GUINEA-BISSAU: Police fire tear gas at marchers

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L17687281.htm

Police in Guinea-Bissau fired teargas on Tuesday to stop hundreds of supporters of an ousted former ruler, as the interim leader said the country risked sinking into political chaos. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the house of Kumba Yalla, who was ousted as leader in a bloodless coup in 2003 but says he is still the rightful head of state and declared himself president at the weekend.

5 Bulawayo Students Injured By Riot Police

Zimbabwe Standard (Harare)

July 17, 2005

Posted to the web July 18, 2005

Adrian Nel, Bulawayo

Five students were seriously injured on Monday when armed anti-riot police broke up a peaceful demonstration over late payment of grants and deteriorating conditions at the Bulawayo Polytechnic campus. More than 2 000 students took part in the demonstration. The injured students, three males and two females, were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals, where they were treated and later discharged. Bulawayo Polytechnic SRC secretary general, Briton Gudhlanga, said the students' union was surprised by the attack on the peaceful demonstration. Gudhlanga said they subsequently put the demonstration on ice to allow the authorities to address some of the issues raised by the students.

Traders protest after crackdown
May 18, 2005
By Philani Makhanya
Hundreds of informal traders yesterday pitted themselves against Metro Police in Durban during an angry protest against the city's latest campaign to clean up the pavements and eliminate over-trading in the central business district. About 300 informal traders protested outside the Durban City Hall after the Metro Police confiscated their goods and removed them from the streets. Scores of illegal traders have been removed from
Field, Smith and West streets this week as police have accelerated the enforcement of street trading bylaws. The protest against the city's enforcement of bylaws fuelled speculation that the illegal traders were attempting to undermine the work done to introduce 50 Metro Police auxiliary constables who would police the informal sector. Lindiwe Mahlangu, the head of the city's Business Support Unit, was adamant, however, that the city would introduce the constables, who were expected to begin work next month. They would clamp down on informal traders who disregarded bylaws by trading in areas not designated for informal trading.
