As always, when writing to prisoners, bear in mind that all mail is lkely to be read by the authorities, so don't compromise your security or that of others, and don't vent your spleen on the guards - it's not you that's locked-up.

They will warn you then silence you if you talk about Iraq, or say disturbing things, but your initial protest statement will be seen by the recruiters and the young kids (not all are kids, but there is a surprising number of 13-16 year old kids there) who go there to look for a "job".
And you can just go back later (most people have dynamically assigned ip addresses, so they don't know you from the last time, and of course, use a different nickname)
I suggest starting easy, just asking questions like a recruit would. Like "I heard the VA hospitals are under funded, what's up with that?"
It is also good to see what the people are saying. I would like to see one day there are so many people asking challenging questions, or saying straight-forward statements of opposition to this insane war that the chat room is just shut down.
One more recruiting "office" shut down, imagine, it will happen.

In the night of 15th and 16th April the Pakistani dictatorship in a brutal crackdown arrested thousands of PPP workers who were preparing to hold a mass rally to welcome Asif Ali Zardari, spouse of the PPP Chairperson at Lahore airport.
The crack down had started several days earlier. Several trains from Karachi and other parts of the Sindh were cancelled and borders of the Punjab province were sealed. This has exposed the so-called enlightened moderation of the Musharaf dictatorship which is a close ally of US and British imperialism.
This savage repression also exposed the fragile nature of this regime. It is terrified of a mass explosion due to its drastic anti-working class and anti-people policies being carried out on the behest of the IMF and the World Bank. The regime was afraid that this welcome rally might become the starting point of the movement that could lead to the overthrow of this pro-imperialist dictatorship.
Comrade Manzoor Ahmed, president of the PTUDC and Member of Parliament, was arrested along with several other PPP MPs as they were on their way to Lahore airport in the early hours of Saturday April 16. Other MPs who were arrested are CH. Aitizaz Ehsan, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Imtiaz Safdar, Shamshad Sattar, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Qamar-uz-Zaman Kaira, Zulfiqar Ali Gondal, Tasneem Ahmed Qureshi, Nayyer Bukhari, Zamurrad Khan, Shehry Rehman, Mutaza Satti, Fouzia Habib, Samina Khalid Ghorki, Shagufta Bukhari, Naheed Khan, Safder Abbasi and many others. The veteran PPP left wing leader Ghulam Abbas was also arrested. Some female parliamentarians including Fozia Malik, Ferzana Raja, and Uzma Bukhari were severely beaten up by the police and are now hospitalized due to their injuries.
Such is the ruthless repression of this regime that even small schoolchildren aged 8, 9 and 10 have been arrested in this crack down. The police custody cells are so crowded that the detainees are forced to stand up, as there is no room to sit. This is an act of cowardice and shows that the regime is on its last legs. Hence the desperate attempt to crush a rising tide of political revolt.
Comrade Manzoor Ahmed and other PPP leaders have vowed to continue the struggle till the overthrow of this regime and the rotten capitalist system it defends and represent. In their message from prison these parliamentarians have said that such brutal acts cannot deter them, but paradoxically will expose the real character of this regime and provoke a revolutionary upsurge.
They appealed to the workers, youth, and masses to support them in this episode of class struggle being launched in Pakistan. An Injury to One is An Injury to All!
We appeal to all our supporters and sympathisers, trade union activists, party activists around the world to mobilise protest actions. Phone your local Pakistani embassies, organise pickets, raise the issue inside your local labour movement organisations. Do not leave your Pakistani comrades in these terrible conditions without doing everything in your power to stop this brutal regime.

