to perpetuate their evil. But the management in her objective will to deal with people of like-minds who have "given them much problems" in order to protect the rights of students and the poor masses against exploitation, felt someone must bear some pains for their contributions to the Students' Union Movement in the University. It must be emphasized that this is the approach the university authority has been employing to subdue the consciousness of students on the campus. Today the university is no more than a primary school where students are discouraged to do things on their own. We (members of the left) have told them times without numbers that protest, demonstration, and independent students' unionism are our right, and should not be alieniated from us. Student activists are now been expelled, rusticated, academically witch-hunted etc. for participating in students activities. It is that pathetic. Ironically in UI you will find that students who commit serious criminal offences (such as rape, murder attempt etc.) are not even given up to the "punishment" we activists are given.Their goal is clear: to demolish all possible class antagonist tendencies and instill terrible fear in students who may want to develop such. The same acts that are crushing UI students movement have started too in the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) located in Osun State, Nigeria. Just last month the management announced that it had proscribed the Students' Union. A statement that followed a brutal attack on the entirety of the students by the Mobile police mixed with military men to stop a peaceful student demonstration demanding a week exam date extention. Since last month the school authority had been stampeding and denying the Students' popularly elected Student's Union leadership particularly the student's Union president known as "Saburi"- Of course this has not stopped the usual radical activities of the leadership instead it had been further popularised. The management seeing this as a great threat, resorted not only to media rhetoric of disbandment and dissolution but also selective "criminal" victimisation and witch-hunting to the extent of publicly placing a prize on the Union Executive members for their discovery. The school has promised N250,000 for anyone with vital information about these "unscrupulous elements". The University of Ibadan case still remains. Perhaps we we can jointly organised a campaign/ rally/ syposium/ demostration/ programme for the rights to Independent Students' Union and a halt to the victimisation of our comrades, and right to free and quality education at all levels which will cut accross all of these institutions. = __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages ------ >From the African anarchism list to send a message email anarchy_africa at yahoogroups.com http://struggle.ws/africa.html Find out about others on the list and add your info in the polls and bookmarks sections http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anarchy_africa Change settings via the Web (Yahoo! Students Demo in Jerusalem: Thousands Of Militant Protesters demand Right to Educ. http://www.marxist.com/university-students-demonstration-jerusalem200407.htm University Students' Demonstration in Jerusalem: Thousands of Militant Protesters Demand the Right to Education By Yehuda Stern in Jerusalem Friday, 20 April 2007 On April 18, thousands of Israeli students came out to express their opposition to the Shochat Committee, a body set up by the state in order to push through its agenda of raising university tuition. Initially 2000 protesters came, but the demonstration eventually grew to around 5000 people. This very militant and, in the conditions of Israeli political activity, quite large demonstration, expresses a mood that has been a long time in the making. We have been constantly writing and explaining that the great majority of Israeli society is opposed to the economic policies of the Olmert government, which, between the Prime Minister's 2% approval rating and the 1% approval rating of Amir Peretz, the Minister of War and the chairman of the junior partner of the coalition government, really has no base of support in society. While the struggle of the workers may have ebbed in the most recent period, the students and teachers are escalating theirs. The student movement in Israel has in general been historically more conservative than even that of the trade unions. The actions of the students, which began almost two weeks ago with a strike which now encompasses the lecturers' union as well, show the extent of opposition to Olmert's policies. Background to the demonstration and strike In October of 2006, following protest against the Olmert government's intention to cut the Education Ministry's budget by 1.2 billion shekels (approx. 215 million Euro), the Ministries of Education and Finance set up the Shochat Committee, headed by former right-wing Labour MK Abraham Shochat. Its stated aim was to find ways to prevent this cut. In reality, given Shochat's political allegiances, there was never any doubt that he would recommend raising tuition. University students and faculty members were not represented in any way on the committee, only on the subcommittees. In Israel there is an old maxim that whenever the government wishes to "bury" an issue, it sets up a committee. This time around the situation was probably even worse - the government set up the committee to further its own agenda of making the students and the masses in general pay for its economic troubles. It followed the Winograd Committee, which actually proposed the lowering of tuition, though by such a low sum that it would have hardly changed anything. Still, it is clear that the government was looking for a way to justify its policy from a "professional" and "economic" point of view. Student opposition and protest against the Committee