Brownsville residents protest electricity rates
(10/19/05 - BROWNSVILLE, TX) - About 100 residents appeared before the Brownsville City Commission to protest increased electricity rates.
The city's Public Utilities Board raised its electric rates by five-and-a-half percent on October First. Each customer must pay an extra $2.77 per thousand kilowatt-hours in their base electric rate.
The board provides electricity as well as sewer and water services for Brownsville.
Mayor Eddie Trevino Junior attributed the increase to hurricane-related oil refinery shutdowns and the spiraling cost of fuel.

Homeowners In Belle Meade Section of Memphis Protest New Development
MEMPHIS- A battle is heating up today in the Belle Meade area in East Memphis. A developer wants to build what's called an infill-development on the north side of Poplar. An infill development is where several houses are built on land where only one or two houses stood before. Memphian Tom McCarty lives in Belle Meade and has put a sign in his yard opposing the plan. McCarty says he's afraid of sewage problems as well as increased traffic. In a letter to city planners, the developer says the in-fill would be both successful and consistent with other developments already going up in the area.

Two arrested in topless protest at Capitol
Associated Press
SACRAMENTO - Two women, members of a group called Breasts Not Bombs, were arrested Monday after they stripped off their tops at the state Capitol to protest measures backed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday's special election ballot. Other protesters were permitted to pare to their brassieres or to pasties without being arrested. Some men in the group also removed their shirts. "Once they bared all, they were arrested," said California Highway Patrol Officer Tammy DuTemple. The Mendocino-based group went to court last week to block the arrests, but U.S. District Judge Garland E. Burrell ruled Friday that "there is no First Amendment right to bare breasts on the grounds of the state Capitol." Members previously had demonstrated topless without incident in the San Francisco Bay area and at an anti-war rally in Washington, D.C. Arrested and taken to Sacramento County Jail were Sheryl Glaser, 45, and Renee Love, 40, both of Albion. Each was charged with indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and violating the conditions of the group's demonstration permit. State Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, said the Legislature should clarify what constitutes indecent exposure. "Exactly what is it that we are dealing with when we talk about the indecency of the breast?" she asked. "If a woman were holding a baby here today and breast-feeding, would she have been arrested?"

18 grandmothers arrested at Iraq war protest
October 17, 2005, 8:18 PM EDT
NEW YORK (AP) _ Eighteen grandmothers were arrested and face charges of disorderly conduct after they showed up at a military recruiting center and said they wanted to enlist, a protest group said. Police arrested the women, ranging in age from 49 to 90, Monday afternoon after they sat down in front of the Times Square recruiting station to protest the war in Iraq, police said. When the 18 women, including Marie Runyon, who is 90 and blind, tried to enter the station, they found it locked, said Joan Wile, 74, director of Grandmothers against the War. "We tried to ring the bell at the booth, but no one answered," Wile said. "I saw a head poke up from behind the counter every once in a while and then duck back down. I don't know what they were afraid of. Maybe they don't know how to deal with a bunch of grannies." The women were taken into custody after they sat down in front of the recruiting station and began to chant, "We insist, we want to enlist." Grandmothers against the War joined the New York City Raging Grannies and the Gray Panthers to form a coalition called the Anti-War Grandmothers, which organized the protest in Times Square. The group said that about 100 people attended. "The police were extremely nice," Wile said. "They helped us up from our sitting position and helped us get in and out of the van, which was difficult with our handcuffs on."

Five arrested at protest of detainee conditions
October 18, 2005, 2:59 PM EDT
NEW YORK -- Five young men wearing hoods and orange jumpsuits were arrested at Hunter College, New York, on Tuesday in a protest of conditions at the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay detention camps. Shouting "They're raping me! They're torturing me! Please do something! Don't just go to class," the five knelt on the floor with leashes around their necks, evoking photos of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib camp in Iraq, before being handcuffed and dragged away by campus police. The protest in a third-floor student commons area of the Manhattan campus was part of an effort to drum up support for a nationwide day of protest against the war in Iraq on Nov. 2. "If there isn't a movement that's resisting these outrages, this is not going to change," said Ati Lagos, an organizer of the protest, who said she was with an organization called The World Can't Wait. Louis Mader, director of the public safety for Hunter, part of the City University of New York system, said the demonstrators would be given desk appearance tickets and released. "This space is by permit only," he said. "These individuals had no permit." Some students who watched the guerrilla theater unfold were supportive while others were puzzled. "I think it's great that they're doing this," said freshman Eileen Woie. "People need to know." But sophomore Jason Balroop said, "It's a distraction. We all have class. I have to take a test right now."

