KBIC Tribe and many others want to stop "Acid Mine" near Lake Superior

Public hearings ended this week on a proposed sulfide mine near Lake Superior in northern Michigan.

The Turtle Island Project, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, environmental groups and thousands of residents are opposed to the Kennecott Minerals Corp. mine in Marquette County, Michigan.

Many people call it the "Acid Mine" because the process of removing nickel from the earth causes sulfuric acid.

The KBIC tribe strongly opposes the "acid mine" on the Yellow Dog Plains because sulfide mining tramples ceded territorial rights and the treaties of 1842 and 1856.

A famous theologian will be discussing the mine and other environment issues as they relate to the Bible when he visits northern Michigan in early October

While much opposition has been vocal - there has only been silence from some prominent people who claim they love Michigan's Upper Peninsula - Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, a democrat; and famous actor Jeff Daniels, whose wife hails from the same area the mine is planned and who makes pro-business TV ads for the state.

A coalition of local businessmen back the project because of Michigan's faltering economy, however the mine will create less than 100 jobs and close within seven years.

When those business leaders are not promoting the “Acid Mine” - they are bragging about two national awards in recent years declaring the area an All-America County and one of America's Most Liveable Communities.

One environment blog is calling for the county to be stripped of those titles if the mine is built.

The written public comment period ends October 17, 2007 after which the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is expected to approve the mine's permit without regard for the public comment.

If the MDEQ approves the mine it will be the worse kind of irony because their job is to protect the state's environment.

All admit the mine will be using new and unproven technology.
