WESTERN SAHARA: New intifada breaks out - students and others protest
Defiance and confrontations abound as security forces attack demonstrators and jail some for long terms

Protests begin after a crackdown on a small protest over a transfer of a prisoner to Morocco

This sparked larger protests in El Aaiun which later spread to other cities, including the Saharawi community within Morocco

Thousands in Manipur protest Armed Forces Act

Sunday August 21 2005 00:00 IST

IANS

IMPHAL: Hundreds of protestors shouting anti-government slogans Saturday took to the streets in Manipur demanding withdrawal of legislation that gives the army unlimited powers to deal with militancy, police said. A police official said some 2,000 to 2,500 people holding placards marched through the main thoroughfares in the capital to demand withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) that provides unlimited powers to the security forces to shoot or arrest anybody without a warrant. The protest march was organised by the Manipur chapter of the London-based human rights organisation, Amnesty International. "People are being killed and raped with impunity by security forces taking advantage of the AFSPA," said T. Singh, a civil rights campaigner, who took part in the procession. Army and paramilitary soldiers followed the protestors in mounted vehicles to prevent them from creating any trouble. "The protest march passed off peacefully without any trouble," said police official Dhiren Singh. An Amnesty activist said the organisation would be lobbying worldwide to pressurise India into repealing the controversial law. "The legislation is nothing but draconian, and unless repealed, scores of people in Manipur will continue to be shot dead by the security forces without any rhyme or reason. This is nothing but a scar on democracy," the activist said on condition of anonymity. "We shall intensify our protest and if New Delhi does not accept our demand than the state would go up in flames." In July last year, Manipur was in turmoil when a 32-year-old woman detained under the troops' special powers died in military custody - allegedly after being raped. The security forces said she was a rebel. The state was virtually under siege for about two months with protestors holding rallies and demonstrations demanding the withdrawal of the legislation. One protester died after setting himself on fire and a group of young women drew nationwide attention to the cause by demonstrating naked outside a military camp. There are more than 19 rebel outfits active in Manipur, bordering Myanmar, with demands ranging from secession to autonomy. More than 10,000 people have died in the insurgency in Manipur during the past two decades.

Human Barrels block annexations wall

At 6-00 AM this morning Israeli forces securing the building of the
annexation wall in the west bank village of Bil'in found five human
barrels blocking the construction route.

Four Israelis and one Swede barricaded themselves inside metal
barrels placed on the route of the annexation wall that is to annex
50% of Bil'in farm land.

Palestinians Israelis and internationals were demonstrating around
the barrels.

The military announced the area a closed military zone and arrested
five Israelis and one international using metal cutters' to pry the
peace activists out of the barrels.

Before his arrest Johan Persson from Sweden explained why he was in
a barrel on the route of the annexation wall " It is the
responsibility of the international community to enforce
international law. Since our governments and the UN are allowing
Israel to continue committing war crimes with impunity it has become
the responsibility of citizens like myself to do what we can to stop
them"

10 Israelis Arrested and Beaten at Bil'in Anti-Wall Demonstration
May 6, 2005

Bil'in, Ramallah, West Bank
10 Israeli non-violent peace activists were gassed, arrested, and
severely beaten with batons by Israeli soldiers today at an Anti-
Wall demonstration in the village of Bil'in west of the West Bank
city of Ramallah. Several Palestinian demonstrators were wounded by
rubber coated metal bullets. 3 were treated for tear gas
inhalation. Arrestee Rabbi Arik Asherman of Rabbis for Human Rights
was seen being beaten to the ground after being handcuffed.

Today's demonstrators, including 150 - 200 Palestinians from Bil'in,
70 Israelis from the groups Rabbis for Human Rights, Anarchists
Against the Wall, and Gush Shalom, and the International Solidarity
Movement, left the village and headed for the path of the Wall being cut
through Bil'in's olive fields. They carried signs reading "Stop the Wall",
"No to the Wall" in Arabic, Hebrew, and English.

No construction was occurring today on the site, but Israeli
soldiers stood guard. As marchers approached the path of the Wall
they were told it was a closed military zone and that the
demonstration was illegal. As they continued peacefully walking
forward they were met immediately by tear gas being fired on them.
Soldiers then attacked demonstrators beating the Israelis with
wooden batons and arresting them.

