When I read **Steven Weinberg's** assertion that those supporting a boycott of Israel suffer from a "moral blindness" that could only be explained by anti-Semitism, I wondered how he squared that claim to the moral high ground with a comment he once made to me that smacked of anti-Palestinian bigotry...[H]e said to me, with what I took to be a condescending smirk, "Don't romanticize Palestinians just because they are _primitive_"...I had a hard time believing that a Nobel Prize winner would...say something so ugly.

There are a number of ways to curtail press freedom. You can charge a journalist with murder and put him on death row-Mumia Abu-Jamal, for instance. You can grant special favors, privileges, and access to corporate media giants while raiding and shutting down low-power, independent radio stations, which the FCC does with some regularity. You could arrest independent journalists at anti-war demonstrations- again, a regular occurrence. For instance, I recall my friend and Indy journalist, Jeff Imig, who has been repeatedly threatened with arrest, while recording anti-war demonstrations in Tucson, Arizona, for violating the statute against filming federal buildings. Jeff finally got arrested-for jaywalking! Corporate press, on the other hand, seems to have free reign to jaywalk and film federal buildings at these same events-behavior I and countless others have witnessed!

?Paid Buskers? is an oxymoron, in ways. Buskers, or street performers, are defined by the fact that they have a hat out for tips in the public square. Unlike gigs where the performer is paid by a private entity to perform in a private venue, busking is about reclaiming public space and using it for free enterprise and free speech. A current program sponsored by the Seattle Parks and Recreation Dept. is paying buskers to play in Seattle parks this summer, and it has raised some controversy here and there, especially regarding the idea of ?paid busking.? But buskers are paid in tips regularly, and it is not unusual for large festivals to hire buskers for their events to add ambiance.
