FMLN DEPUTIES, ALLIES BEATEN, ARRESTED--take action!

Action Alert From the FMLN, El Salvador May 1, 2005
Americas Watch: Project of Peace No War Network URL:
http://www.PeaceNoWar.net

Repression of the FMLN and other progressive forces escalate in El
Salvador... Please call the Salvadoran Ambassador to the U.S.
Number below!

From: Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front

To the International Community and to all members of the Network of
Salvadoran citizens living abroad

On April 28 the PNC (National Civilian Police) of El Salvador arrested
Pedro Bachon Rodríguez, an Ecuadorian doctor who is an advisor to the
SIMETRISSS, the Doctor¹s Union of El Salvador.

Though Mr. Rodríguez is a legal resident of El Salvador and is married
to a Salvadoran woman the Salvadoran authorities arrested him with the
intention of deporting him back to his native Ecuador. This action is
a blatant contradiction of ARENA¹s own immigration policies. ARENA
[the right-wing, ruling party of El Salvador] recently gave political
asylum and legal residency to well-known Cuban terrorist Posada
Carriles. Carriles is a career narcoterrorist who spent time in a
Venezuelan jail for the 1973 bombing a Cuban airliner, killing all 73
on board. He escaped after 8 years in 1985 thanks to a bribe from
Jorge Mas Canosa, the now deceased head of the Cuban American National
Foundation (CANF). He has been tied to the importation of large
quantities of cocaine into the US in support of the Contras in
Nicaragua in the 80s and to a series of bombings in Cuba just recently.

Elected FMLN Deputies Zoila Quijada and Salvador Arias were beaten by
the PNC as they were attempting to protect a group of protestors that
were demanding Rodríguez¹s release. Members of the Human Rights
Ombudswoman¹s office were also beaten and then arrested.

It is important to note that these repressive actions took place the
day before Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is making her first
visit to El Salvador - and three days before the massive celebration
of May Day "International Workers Day."

We are calling on everyone to denounce these human rights violations
and demand the immediate release of Rodríguez and the others being
held in detention.

Take Action Against Torture and Repression in El Salvador! Call the
Salvadoran Ambassador Rene León in Washington, D.C. At: 202- 265-9671
Ext. 223/229,

Demand that the Salvadoran Government

* Stop the repression against the people of El Salvador.

* Stop arresting leaders of the Salvadoran social movement.

* Respect the constitutional right to mobilize.

* Respect the human rights of FMLN officials
