Russian Motorists Protest Potential Ban on Right-Hand Drive Cars
Created: 19.05.2005 13:22 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 13:23
MSK, 14 hours 4 minutes ago
MosNews
Thousands of Russian motorists who drive foreign-made cars with right-hand drive protested the government's plan to ban imports of the cars. The government has said, however, that it plans no such measures in the foreseeable future. Hundreds of motorists blocked traffic in central Moscow on Thursday, opposing the government's plans to ban the imports and operation of right-hand drive cars in Russia, the RIA-Novosti new agency reported. Motorists staged rallies near the federal government compound after Russian media reported the Ministry for Industry and Energy's controversial plan. About 50 cars arrived at the government building with orange ribbons tied to their antennas in protest. The protest caused a major traffic jam on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment, where the government sits. Protesters also urged the government not to increase
import duties for used foreign-made cars. Hundreds of foreign-made car owners gathered in the west of Moscow on Thursday, their cars, too, adorned with orange ribbons and balloons. Similar protests were held in other cities and towns across the
country.

Head of Beslan Teachers' Committee Arrested in Moscow for Supporting Khodorkovsky

Created: 18.05.2005 11:40 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 11:40 MSK

MosNews

A prominent Russian public figure, the head of the teachers committee of the town of Beslan, where terrorists took a whole school hostage in September last year, was detained by Moscow police on Tuesday for taking part in the protest rally against the trial of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Ekho Moskvy radio reports.

The radio station reported that Vissarion Aseyev, was detained on Tuesday, May 17 and taken to a local police station.

It was the second time in as many days that Mr. Aseyev had been detained - on May 16 he was detained near the court building for demonstrating in support of the former Yukos chief and later released.

The Gazeta.Ru internet site quoted another human rights activist as saying that Aseyev was beaten during detention.Tatiana Karpova, a co-chairwoman of the regional public organization Nord-Ost that helps Beslan siege victims, told the Web site that Aseyev, who was wounded in Beslan, had fallen victim not only to terrorism, but also to state terrorism.

Karpova said that Aseyev was in Moscow on the invitation of the Nord Ost organization to take part in the second "No to Terror " festival on May 14.

Yukos Court Protesters Report Police Brutality

Created: 17.05.2005 12:08 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 12:08 MSK

MosNews

A protest rally by Mikhail Khodorkovsky supporters near a Moscow court on Monday ended in clashes with law enforcers, with police detaining participants indiscriminately, opposition leader Sergei Mitrokhin told the press. He complained that the protesters had been beaten by police.

Deputy leader of the liberal Yabloko party, Sergei Mitrokhin said that about thirty minutes after the rally sanctioned by the city hall ended policemen began detaining people.

In comments for the Ekho Moskvy radio station Mitrokhin said that the rally had been officially sanctioned by the city authorities.

"Permission was valid until 14-00 [Moscow time]. At 14-00 we folded up all our banners and stopped shouting slogans. People started slowly to disperse. At that moment, they [police] began grabbing people and dragging them to a [police] van. They grabbed me too. I was dragged to the van, with my head banging against the van. Then they handcuffed me to the van and started kicking me. Then they beat up women while pushing them into the vans."

Mitrokhin said that afterwards he had all the injuries he had suffered confirmed by medical staff at a first aid center.

Ilya Yashin, head of Yabloko's youth wing, said that altogether the police detained about 20 people. They were charged with disobedience to police and participation in an unsanctioned rally.

On Tuesday, however, the charges against the Khodorkovsky supporters were dropped by a Moscow court, Gazeta.ru reported. Protest leaders Garry Kasparov and Sergei Mitrokhin said, citing the judge, that the case had fallen apart in court as the prosecutors failed to produce any evidence of guilt.

BELARUS: Belarus Riot Police Break up Peaceful Rally for Missing Journalist

Created: 08.07.2005 15:32 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 15:40 MSK

MosNews

Riot police have dispersed a peaceful rally held in the Belarus capital Minsk in memory of Russian journalist Dmitriy Zavadskiy who went missing in Belarus five years ago. Russia's First Channel television reported that special purpose OMON police troops had been used to break up the rally, which had not been sanctioned but was peaceful in nature. One of the policemen hit Zavadskiy's wife Svetlana in the face. The woman was admitted to hospital with head injuries on Thursday evening. Dmitry Zavadsky, a citizen of Belarus who worked as a cameraman for Russia's Channel One television, went missing in Belarus in July 2000. In 2002 Belarus authorities charged two police officers with Zavadsky's kidnapping and sentenced them to life in prison.