began at its very inception, but the students have had enough. Almost two weeks ago, they called an indefinite strike, demanding the dissolution of the committee and the lowering of tuition. Naturally, these demands have fallen on deaf ears. That is why the strike in front of Olmert's home was called. The demonstration in Jerusalem At first the demonstration was very quiet, and it seemed like only a few hundreds were present. However, about an hour and a half afterwards, the entire part of the street in the area of the Prime Minister's home was flooded with protesters, carrying signs with slogans such as "With deep sorrow we announce the death of Education", "The Slaughter Committee" and "We Are Being Slaughtered" (the last two are a play on Shochat's name, which comes from the same root as "to slaughter"). The demonstrators were demanding free higher education to all, and many (if not the majority) raised slogans demanding free higher education and the linking up of their struggle with those of the lecturers, teachers, and workers. This is an excellent example of the radicalization of a layer of activists that is mostly petty-bourgeois in its social makeup. Even the capitalist media quoted the students as putting forward the slogan: "Olmert is corrupt, we shall not rest until he falls". After several speeches by student activists and by Dov Chanin, a Hadash (Communist Party front) MK, the demonstration turned into a march. However, the march, which was heading (it seems) downtown, was blocked by police forces, and instead the demonstrators continued the protest at Independence Park. At this point there were at least 5000 protesters there. A while afterwards the protesters dispersed, but there was a marked feeling of very inspiring militancy at the march. The specter of police repression Although the demonstration was not violent by any means, nor did it have any intention of being so, and despite the fact that the student movement has not yet started to outgrow its reformist phase, very large police forces were present at the demonstration, showing the extent to which the state fears any progressive movement. Far from securing the demonstration, the massive police presence seemed to be an attempt at provoking greater repression of the movement. Reports of police stopping students' buses on their way to the demonstration and examining protesters' belongings and vehicle trunks were all over the capitalist media, and many police officers stopped every protester on his way to the demonstration in order to look for anything they considered dangerous. After the march began, many policemen, including riot police and policemen on horseback blocked the march from going further down its path. A police helicopter was patrolling the skies, and a heavy vehicle with a water cannon on top of it could be seen further up the road from where the protesters were stopped. Later on, in the park, policemen were still in the area in great numbers. The police were obviously looking for a provocation when it stopped the march, but luckily the students did not give in to this foul attempt to break them. This is a warning to all student activists: capitalism in Israel cannot stand even the most elementary democratic demands of the students' movement. At one point or another, if the struggle does not spread, police repression will set in. In many cases the police, in other countries but in Israel as well, had its own agents impersonating as protesters and provoked the policemen into repressing the movement. In the end, there will come a point when simply being careful or peaceful just won't do. The way forward Granted, the strike and demonstration are steps in the right direction. That the lecturers and teachers have joined the students in their strike is excellent as well. But in order to win anything, the ruling class must be hurt in the only place it cares about: its profits. This none of the above mentioned groups can do, no matter what numbers or what level of militancy is displayed. The orientation must be towards the working class. The workers, especially those organized in the Histadrut, wish to bring down the Olmert government. They are looking for an alternative. The workers of the local councils have not been paid for months, some for years. They too have children who will one day want to study at the universities - some are parents to students. They have every reason to support the struggle of the students. On the other hand there are the students themselves, many of whom work part-time or full-time jobs in order to pay their already ridiculously high tuition. They certainly have an interest as well in the struggle of the workers, including the teachers. They also have an interest in putting an end to the bloody occupation of Palestine, which puts millions of innocent people in virtual ghettos, provokes terrorism, and gives the government an excuse to cut all other budgets for the sake of "security" and for funding the criminal enterprise of the settlements. This interest of the students, teachers, and workers to struggle transcends all ethnic, national, or religious interests: it is the interest of the masses - just as the interests of the state are the interests of the ruling class. A 24-hour general strike of the entire workforce, with the support of the teachers and students, with councils of action established at every university and workplace in order to prevent the strike from being manipulated like the last general strike, will ensure victory over the Olmert government - a victory which will galvanize all of society to the cause of the working class and socialism. No to the right-wing government of Olmert! No to the Shochat Committee! For free education for all, from kindergarten to university! Labor Party out of the Government! They do not have any moral standing anymore, of what little they had. All their murdering of innocent