As most of you know, Willie Fontenot was recently forced out of his job
as the environmental community liaison for the Louisiana Attorney
General's Office after 27 years of public service. Fontenot's "crime"
was assisting my students who were part of an Antioch New England
Graduate School field studies course on environmental justice issues in
Louisiana. The students' "crime?" They stood on a public sidewalk and
took pictures of ExxonMobil's petrochemical facility in Baton
Rouge--similar to the pictures of the facility published in
ExxonMobil's annual report. Almost immediately, my students, my
co-leader, and Willie were detained, lied to, and threatened by
off-duty police officials working for ExxonMobil. On the next day,
these ExxonMobil "rent-a-cops" complained to Attorney General Foti
about Willie Fontenot's outspoken support of the legal rights of my
students. Two weeks later, and without warning, Fontenot was given the
choice of retiring immediately or face being fired without benefits.
I am asking you to join a national letter writing campaign to urge
Attorney General Foti rehire Willie Fontenot. This campaign has already
pressured Charles Foti to have a meeting with Willie Fontenot on April
27. Foti is now planning on meeting with Willie Fontenot again in two
weeks to negotiate some resolution to this controversy. Please write an
email to the Attorney General to urge him to rehire Fontenot at their
next meeting. Write to the AG's spokesperson (wartellek at ag.state.la.us)
and send a copy to the lieutenant governor (ltgove at crt.state.la.us).

after an ExxonMobil employee complained about Mr. Fontenot assisting a

concerned about this unjust dismissal of Mr. Fontenot, a man who has
provided exemplary public service to the people of Louisiana through
the Attorney General's Office for 27 years.
While you may not have been aware of the circumstances behind Mr.
Fontenot's dismissal, it is your responsibility to offer to reinstate
Mr. Fontenot to his position immediately. I also urge you to institute
a program to train corporate security guards, as well local law
enforcement officers who moonlight as security guards, to ensure that
they do not lie to, threaten, and needlessly detain students engaging
in legal research activities.
I urge you to publicly stand up for what is right, reinstate Willie
Fontenot to his job, and make it clear that the corporate harassment of
students, academics, journalists, and community members will not be
tolerated in Louisiana. You have an opportunity to exert strong,
ethical leadership here and be a national role model of courageous