The soldiers continued beating demonstrators even after being handcuffed.
Sound grenades and rubber coated steel bullets were also fired at the crowd.
Several Palestinians received minor wounds in the head, legs, and stomach.
One person was hit in the head with a tear gas canister. Several demonstrators
were also treated for gas inhalation.

The 10 arrestees are being held by the police at Givat Ze'ev
settlement near Jerusalem and are reported to be currently being
released.

Today's demonstration, organized by village residents against the
construction of the annexation Wall through their olive groves, is
the most recent action in a very active popular campaign against the
Wall. Two days ago, Palestinians joined by International and Israeli
activists chained themselves to olive trees. 11 were arrested and released.

The Nakba day of 15th May 1948 was commemorated in the village
of Bil'in in another protest against the apartheid fence - the
present link in the chain of the Zionist occupation.
At 05:00 in the morning, members of the local committee of village,
Anarchists against the fence, and international activists arrived
at Bil'in's work site along the route of the separation fence.
The activists fortified themselves inside iron barrels, chained
themselves to each other and refused to go away. Their aim was to
prevent the bulldozers from continuing in the building the apartheid
fence which confiscate more than half of the lands of the village.

At 06:00 in the morning, 10 jeeps of the army, border police, and
police arrived. At 07:00 6 israeli activists were detained, amongst
them a photographer who was not even taken part in the action.
Their excuse was it is a closed military area. At 07:30 - the time
the report was written, there were still army forces there, and
people worry the village will be victim of a violent suppression
of the village.

Electronic media of Israeli main daily:
Breaking News from http://www.ynetnews.com/

Anti-fence protesters detained
Israelis and Palestinians belonging to an anarchist group
clashed with IDF soldiers Sunday morning in a bid disrupt
construction work on the West Bank security fence.

During the clashes, which took place in the village of
Bil'in, forces detained six protesters, the IDF said.

Six International peace activists arrested in the West Bank Village
of Bil'in for chaining themselves to imperiled olive trees along
side Palestinian and Israeli activists, were set free today.

On 4 May, residents of the village of Bil'in near Ramallah organized a non-violent protest against the annexation Wall where they were joined by Israelis and Internationals in chaining themselves to the olive trees while others demonstrated.

Bil'in farmers had received notice the previous day that eighty five
olive trees would be uprooted to make way for the illegal Wall and
called for International and Israeli support. After a stand off
that lasted four hours, the Israeli military using excessive force
cut the chains and dragged away twelve of the non-violent
protesters, arresting 6 Internationals and 5 Israelis. All the
Palestinians who were initially detained were all released. All 5
arrested Israelis were released after agreeing not to return to
Bil'in for 15 days.

The deportation hearing scheduled for the six International
Activists this morning never took place.

Instead, after holding them for over 26 hours, the police made an offer reportedly from the Israeli Ministry of the Interior that they be released under the condition that they would not enter a closed military zone. To which all agreed save one who was also released.

When asked why he participated in the protest by chaining himself to an olive tree, released activist Gabe Gao from the United States, who is of Jewish descent, said: "The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel's Separation Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is illegal and must be dismantled. The confiscation of Palestinian land and destruction of Palestinian property has nothing to do with 'security'. It is the responsibility of the international community to pressure Israel to adhere to international law. Since my government is not taking action, I feel it is my moral obligation to act in opposition to this crime."

The activists report being beaten and treated with excessive force
during their arrest by Israeli Boarder Police and the Israeli
Defense Force citing video and photographic evidence (available upon
request). Greek activist, Maria, requested medical attention for a blow to the head and injuries to her legs and arms sustained during the arrest. Instead She was brought to an interrogation room and repeatedly insulted with racial slurs. She received medical treatment only after 12 hours and repeated requests. Initially she was informed by Israeli ambulance drivers that the fee for thorough treatment would be 350 NIS, but eventually she was treated without charge. The Greek consulate is intervening in order to obtain her medical records which the Israeli police have refused to release.

Eleven arrested in attempt to non-violently stop olive trees being
uprooted by Israeli Military in Bil'in

Eighty five olive trees are currently being uprooted by the Israeli
Military in the West Bank village of Bil'in to make room for the
illegal annexation wall.

As part of a Palestinian Non Violent resistance campaign against The
Wall sixteen people including nine Palestinians chained themselves
into the olive trees this morning in Bil'in while fifty others
demonstrated.