people, women, children and elderly is a sacrifice in the name of fighting 'terror'. Meanwhile, they the only regimes who are terrorizing all the world. They never will be satisfied with what they have; they need to get more and more. They will get more soon from resistance everywhere in answer to their awakening of colonization again, their globalization of financial power and oppression of peoples all over the world. They will see us get closer in our efforts to stand together against injustice, capitalism and hegemony. We need to show the regimes all over the world, that we the people, stand together and that we are ready to fight for justice, peace and social rights for all people. The USA and Israel are the worst in their immoral and absolutely unacceptable behavior. But the other western countries, especially Europe, are loosing their right to tell all people all over the world anything about democracy and law, because they are loosing them more and more and denying freedom of speech and other democratic rights for their citizens. What we hear now, day after day, from those regimes is undemocratic and it undoes all the most important advances that have been built up over the centuries. Let us stand up for the rights of all people. Let us show them our unity and let us show them that we are the people and that they have to serve us, not vice versa. Do not be silent anymore, while they are killing our brothers and sisters. Do not be silent anymore, while they are satiating their big stomachs, and only theirs. Do not let them ruin our world! The titles of the document 1. The actual Situation of the nation and the necessity of resistance The Arab and Islamic World as well as the majority of humanity are suffering under hatred, under catastrophes, under bloody massacres and under occupation and oppression since the violation of the first square foot of the soil of Palestine by the Zionist terrorist bands beginning at the end of the 19th century. Since that time the different forces of good and righteousness from within the Arab world have struggled to defend their legitimate rights. First of all the resistance forces of the Arab people have struggled against the violation and occupation by the enemy in Palestine, in Syria, in Lebanon and in Iraq, and against the forces of injustice, of occupation and of aggression that characterize the Zionist entity. That entity is performing a global war of expelling people and scattering them and physically liquidating them. It is a war of demolition of houses and territories, and a war of collective annihilation, supported by all material, personal, financial and political means available of the imperialistic forces from the USA. It is without respect for the feelings and rights of people. It is defying international laws and norms, and trying to dictate occupation and disrupting the status-quo by means of force and oppression and by depriving the owners of the land of their legitimate rights, by oppressing and expelling the people, by dishonoring their heavenly sanctuaries and by destroying and removing their cultural places and by falsifying their history and culture 2. The present Situation and the challenges of our time The enemies are still forging the final chains in their infernal scheme and barbaric project. Their goal comprises the liquidation of the resistance movement that is defending the legitimate rights of people to existence, freedom and sovereignty. Their goal is to liquidate and terminate any kind of resistance within the country and abroad; their insults, aggression and targets have been widened to stir global resistance. The enemies do not content themselves with the oppression and discrimination campaigns against them, they are working toward enclosing, dividing and isolating them and to silencing even their voices to prevent them even from crying out against aggression and injustice. They are also disrupting and attacking every effort to let the people live in dignity and peace at the level of equal human and political rights, alongside the people of the world who are struggling for independence, for the right of self-determination and for their sovereignty over their resources. Facing these facts, it is a historic and principal responsibility of the whole world to oppose occupation, violation, injustice and oppression. 3. The general goals and the fixed principles The fixed principles that constitute the basis and the spirit of the planned First Beirut International Arab Social Forum Congress in Lebanon are as follows: 1: A wider meeting of the Alliance of the popular world to confront terrorism and to confront the American-Zionist to lift their sword of terrorism. It is to confront the American Zionists hanging on the necks of the Palestinian people. It is to help the Iraqi and Arab and Islamic communities and religious minorities, ethnic and national groups, to repeal the laws that allow human rights and public freedoms to be removed, and those which allow personal and religious punishments, intimidation and starvation. And it is to close all political and ethnic detention camps and occupation prisons. 2: To begin our struggle to stop the so-called economic reforms carried out by privatization and globalization of the economy. We will work towards the elimination of the 'settlement' device in governance and development. And we will struggle for social freedom in order to build truly democratic institutions and provide rehabilitation opportunities for development. We will strive to end all forms of terrorism, including that inherent in legislation, democracy and the imposition of the ban on strikes, demonstrations and activities of trade unions. We will try to end assassination, torture, rape, abduction and the bans on organizing political parties and organizations. And we will continue our struggle to end all the various forms of violations of national sovereignty practiced by the United States. 