Your help needed!
You won't believe this!
Every person's vehicle who was protesting Terri's MURDER, had their
car towed from the parking lot. They were being targeted because
they were in front of the hospital.
ALERT: As you know, Terri Schindler-Schiavo has passed
away, the victim of an out-of-control tyrannical judiciary,
politicians who couldn't or wouldn't stop the judges, and
a man who had abandoned his wife long ago and shouldn't
have even been allowed to stay as her guardian.
The crowds outside Terri's hospice in Pinellas Park,
Florida, are all going home, weary from the battle. While
Terri is gone now, we still live to fight another day --
and we WILL fight the judicial tyrants, to honor the memory
of Terri. We're already formulating battle plans to move
ahead in the War on Judicial Tyranny.
But there's one more battle in Pinellas Park that needs to
be fought... one more injustice that needs to be righted,
on behalf of so many people that sacrificed so much to
come and support Terri.
Supporters of Terri Schiavo have been RIPPED OFF
of over $20,000 -- and we need to STOP this financial
assault on free speech, NOW.
Thousands of Terri Schiavo supporters have made their
pilgrimage to Pinellas Park, Florida over the past few
weeks to peacefully assemble and pray. Local police
frequently directed them to park in the large Winn-Dixie
Supermarket parking lot across the street from the Woodside
Hospice. It was literally a "Winn-win" situation.
Demonstrators, thirsty from the hot Florida sun, purchased
water and Gatorade by the truckloads from Winn-Dixie and
surrounding retailers. The economy in Woodside Hospice
enclave never looked so good. That was until TODAY, when
dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Schiavo supporters walked out
of Winn-Dixie to their cars, only to find that their cars
had VANISHED.
Why? Because EVK Enterprises, Inc., the property management
company renting space to Winn-Dixie, began towing cars with
a redemption fee of $161 PER CAR. An estimated 150 cars
were towed, for fees in excess of $20,000 -- ALL IN CASH!
One Terri supporter, Jerry McGlothlin, purchased retail
products at the Winn-Dixie shopping center, from the CVS
Pharmacy and the auto parts store, and left two shopping
bags in his front seat in plain sight before he walked
across the street briefly to the front of the Woodside
Hospice, out of respect to Terri Schiavo. Then he walked
back across the street and purchased $148.13 in groceries
at Winn-Dixie, since he had a scheduled 8 day stay in St.
Petersburg, visiting his nephew. Jerry then returned to an
empty space where his car had been. After five hours of
wrangling with the Winn-Dixie store manager, the management
company and several people in Winn-Dixie's corporate
headquarters to help him get his car returned, not a single
person lifted so much as a finger to help. He eventually
had no choice but to pay to retrieve his car.
Said McGlothlin, "When I showed Winn-Dixie's store manager,
John Brengle, my receipt for over $140 in groceries, and
asked for my car back, he outright refused to help and
shifted blame to the management company. I asked him
politely four separate times during various stages of my
five hour ordeal of being stranded without a car, only to
have Manager Brengle refuse all four times. The management
company needed just one single call from Brengle to stop
the towing, but Brengle insisted on being complicit and
doing nothing. I tried going over his head, calling several
people at Winn-Dixie's regional and national headquarters,
and got no help whatsoever. It seemed that top management
had already taken sides on the Schiavo matter, regardless
of how much money people spent with Winn-Dixie."
Selective enforcement was the order of the day in the
Winn-Dixie parking lot. Regardless of the size of a purchase
(in McGlothlin's case he made 3 purchases in three of the
stores in the shopping center, totaling over $200), as long
as anyone crossed the street to show support of Terri
Schiavo, even for 10 minutes, they got towed by "security"
forces who monitored who crossed the street. Emotions
apparently ran so high from the anti-Schiavo camp that there
appeared to be no consideration whatsoever made to the fact
that they were towing patrons of Winn-Dixie.
(NOTE: At the main entrance to the Winn-Dixie on the 66th
Street side, there was a "No protest parking please" sign
that covered a second sign stating that "unauthorized"
vehicles will be towed at owner's expense by Yoho's Towing.
Ordinarily a reasonable observer would not consider actual
PATRONS of Winn-Dixie as being "unauthorized," but then
again, this is the heated Schiavo debate, and nothing about
it seems ordinary.)
One woman was crying hysterically at the car pound, Yoho's
Towing; another man was from Canada without enough American
money. But the pattern was always the same: No mercy from
the a foul-mouthed woman working there named Danielle, who
incessantly used the "F" word to complaining "customers,"
even when young children were present.
One man was so incensed over having his car towed after
purchasing water at Winn-Dixie that he spent hours telling
his plight in front of the store to anyone who would listen.
Eventually police either arrested him or convinced him to
leave.
TAKE ACTION: This is OUTRAGEOUS. It's one thing for owners
of private property to post towing notices for unauthorized
vehicles; it's another thing to deliberately TARGET
protesters, EVEN THOUGH they're patrons of the stores on
that property.
These people need to "feel the heat" in order to "see the
light". So it's up to US to apply that heat. There's several
ways you can complain about this outrageous behavior -- but
keep one thing in mind... BE VERY POLITE. Do NOT give them
any excuse to file complaints against YOU!
1) Call Winn-Dixie's store #681 manager, John Brengle, at
727-541-2070. Inform him of your feelings about allowing the
towing of the cars of Terri Schiavo supporters, even though
they were obviously patrons of the Winn-Dixie and other
stores on that property. You can also call Winn-Dixie
corporate headquarters to complain at 866-946-6349, or send
a message at http://www.winndixie.com/comments/main.asp .
2) Call EVK Enterprises, Inc., the property management
company renting space to Winn-Dixie, at 727-821-4989. Inform
them of your feelings about their new decision to tow the
cars of Terri Schiavo's supporters, even though they were
obviously patrons of the Winn-Dixie and other stores on that
property. You can also send an e-mail to them at

3) Call Robert Yoho Towing at 727-545-3596, and inform them
of your feelings about towing the cars of Terri Schiavo
supporters that were in the Winn-Dixie parking lot, even
though they were obviously patrons of the stores on that
property. Also let them know how you feel about their
employees cursing at people with small children.
4) One observer commented that it would be interesting to
know if the IRS would ever see this spike in sales on the
tax returns of the small towing business, and whether there
might be some "kick-back" funds for stores or property owners.
The IRS offers a 10% finder's fee reward to citizens who give
anonymous tips of likely tax fraud -- their number is
800-829-0433.
Once more, let me remind you: BE VERY POLITE. Do NOT give
them any excuse to file complaints against YOU!

