Hey folks,
I am going to the radical history conference in windsor on the 5th of
february and will be talking about some of the more radical health history
in toronto and connecting things like queer oppression, bath house raids, to
the founding of hassle free clinic....maybe talk about the doctors hospital
occupation, street health, HPAP and the special diet, and then for sure
street medics to health for all, and the scarborough free clinic.
I am going as a member of No One Is Illegal so primarily the focus will be
on health for uninsured populations- but i am going to try to discuss how
throughout history various populations have been seen and thought of as more
or less illegal with varying amounts of protection/service... and how people
have organized to learn, and create meaningful service models for themselves
in the face of this state/societal-created notion of illegaility/precarity.
I also want to discuss the tensions of organizing in service provision- when
does organizing service provision begin to be more of a service to the
government, and less to the community...the risk of amazing grassroots
organizations being co-opted and turned into Agencies that lock out
workers..
I m hoping to get some input from people- suggestions about topics, if
people have papers they think are interesting, histories, personal stories
etc.,I would like to incorportate these. I was hoping to have an informal
dinner/meeting at my place next week and invite people to come to discuss
it....
Please let me know if you can come:
Tuesday January 25th
7 PM
528 Brunswick Avenue
Soup, Bread, Cheese, Wine
big love
sarah
