Traders continue protest
Our Correspondent / Mangalore November 07, 2005
The meeting of trade bodies of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh which was held here on Saturday under the auspices of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). It unanimously resolved to continue their non-compliance by not paying service tax till it is withdrawn. The meeting decided to form a confederation of southern states federation of commerce and industry based in New Delhi to liaise with the Union government on matters concerning members of the trade bodies. It also decided to intensify its non-compliance of payment of service tax by consigners/consignees. A Srinivas Rao, president of KCCI felt that the government was treating traders as second class citizens and making them a victim for the budget deficit. Vishwanath Kamath, chairman of the action committee urged the government to abolish service tax imposed on traders. The meeting was presided over by S Babu, president, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Labour Party Pakistan women leader beaten up by police
Nazli Javed, national finance secretary of LPP and a Lahore local body counselor was severely beaten up by police on 3rd May during the journalist demonstration at Mall Road Lahore.
She bravely fought with the police when the police started beaten charge. She snatched the stick of one police constable after he and some other attacked her. She started beating the police constables who started running away. Nazli did not run away even after the rain of lathi charge on her. Instead she kept the traditions of Okara peasant women who had several times fought with police using the wooden sticks. Several LPP comrades came to her help and fought with her against the police brutality.
Nazli photographed being beaten up was printed in several national dailies including Daily Express.
Now she has several blue spots on her body.
Building a resistance culture is one of the priorities of LPP in recent times. This was a fine example of that. Fighting with the section of working class and showing examples of bravery.
I was yesterday at Punjab Journalist Union office and every one was of full praise of Nazli.

SINDH
The Long March from Sukkur to Karachi
Sindh Confronts Musharraf With March of Thousands Against Kalabagh Dam
Special SAT Report
KARACHI, March 28: As General Pervez Musharraf continues his officially sponsored rallies to lobby for the Kalabagh Dam, thousands of Sindhis have been marching with their nationalist leaders from Sukkur to Karachi against the proposed Dam, with their rally ending with a huge demo before the Chief Minister House in Karachi today.
But while the entire spectrum of Sindhi activists has joined hands for the cause, their 685 kilometers Long March has been largely ignored or down-played by the mainstream Pakistani news media, ostensibly under Army pressure.
Leaders of the Awami Tehrik, including Rasul Buksh Paleejo have been making fiery speeches in the last two weeks during their march and participation in their rallies have seen from a few hundred men and women to thousands. The remarkable aspect, however, has been the focused attention paid by the Sindhi Press to not just the anti-Dam rhetoric but to the larger anti-Punjab sentiment in Sindh.
Among the mainstream political parties, former PM Nawaz Sharif has been the most prominent in extending support, surprisingly for the Sindhis, as top leadership of the PPP is relatively muted on the issue.
According to the Sindhi Press, when the Long March entered Thatta on March 24 the city observed a unique show of solidarity as thousands welcomed the marchers with slogans that gave General Musharraf the stark choice, between the Kalabagh Dam or Pakistan.
Chants of "Karballa, karballa, sindh lai karballa," "Pervez Musharaf ker Ailan, Dam khapey ya Pakistan," ringed the air. Thousands of political activists, lawyers and people from various walks of life staged a sit-in on the National Highway. Activists of the Awami Tehrik, Sindhiani Tehrik, People's Party Parliamentarians, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party and Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz and members of the District Bar Association participated in the sit-in which resulted in suspension of vehicular traffic for over two hours.
On the occasion, AT Chief Rasool Bux Paleejo, PPP leader Babu Ghulam Hussain, Sindhiani Tehrik president Zahida Shaikh, educationist Aapa Maryam Majidi and others delivered speeches and Sarvaich Sujawali and Wasand Thari recited national songs.
Paleejo has been relentless and vivid in his remarks. He told the rally countries cannot survive on the basis of religion and appealed to the conscience of the Pakistani and South Asian people to raise their voice against the oppressive rule of Punjab. He accused General Musharraf and his group of committing dacoity on waters of the River Indus and said supply of water to Sindh had been stopped to create hatred between Sindh and Punjab.
Paleejo has not been sparing the Sindhi feudal lords who are hand in glove with the Pakistan Army. "The General has hired the services of some feudals who had a track record of selling out for their petty interests," Paleejo thundered. However, he warned that the rulers must beware that 40 million people of Sindh would fight for their legitimate rights till the last drop of their blood.
The Sindhi leader accused Punjab of disregarding major water agreements, saying Chashma-Jhelum and Taunsa-Punjnad canals could not be opened without the consent of Sindh. He said undemocratic forces first took over the administration of the country by force and then initiated what he called the anti-Sindh Thal canal project. The vested interests are creating hatred and disharmony among the provinces and those leaders, who were betraying the people of the smaller provinces, would be taken to task.
On its 17th day men and women came out on the roads of Hyderabad to welcome the March participants. Workers of Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee, Sindh Water Committee Pakistan People's Party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Taraqi Pasand Party, Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Sindh Hari Committee, PPP (SB), JUI-F, Awami National Party, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Sindh National Party, Sindh National Council and student of Sindh University, Mehran University, Tando Jam Agricultural University and LMC joined hands.
More than 200 leading writers, intellectuals, water experts and journalists and several dozens lawyers were also marching with the protesters. Speakers, besides Mr Paleejo, included Ayaz Latif Palijo, Wishnoo Mal, Agah Shahabu Din, Dr. Dodo Maheri, Abrar Qazi, Zahida Shaikh, Mahboob Abro, Dilshad Bhutto, Parwano Bhatti, Nazeer Naz, Amanu laah Sial, Zafar Leghari, Tarik Khoso, Qadir Ranto, Husna Rahoojo, Jeejee Zareena Baloch, Taj Joyo, Dr. Khalil Qazi, Nazeer Memon and others.
Many of the fiery speakers warned that if any individual or party compromised on Kalabagh or any other dam, it will be declared a traitor to Sindh and its entry in rural areas would be banned by the Sindhi masses.
Paleejo received standing ovation when he said the people of the province were capable of resisting such moves if they were pushed any further. He accused General Musharraf of acting against national interests just to remain in power.
Awami Tehrik Central Leader Ayaz Latif Paleejo, an advocate, urged the leaders of all the parties to join in the efforts for the rights of Sindh. He warned western leaders that their endorsement of present rulers has encouraged them to destroy the fate of 40 million peace loving Sindhis.
Admiring the role of Fazil Rahoo, Nazeer Abbasi, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Soreh Badshah Pagara, Murtaza Bhutto, Lala Asad, Ayaz Samon and others, the speaker urged living leaders of Sindh including Pir Pagara, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Asif Ali Zardari and Mumtaz Bhutto not to compromise and not to lose hope in the masses. They were urged to join the peace loving common Sindhis on roads, villages and in towns.
Ayaz Paleejo condemned the brutal attitude towards Balochs and invited the Urdu speaking population to join hands with Sindhi masses against Kalabagh Dam. He asked Altaf Hussain and MQM to come forward and support the PONM's strike on 31st March.
The role of the media in ignoring the Sindhi protest was also condemned. Specially mentioned were CNN, BBC, Geo, Indus and ARY satellite channels.
The peaceful but resolute march by the Sindhi nationalists for almost a month proves the inherent strength of their conviction and their commitment not to allow the Pakistan Army to play with their rights, just as Balochistan is already in flames and a fundamentalist wave has taken political control of the NWFP.
Analysts say with all the smaller provinces up in arms against the Center, General Pervez Musharraf has only Punjab to depend on and that may not be enough for him to continue on this war path for long.