After a stand off that lasted four hours the Israeli military cut
the chains and dragged away twelve of the non-violent protesters.

Yesterday the residents of Bil'in received notice from the Israeli
Army about the uprooting and demolition of the ancient olive trees
and rallied International and Israeli supporters to demonstrate
alongside them today.

The Military police used excessive force during the arrests. One of
the arrestees, a woman from Greece, suffered a blow to the head
while being beaten by Israeli soldiers. An Israeli protestor was
kneed in the groin and a Norwegian protestor had his legs forcibly
spread to a 180 degree angle.

Of the eleven arrested there were two Americans, two Swedish, one
Norwegian one Greek and five Israelis. (All the Palestinians who
were initially detained were all released.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
01/05/05
Two protesters hospitalized with wounds sustained at anti-Wall demo
in Bil'in today

[Ramallah, West Bank] 12-year old Ahmed has a metal fragment lodged in
his skull. A Norwegian protester who was standing next to Ahmed was
also hit by a ricocheting fragment of what he says were live rounds
fired in their direction by Israeli soldiers two hundred meters away.
23-year old Hamze is suffering from an injury to the back of his head
from a gas canister that was shot at him directly from short range.

The demonstration that began as a calm and peaceful protest was met
with rubber coated metal bullets, tear gas and sound bombs fired
indiscriminately into the crowd. The Israeli military did not produce
a closed military area warrant and so had no legal grounds to disperse
the demonstration. The confrontation then escalated to stone throwing
from some of the Palestinian youth, and Israeli soldiers began
shooting live rounds in the direction of the protesters.

In a demonstration held last Thursday, undercover Israeli provocateurs
threw stones at Israeli soldiers and border police. Special forces
used a gas powered gun, not previously used in the West Bank, capable
of firing rapid rounds of plastic bullets filled with a white powder
(which is currently being analyzed) that caused intense pain to the
people shot.

Two Palestinians, Riad Bornat and Ilyan Abu Rahma, who were assaulted
and dragged away by the provocateurs, are still being held in Israeli
custody.

Today's May Day demonstration was attended by workers and farmers from
Bil'in, accompanied by Israeli and international activists to protest
the theft of their livelihood.

Before the current Intifada mmany Bil'in residents worked in Israel.
Today with unemployment soaring at over 60% the village depends on its
agricultural land to survive.

More than half of Bil'in's land, 2,300 dunams, will be lost beyond the
Wall and has been earmarked for settlement expansion.

3 April, 2005
Israeli suffering brain hemorrhage due to injury during Anti-Wall
Protest

Israeli activist, Jonathan Pollack, was hit in the head by a tear gas
canister shot from an M-16 when Israeli soldiers fired at an anti-Wall
demonstration in the Ramallah region village of Bil'in.
He was hospitalized in Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv, received
internal and external stitches and diagnosed to be suffering from a
hemorrhage in the brain. His medical situation is currently stable and
he is conscience.

One hundred protesters gathered in front of the Israeli Ministry of
Defense this evening protesting the tactics the Israeli military uses
in its attempts to silence dissent against the Wall.

The village of Bil'in has continued it's resistance to the Wall, which
will effectively confiscate fifty percent of their agricultural land,
despite nightly raids, harassment and arrest campaigns by the Israeli
 military conducted against the village.
ISM (The International Solidarity Movement) is currently maintaining a
presence in Bil'in to document and report human rights abuses.

Despite Israeli claims that the Wall is intended to safeguard the
security of its citizens the route of the Wall near Bil'in has been
specifically designed to incorporate the current construction of the
settlement of Menora in addition to the existing settlement of Kiryat
Sefer.

Israelis Protest Travel Restrictions Against PA Motorists

12:22 Oct 23, '05 / 20 Tishrei 5766

(IsraelNN.com) Members of left-wing Israel's Peace Now organization protested on Sunday morning against the travel restrictions prohibiting Palestinian Authority (PA) residents from traveling on Israeli roads in Judea and Samaria. The protest took place in southern Jerusalem at the entrance to the Minharot Tunnel Highway. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has reinstated travel restrictions following two shooting attacks, one fatal, occurring an hour apart from one another. The perpetrators in both cases made an easy getaway by traveling on the Route 60 towards a nearby PA autonomous area.
