On 4th of May 2005, a student protest was organized in Sulaymania in Iraqi Kurdistan against corruption in the city's administration and poor academic standards in the universities. In this demonstration, Rebwar Aref, a member of the central committee of Worker communist party of Iraq, gave a speech that was greeted enthusiastically by the protesters. Comrade Aref is a well-known political figure and a former political prisoner of the Ba'ath regime who had a death sentence hanging over him. He is now responsible for the Campaign to try Saddam Hussein and Director of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees. The comrade's militant speech, his political record and the warm response of the crowd clearly infuriated the PUK security forces. They moved to arrest him.

Rebwar Aref was detained on 5th May 2005 and taken to the PUK's main security office in Sulaymania. His fate is currently unknown. This is not the first time that the PUK has violated basic political liberties - PUK has even killed its opponents, not simply attempted to silence them with arrests and repression.

The life and safety of Rebwar Aref must be protected. We demand his immediate and unconditional release. Rebwar's only 'crime' was his solidarity with the students of Sulaymania University and his active support for their just demands for a better education and basic rights.

PUK has a shameful history of persecuting political activists and banning the activities of the groups that do not share its political perspectives for Kurdistan. In July 2000 they closed the offices of the Worker communist party of Iraq, banned its activities and killed five of its members.

General Strike Called To Resist Attack On Qaim (GI Special)

17 June, 2005 BBC

The US military has launched a major offensive involving some 1,000 troops.

The US operation in western Iraq began before dawn, with witnesses reporting fierce gun battles in the towns of Qaim and Karabila.

The leader of Qaim's Muslim Clerics Association called on businesses to remain closed in protest at the US attack, which, he says, is endangering civilian lives.

"The US forces are escalating the situation and we will declare a general strike after Friday prayers," Mudhafar al-Ani was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

Soldiers Arrested: Wanted To Burn Flag

July 4, 2005 Army Times

Some National Guard soldiers are donating blood in Rapid City, S.D., to make up for about 40 units reportedly destroyed by one of their comrades.

Serafin Delgado with the West Virginia National Guard, is accused of breaking into United Blood Services, causing thousands of dollars of damage, and destroying the blood units.

According to police, Delgado got into an argument with other members of his unit and said he wanted to burn an American flag. Reports indicate he found one at the Blood Services office but couldn't pull it off the pole, so he broke into the building.

Delgado is being held in the Pennington County Jail.

Afghans protest killing of Islamic cleric

16 Oct 2005 11:42:47 GMT

KHOST, Afghanistan, Oct 16 (Reuters) - About five thousand Afghans protested on Sunday against the assassination of a pro-government religious figure in a suspected Taliban bomb blast, urging the government to protect Islamic clerics from further attacks. Mullah Ahmad Khan was killed on Friday after a bomb planted in his mosque's pulpit went off just before prayers in Tanai district in eastern Khost province. Fifteen worshippers were wounded in the blast which officials said was part of the Taliban's campaign against supporters of President Hamid Karzai. No Taliban official could be reached since Friday for comment about the killing of Khan. Members of the radical group have in the past killed a number of influential clerics who had preached against the militants. The protests were led by Khost University students but also extended to several provincial districts, witnesses said. "We call on the government to protect the Ulemas (clerics) and arrest culprits for Khan's killing," said Sher Alam, one of the organisers.

MOROCCO: Moroccans protest at accusations of migrant abuse

Fri Oct 14, 2005 8:28 AM GMT

RABAT (Reuters) - Scores of Moroccan humans right activists protested on Thursday at reports of abuse by the authorities against migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who use the country as a springboard to Europe. Some 200 activists and passersby gathered near parliament in the Rabat. Some chanted: "We are all African" while holding lit candles. Others carried placards reading: "Morocco cannot become Europe's immigration policeman" and "No to racism". The protest coincided with the deportation by Morocco of hundreds of African migrants. They have been arrested after violent attempts to break into Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish enclaves surrounded by Moroccan land. International and local rights groups have said the Moroccan authorities have abandoned hundreds of migrants, including pregnant women and children, in the desert while other migrants complained of beatings and of being fed little. Moroccan officials say they are respecting human rights.

Moroccans protest al Qaeda's threat to kill hostages

06 Nov 2005 14:08:48 GMT

Source: Reuters

CASABLANCA, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Thousands marched through Morocco's biggest city on Sunday to protest al Qaeda's decision to kill two Moroccan hostages in Iraq. Holding banners and chanting "Muslims are brothers. A Muslim does not kill his brother" and "'Yes' to freedom, 'No' to terrorism and barbarity", the protesters marched through Casablanca, a city of 6 million and Morocco's financial capital. Al Qaeda has said it decided to kill the Moroccan embassy employees, Abderrahim Boualem and Abdelkrim al Mouhafidi because of Morocco's support for the U.S.-backed Iraqi government. Top Moroccan officials, ministers, pro-government and opposition party leaders and trade unions and rights groups, led the protest to put pressures on al Qaeda to free the two men. Some members of Islamist parties which back Iraqi insurgents fighting U.S.-led forces in Iraq also joined the march. "All Moroccans are with Iraq, all Moroccans are innocent," the marchers chanted. Morocco's influential organisation of Islamic scholars, known as the High Council of the Ulema and the Councils of Ulema in the Moroccan Kingdom, dismissed al Qaeda's argument that its verdict to kill the two embassy employees was "God's judgment". "The two Moroccans would be considered martyrs if this iniquitous verdict were to be carried out as they were carrying out a duty assigned to them by their nation and legitimate state," the Moroccan Islamic body said on Saturday. Organisers and local government officials said more than 150,000 people took part in the peaceful march while reporters said the anti-Qaeda protesters numbered more than 10,000.

UZBEKISTAN: Mass uprising against tyrant Karimov ends in bloodshed

Protesters in Andijan and other border towns in the Ferghana Valley revolted over mistreatment of locals

Their first action was to storm a prison to free locals stitched up on charges of being Islamists

Armed rebels then fought government troops for several days

The eventual victory for Karimov's forces was followed by massacres of thousands, with many more fleeing across the border