Last September, Lancaster University (north west England) hosted a national "corporate venturing" conference - which is basically an event for large multinational companies to network and work out how to exploit / sponsor academic research. Amongst those present were Shell, BAe systems, Rolls Royce (both arms manufacturers), Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, and Du Pont (involved in GM technology and responsible for the 'terminator' gene which makes seeds infertile, amongst other things).
6 people entered the conference to air their opposition to the commercialisation of research and to the University's links with multinational companies. Security were called to evict the students. The police turned up and informed the university that the 6 were doing nothing wrong.
Five months later the six students received a court summons for aggravated trespass and face up to 3 months in jail if convicted. The University is adamant that an example should be made of these students and does not want to jeopardise future corporate venturing get togethers to be hosted by Lancaster. The summons has only been issued because the University is insisting on it. Unlike criminal prosecutions where the state decideds who to prosecute, this case cannot be heard without the University's insistence.

University Clampdown on Campus Protest
Lancaster University has brought charges against 6 students and
graduates after a peaceful protest against Arms Dealers and GM Companies
on campus.
In a move that is being watched by other universities and colleges,
Lancaster University is trying to silence criticism of its controversial
links with multinational corporations. If Lancaster Uni gets away with
this then we can expect similar strong arm tactics to silence critical
students everywhere!
The six students and members of the local community are facing charges
of Aggravated Trespass for going into a lecture theatre to explain their
opposition and hand out leaflets to delegates at a networking meeting
for large companies (mainly involved in the defence industries, but also
including GM, electronics and oil interests) and academic researchers.
They face up to three months in jail.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
The Supporters Group is asking campaigners everywhere to:
* WRITE TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR of Lancaster University - to ask him to
DROP THE CHARGES against the six, and to introduce a PROPER FREEDOM OF
SPEECH policy that doesn't allow the university to intimidate dissenting
voices.

Please demand the resignation of Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh for
his racist comments against Muslim made at a recent event in Toronto. Such
comments do not reflect Canadian values and must not be tolerated.

Hon. Pierre Pettigrew,
Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh recently stated that "most terrorists
today are Muslims and that the majority of Muslims support extremism." These
comments were made at the Daniel Pearl Dialogue for Muslim-Jewish
Understanding, held at the Temple Har Zion Synagogue in Toronto and
sponsored by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center.
In December of last year, a similar speech was made by an invited keynote
speaker at a conference also sponsored by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal
Center and held at the University of Toronto. At that event, the speaker
stated that "Islamic terrorism is based on Islam," and that Islam was
"immoderate" and "totalitarian."
In view of repeated speeches of this nature, I demand that you and your
department immediately censure Mr. Brosh. The comments foster hate and
bigotry against Canadian Muslims. Mr. Brosh's is an Israeli official in
Canada. His comments cannot be allowed to stand without a response from the
Canadian government.