Recruiting Office Shot Up
Apr 28, 2005 ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4)
An Army and Marines recruitment center in Westminster was shot at eight times early Friday, an incident that police believe is related to the airing of CBS 4 News' report on alleged recruitment improprieties.
"The timeliness is too significant to ignore," said Westminster police investigator Tim Read. "The report was at 10 p.m. (Thursday night) and by 7 this morning, the damage occurred.
No one was injured in the shooting, which shattered some glass at the front of the building at 7355 W. 88th Ave.
Debbie Cannon, with the Denver Army Recruiting Battalion, called the shooting an "isolated incident" and not the result of the broadcast. [One more stupid, silly, transparent lie. Why bother? Oh, sorry, forget. Lying is second nature for recruiters, and that's what Cannon is.]

Anti-Nuclear Demonstrations Held in New York
By Christine Hauser
May 1, 2005, The New York Times
NEW YORK - A coalition of groups opposed to nuclear weapons
marched in New York today, just before talks start at the
United Nations to review the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
Marching bands played, and demonstrators held placards and
flags pushing for nuclear disarmament and rallying against
war as they made their way toward Central Park.
The protest by United for Peace and Justice, an antiwar
group, and Abolition Now, which advocates the elimination of
nuclear weapons, have said they expected up to 60,000 people
to participate, including the mayors of the Japanese cities
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the United States dropped
atomic bombs in 1945 in the final days of World War II,
killing and wounding hundreds of thousands of people.
Marching along with the mayors from the two Japanese cities
were survivors of the bombings. The march started at midday
and made its way up First Avenue in Manhattan before heading
west.
"Shut down everything - testing, nuclear weapons, the war,"
said Vickie Downie, of Teseque, N.M., who came with a group
calling for the closing of the beleaguered Los Alamos
National Laboratory, the country's largest nuclear weapons
lab, according to The Associated Press.
A statement on the Web site of United for Peace and Justice
said, "We need to be out in the streets sending a loud and
clear message to decision-makers and the public at large: End
the war in Iraq!"
It said war veterans and military families also planned to
join the march and rally.
Bob Schumacher, a Vietnam War veteran from Montrose, Penn.,
said the public was being fed lies, as it was in the Vietnam
era, The A.P. said .
"I made a promise to people I knew who died there that I
wouldn't stand by and let another war happen and not speak
out," he said.
The protest is timed to coincide with the Nuclear
Nonproliferation Treaty conference that starts on Monday when
representatives of 189 countries gather at the United
Nations. The conference is meant to offer hope of closing
large loopholes in the treaty that the United States says
Iran and North Korea have exploited to pursue nuclear
weapons.
Iran threatened on Saturday to resume producing nuclear fuel,
and North Korea dismissed President Bush as a "philistine
whom we can never deal with."
Kirk Semple contributed reporting for this article.

Students Wear Gags In Protest Of New Rules
POSTED: 11:34 am EDT October 20, 2005
UPDATED: 2:30 pm EDT October 20, 2005
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- University of Rhode Island students are donning gags to protest changes to the school's disciplinary code. The changes allow university officials to discipline students accused of repeatedly breaking the law off-campus. The new rules also make it easier for residence hall directors to search dormitory rooms. URI's dean of students has said the rules let the university intervene when students could hurt themselves or others. The gagged students will appear at a Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon on the URI campus. A group called the URI Student Rights Coalition accuses the Faculty Senate of betraying the spirit of the university by ignoring students' concerns over the changes.

