Zambia police arrest 51 university students at riot
18 May 2005 17:37:58 GMT
Source: Reuters (full report) LUSAKA, May 18 (Reuters) - Zambian police arrested 51 university students on Wednesday after they began stoning cars during protests which began three days ago, police said. "The situation is very tense at Unza (the University of Zambia) and we have called in police reinforcements. The students have blocked the main road (to Lusaka airport) and they are burning car tyres," police spokeswoman Brenda Muntemba said. Students say the protests are over a government refusal to increase their funding. Muntemba said the students had started stoning vehicles and he had not ruled out witness reports that motorists were also being targeted. Police had arrested 51 students and charged them with riotous conduct, she said. A student leader told Reuters the protests were sparked by a government refusal of a request to raise their research allowances to $170 from $85. "Our project allowances have remained static for almost 10 years. We want the government to listen to us and increase these allowances," a student leader said on condition of anonymity.