3: To strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, love and ties to nationalism and to find better ways to manage efforts to draft a united agreement to support the steadfastness of oppressed peoples and groups. And to establish the first popular global dialogue between Arabs, Muslims and Christians on the basis of equality and mutual respect, and to promote the natural rights of nations to equality in the international councils and bodies working under all international legal frameworks. 3: To focus international public opinion on what is happening in the land of Palestine and Iraq, suffering the bloodiest massacres and practices, prohibited by international law, where the two peoples are kept in a high-walled prison by the American and Zionist machines of war and destruction, genocide and extermination. And we aim to remove all traces of ignorance and intellectual shortcomings and defects outstanding in our minds about this global fact about Palestine, which is the essence of the conflict in the Arab and Islamic world. 4: To expose the crimes and inhuman practices and the repression against the political and social systems of the host and to expose collaboration and participation in the crime of killing the Palestinian and Iraqi people. To work to bring out viewpoints of those on the side of right and in the face of injustice and aggression, to support the global march towards a just peace and brotherhood among peoples. And to create a global forum of intellectual and cultural alliances to confront this social hegemony and domination 5: To continue to strive for the final version of the birth of the Resistance Front for peaceful global standards against hegemony 6: To pledge to struggle against imperialist globalization and the American and Zionist hegemony, with all the forces that take a stand up to the horror caused by this new aggressive war against humanity. We commit ourselves to stand firmly and sincerely with the poor people that are the greatest victims of globalization and Zionist racism, and to unite with them in the struggle against the looting American and Zionist organizers and their colonial wars all over the world. 6: To commit ourselves to strongly oppose the disastrous, inhumane effects of poverty on society which destroy the livelihoods of people and the environment; to oppose the wastefulness of over- consumption and factory farming and to oppose the elimination of the cultural life of the people. And we pledge to struggle against violation of the national sovereignty of countries, especially their vulnerable and oppressed, which is a comprehensive aggression on their sovereignty. They are exposed to massive attack by the forces of imperialist globalization and its institutions like, for example: the World Bank the IMF, the WTO and others, as well as governments and, in particular, the terrorist governments in Washington and Tel Aviv. We pledge to struggle for the cancellation of all third world debt from authoritarian agencies 7: To commit ourselves to the struggle against the growing fascist attacks of ruling gangs in the world, provoking the histrionics of sectarian passions and conflicts between different communities In particular, we commit to struggle against the ideas and racist tendencies and others operating a fascist ideology of the new environment in various regions of the world. And we pledge to fight shoulder to shoulder with the people of various countries, which suffer from the American military presence 8: To struggle for the release of all political detainees imprisoned by the United States and Israel and other dictatorial regimes unconditionally following American policy. And we will begin the struggle for the immediate cancellation of all unequal treaties and conventions and agreements between military forces of evil and terrorism, American and Israeli groups and countries in the world. We will: a) Struggle for the unity of Iraq's territory and people and support the heroic resistance of the noble soles and legitimate representatives of the Iraqi people and the removal of American and other foreign occupation and the preservation of Arabism and Holy shrines as a sacred national task b) Support the al-Aqsa Intifada and the Palestinian resistance, the brave legitimate resistance against the usurping Zionist racist entity which has refused to transfer the land to permanent normal statehood acceptable to the Arab world, and the dismantling of settlement occupation of the national and other humanitarian duties c) Resist foreign trusteeship over Lebanon and preserve the resistance of the great and historic victory as a strategic basis for coping with the forces of hegemony d) Support the heroic resistance of Somalia and the Arab identity which refused to intervene in the international trusteeship in the Sudan e) Stay the sword of American and Zionist terror raised over the neck of our people and families within the whole countries of our nation and in the countries of immigration abroad. f) Ininitiate the first popular international dialogue, led by a wide popular partnership based on mutual respect and alliance to secure and consolidate the rights of the Palestinian and Iraqi victims and to support the building of equal relations of partnership and of just peace in the world and to establish a global resistance circle within the world wide united front to oppose and face the terrorist American Zionist alliance and hegemony. g) Send a clear message to whom it may concern that we are deeply related to the Palestinians and Iraqis and to their countries and that we are well concerned with the daily suffering of the people and their pleas and their disrespected rights, primarily within Palestine and Iraq, and that we are directly concerned with supporting them to regain their independence, freedom and full and complete sovereignty over their countries and their resources 4.