US Gays Launch Boycott of Jerusalem Gay Pride
Report, QUIT, 13 May 2005
SAN FRANCISCO -- A vote by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to support a Gay Pride celebration in Jerusalem, Israel, has sparked criticism from gay groups that oppose Israel's policies in the Palestinian territories. They have announced a boycott of the celebration, slated to take place in the contested city of Jerusalem on August 18-20, saying Israel's policies toward the Palestinians make a mockery of the theme of the event, "love without borders?".
"The Board of Supervisors took a closer look at Israeli democracy, what they would see it borders without limit," charged Kate Raphael-Bender of San Francisco-based QUIT, a lesbian/gay/bi/trans group that supports return of the territories occupied by Israel to Palestinian control. "No city in the world could have more borders than Jerusalem," she added. Raphael-Bender said those borders are constantly encroaching further and further into Palestinian territory, and are enforced by military checkpoints and cement walls. "Israel's borders are impenetrable to Palestinians, and keep many separated from their homes, jobs and families," she added. Raphael-Bender noted that gay Arabs are likely to hit a wall if they try to join the festivities in Jerusalem. Not only Palestinians but all Arabs are routinely denied entry into Israel.
QUIT urges gays and lesbians to observe ongoing international boycotts of travel to Israel and Israeli products through which the international community can exert pressure on Israel to withdraw its forces from Palestine. "For internationals to stay away from this event will send a very clear message to the Israeli government," Raphael-Bender said, noting that the situation was different for gays in Israel. Both QUIT's counterpart in Israel, Black Laundry, and the Palestinian lesbian group Aswat will participate in the event but plan to use it to draw attention to the injustices Palestinians are subject to under the brutal Israeli occupation.
Early supporters of the boycott include: American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, San Francisco Chapter (ADC-SF) Jews for a Free Palestine LAGAI -- Queer Insurrection Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA) Queers for Peace and Justice International Socialist Organization.
The boycott of World Pride in Jerusalem, kicked off by QUIT! and other LGBTI groups in the U.S. is gaining momentum, even as the SF Board of Stupervisors passed a resolution yesterday supporting it.
QUIT! has produced a 15-minute video to counter the one produced last summer by bluestar promoting World Pride. QUIT!'s "Love Without Borders?" piece presents the true image of Jerusalem, a city divided by a 25-foot concrete wall, which has caused death and destruction in Palestinian communities for the last two years. The full video is available from the QUIT! website.

San Diego racists confronted at the border
"Through the long night, as Chase and his thugs attempted to apprehend border-crossers, Gente Unida activists in four-wheel drive vehicles dogged them with floodlights and loud music. These tactics proved to be successful, disrupting the "covert" actions and demoralizing many volunteers, who trickled away one by one, through the night. Frustrated vigilantes threatened some activists with violence. On a videotape made by one group of counter-protesters, the bigots can be heard saying, "You come down here and you will be engaged in a firefight.""

Around 200 people packed Inala Community Hall last night for a fiery public meeting on
fighting racism and stopping black deaths in custody - jointly organised by Socialist
Alliance, Youth Affairs Network Queensland, Sisters Inside and key leaders in the Murri
community. The meeting drew significant media coverage (apparently it featured on
Stateline tonight).
Many in the crowd were there to see Murrandoo Yanner, the powerful young Aboriginal
leader from northern Queensland. Murrandoo didn't disappoint, giving a sizzling
denunciation of systemic racism, of the failures of governments - Labor and Liberal, of
the class nature of racism, and of the need to continue the resistance. Murrandoo was
like a local Malcolm X,capturing and inspiring the audience.
Socialist Alliance member and Murri leader Sam Watson gave a fantastic outline of the
long struggle against black deaths in custody, and Rev Alex Gator moved with her
personal story of police violence.
Discussion time saw plenty of people, mostly Murris, young and old, women and men,
plus some non-Indigenous anti-racist activists, all contribute to an understanding of the
problems, and the need for a people based movement to destroy police racism and
violence.
A huge list of names were collected on the night to be part of a rapid "response team"
to act when any incidence of police racism or violence occurs, and the meeting
determined to hold a public rally in around 2 weeks time.