Boycott Norm Stamper's "Breaking Rank" Book Tour

Norm Stamper was the Seattle Police Chief during the Seattle WTO riots in
1999. He has now reemerged to profit off his terrorist reign, by
presenting a fuzzy package of remorse. He is now trying to make more
capitalist profit off of his past terrorism through a book about his
"mistakes" during WTO. Guess what Stamper? We SAW your mistakes. The world
SAW your mistakes. We do not need your new spin-for-profit on it. I
implore all to BOYCOTT this man's book. In Stamper's new book, he says, "I
thought we were smarter than the anarchists. We weren't." Nothing has
changed. We are still smart enough to know not to give this man even one
more cent of money, even if he feigns some sort of new consciousness. Norm
Stamper and his police force terrorized my town with extreme,
indiscriminate war, and then had the nerve to label anarchists
"terrorists." I have not forgotten and I will not forgive.
Norm Stamper has a lot of nerve even stepping foot in my city of Seattle,
is how I feel. How DARE this man show up 6 years after the WTO riots he
led, and now try to soak Seattle citizens for money to see him give a talk
at Town Hall on June 9? How DARE this man try to feign victimhood,
himself, during the biggest street riots in US history in the last 20
years, and under his direct command?! How dare this man take personal
profit from writing a book like this? EVERY SINGLE CENT OF PROFIT FROM
STAMPER'S BOOK, "BREAKING RANK," SHOULD GO TO ANARCHIST SUPPORT AND LEGAL
FUNDS. I suggest a full-blown boycott of this man's work, every single
place he goes.
I recommend PROTESTS anywhere Stamper tries to show his face. I plan to
personally picket the Stamper talk at Town Hall this week, even if I have
to do it alone. There should be scenes of anarchists, and anyone who
values freedom in America, yelling "shame, shame, shame" anytime this man
tries to speak in public. There should be public speculation as to this
man's right to make capitalist profit off of him rioting on innocent
people in Seattle streets. Again, the ONLY way this could be okay would be
if Stamper donated every cent of profit he makes off WTO issues to
anarchist causes and legal funds. If he was doing speaking tours and
writing books to support the people he attacked and brutalized, his
VICTIMS, then I would feel differently. But we paid Stamper as a city
employee for his WTO riots, and we are now going to pay him again to tell
us how he screwed that up? I do not think so. He owes that to us for free.
I cannot put into words the disgust I have right now at the front cover of
the Seattle Weekly pushing this man's story in some kind of kind and
compassionate way, supporting his profit off of police terror, yet again.
I say we QUIT paying this guy. He has done enough damage to society. If he
wants to repent, let him do it for free. Or he can give his profits to
anarchist organizations he has wrongly defamed and physically assaulted in
the past. But I am not going to sit idly by and watch Stamper make profits
off of his terrorist reign during the 1999 WTO police state in Seattle.
I am also not enjoying the whole good cop, bad cop thing the media and
Stamper are trying to feed us with this. Stamper is not a bad cop who has
now gone good. All cops are bad, because cops are trying to enforce the
middle class white male American status quo VIOLENTLY on anyone who
threatens things like racism, patriarchy, classism, third world
exploitation aka "free trade," etc. Free speech is such a load of crap
when it comes to free assembly and speech, even on the street performer
level, in American streets. (The Pike Place Market in Seattle CHARGES its
street performers $30 a year for "free" speech rights somehow!) Police are
here to protect white car-driving, home-owning, business owners. Just look
at who fills the jails, that says it all right there. No words can erase
the reality of who fills the jails, and why.
I was violently rioted upon by the Seattle Police on June 2, 2003 at the
LEIU protests. What were we protesting? The Law Enforcement Intelligence
Unit's national conference in Seattle. This is a highly secretive police
organization. How did Seattle Police react to our nonviolent, permitted
protest? By containing us so we could not leave, then attacking us
indiscriminately with pepper spray, concussion grenades, nightsticks, and
more. How have things changed on Seattle streets since Stamper? THEY HAVE
NOT CHANGED AT ALL. So let Stamper go give private lessons to Seattle
Police about "what he learned" but do not go around touting Stamper as
some do-gooder who is "breaking ranks" in some radical manner, for going
on a book tour about his WTO glory days. If he learned something, he needs
to go share that with Seattle Police themselves, as they still riot and
are still unaccountable for their riots. I will testify first hand to
this, as a witness, regarding Seattle Police riots on March 22 and June 2,
2003.
My take on Stamper's book tour is that he is trying to repackage himself
as some kind, conscious man who now sees the error of his ways. That is
not good enough, Stamper. Especially not if you are taking personal
profits from the tour. Going out to make some more money off of citizens
for the terrorism of the WTO riots is not acceptable, period. As I have
said, Stamper is on a book tour. It is our duty to BOYCOTT this book, and
it is also our duty to keep public awareness in check on this man, by
protesting every venue he tries to speak at to make more money off of his
WTO terrorism on Seattle streets. In my opinion, Stamper is a criminal who
got away with his crimes, like the cops who beat Rodney King on tape but
somehow walked free. I have as much respect for those cops who beat Rodney
King, as I do for the cops who beat anarchists on Seattle streets in 1999,
Stamper included. I do not care how much remorse the Rodney King beater
cops now feel, and I do not give one damn about Stamper's "remorse"
either. When he donates all profits from this tour and book to anarchist
support and legal funds, I will then give him an ear.

I am saddened to see your company promoting Procter &
Gamble (P&G) (Red Siren competition:

It states on the back of Nicky Clarkeproduct bottle 'This product
has not been tested on animals.' Yet you team up with a company
(P&G) that poisons and kills animals for new cosmetic and
household products and chemical ingredients and even in the
development of its 'pet' food subsidiaries, Iams and Eukanuba.
Many of these tests have nothing to do with regulatory
requirements, and animal testing for cosmetics is not even
allowed in the UK!
Procter & Gamble's actions speak louder than its words:
* Just some of the tests P&G have been involved with in the past
include: skin irritancy tests for Oil of Ulay (now Olay); tests on
monkeys for tampons; and horrific research conducted at
notorious animal-testing laboratory, Huntingdon Life Sciences
(HLS), on a group of 48 monkeys for a nasal decongestant already
in use by human volunteers.
* P&G continue to test on animals for new household cleaning
and cosmetic products and for new chemical ingredients. The
tests they continue to conduct for cosmetic products and
ingredients have been effectively banned in the UK for several
years, and European Union Ministers voted last year to ban them
too!
* In 1987 P&G fought a shareholders' resolution that would have
eliminated product testing on animals for consumer and
household products.
* In 1989 P&G tried to launch a $17.5 million program to
convince US legislators, school children and the public that tests
designed to poison, blind, burn, mutilate and kill animals are
absolutely necessary and humane. This programme never got off
the ground, primarily because of the intense pressure and
opposition P&G received from animal advocates in the US - such
as In Defense of Animals (IDA) who jointly co-ordinate the Global
Boycott P&G campaigns with us (see: www.pandgkills.org)
* In 1990, Procter & Gamble lobbied against legislation to ban
the notorious Draize test (in which corrosive chemicals are put
directly into animals' eyes in California. This test has been roundly
denounced as cruel and inaccurate in providing information to
extrapolate to humans, and there are numerous superior
non-animal alternatives available.
* In 1999, Procter & Gamble announced that they would halt
animal testing on its current products. What they downplayed,
however, was the fact that testing would continue on
"new-to-the-world" products and products whose ingredients are
changed or altered. The announcement also exempted animal
tests for new chemical ingredients. Most animal tests are for
chemical ingredients, not end products.
* P&G's petfood subsidiary Iams/Eukanuba have conducted
painful, invasive and lethal experiments on cats, dogs and other
animals. In some of the most horrific research cats and dogs have
suffered and died due to surgically-induced kidney damage.
Severe allergies have been inflicted on husky puppies. Cats have
been killed in invasive abdominal experiments. We have
repeatedly asked Iams/P&G to say it will not conduct any more
experiments on any animal. They have consistently refused. See

not answered. These tests have nothing to do with regulatory
requirements and are purely designed to help market their
products.
* In 2002 a high-level internal memo was leaked which revealed
P&G executives to have even been secretly lobbying European
Governments to try to block a popular ban on testing cosmetics on
animals. The memo states: "Throughout the process it was
important that we were successful in keeping P&G out of the
media spotlight. It would be damaging to be seen as the company
lobbying to test on animals, against public opinion." See

* In March 2003 a new nine-month undercover investigation
conducted by US group People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals (PETA) has discovered harrowing neglect and suffering
endured by cats and dogs in IAMS-sponsored experiments. The
damning evidence confirms that IAMS' stated "research policy" is
nothing more than a sham designed to conceal shocking suffering
caused by IAMS experiments on animals. We have since made an
official complaint about Iams' statements to the Advertising
Standards Authority, who are currently conducting a formal

* In 2004 a P&G experiment killed 423 young rats. The creatures
were either castrated or forced through premature puberty through
the injection of the sex hormones such as testosterone. A series
of experiments then took place where the rats were repeatedly
injected with gender-altering chemicals that shrunk their sex
organs. After three weeks, all the animals were anaesthetised and
killed by having their necks broken, and their bodies and genitalia
dismembered to be weighed and analysed. Other scientists
criticised these kinds of tests, pointing to "major scientific
problems" with interpreting the results, and noting "severe animal
welfare concerns" due to "complicated procedures and repeated
injections". Yet there are several test tube methods for studying the
sex-altering effects of chemicals.
* Also in 2004 Procter & Gamble scientists sacrificed 160
animals to test the safety of sunflower oil-derived ethyl oleate, one
of the most common fatty acids found in nature. This test was
conducted despite the existence of previously published human
test figures showing that ethyl oleate is well-tolerated in the diet
and is very safe. Three animals were found dead during the
experiment. After thirteen weeks, the surviving rats were killed by
'exsanguination' - bleeding to death - and dismembered for
examination of their body

* Despite repeated demands from consumers, requests from its
own shareholders, and ever-increasing public pressure, P&G
refuses to stop its cruel and antiquated testing methods,
preferring instead to continue to issue self-serving propaganda
and meaningless rhetoric, while continuing to needlessly kill
thousands of animals.
Alternatives
Procter & Gamble spends millions of dollars to package itself as
a responsible, caring company, and claims to be a leader in the
development of alternatives to the use of animals in product
testing. But P&G refuses to put its money where its mouth is. In
1996 alone, P&G spent $5.1 billion on advertising. This stands in
stark contrast to the $64 million that P&G claims to have spent on
developing alternatives over a 14-year period! Despite its repeated
PR claims about being in the forefront of developing alternatives
and reducing product testing on animals, P&G's priorities seem
clear: in less than 5 days, P&G spends more on advertising than it
claims to have spent in 14 years on alternatives to painful and
lethal animal tests.
A recent example of an 'alternative' research programme
involved killing over four hundred animals to examine whether a
new animal test gave similar results to the one they had been
using that dates back to the 1930s. Both tests are unreliable and
crude in any case. The 'alternative' in this case was essentially the
same as the old test: it was still a lethal animal experiment! (see:

More than 600 companies manufacture safe and effective
products that are comparable to Procter & Gamble's without
testing them on animals. Companies with smaller budgets than
P&G have been able to develop alternatives to animals while
showing a true commitment to eliminating animal testing.
There are NO requirements from governments that cosmetics
and personal care products be tested on animals. The consumer
product safety industry in the USA is regulated by the Consumer
Product Safety Commission, which stated in 1984 that "It is
important to keep in mind that neither the [Federal Hazardous
Substances Act] nor the Commission's regulations require any
firm to perform animal tests." Furthermore, the UK Government
has effectively 'banned' testing on animals for cosmetic products
and ingredients in the UK, and the European Union is moving
down similar lines - despite the best efforts of companies like
Procter & Gamble.
Therefore, I urge you to please end your promotion of this cruel
and callous company.

Air France is making big bucks off the misery of animals. They are by far one of the biggest importers of wild-caught primates. And you know where their destination is: Huntingdon Life Sciences and other labs in the business of torturing animals.
Without the endless supply of live "test subjects" HLS' business would not be possible. These animals that once roamed free in the jungles of their native habitat are kidnapped and sentenced to lives of pain and terrifying deaths.
Some of Air France's competitors have already decided to stop taking blood money. In the last week, Air Mauritius, British Airways and Air China have all announced that they will no longer import primates for vivisection.
So take a few minutes out of your day to say "bonjour" to Air France. Ask them nicely to sever their ties with the live import trade.
